Friends and relatives usually set up fundraisers so he probably wouldn't have had anything to do with that.. I think people do that sometimes as a way to show support... besides he wasn't filthy rich.. and the medical bills were quite expensive I heard.. though I admit I am not privy to his actual financial status... he might have needed the leg up.

...what the weather situation is in the Redfield, NY area... any snow up that way? .

I think you are misunderstanding why some choose to take big bucks instead of small ones...It isn't because we think you shouldn't be able to take what you want... promoting passing up small bucks is a movement that some have adopted towards bettering the age structure of the buck population on their land or in their area... it's kinda involved... but there is a science behind age structure that has a benefit to the deer herd.. in fact as more people pass on smaller bucks and take does instead... the buck to doe ratio balances.. it will have no effect on how many young deer are available for those of you that will always want to shoot them... there will actually be more young deer... and if the state decided to impliment AR's in areas.. there would still be plenty of young doe meat to be harvested by those that need to feed their families.. currently any place in NY that has no doe hunting would not be considered for AR's due to the low deer density so small bucks would still be fair game there for meat.. there are plent of doe tags issued in most WMU's for those that need meat that badly.. and like I always say.. if I were in such a bad way that I needed deer meat for my family to survive... hunting laws, rules and regulations would mean nothing to me... and certainly others opinions about killing big or small bucks would mean even less... so I don't understand why people that want to shoot young deer for meat think that the movement towards shooting older bucks is an issue for them at all... I can respect that you want to take whatever legal deer your want, thats your right.. but you should also repect others choices to do otherwise... unfortunately for some the movement towards passing on young bucks is growing and has been for about 10-15 years.. with no sign of stopping... deer hunting as we've known it is evolving and time will tell whether its good or bad for hunting. I guess it will depend on which side of the fence you're on.

I agree.. nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors in a marraige and its not up to anyone but the couple to solve whatever problem there might be.. it will serve no purpose to the friendship or the marraige for you to interfere... if things are such that he is looking elswhere.. then I think he has a reason.. that reason .. no matter how much you don't agree with it.. is spurred by something within the relationship that is none of your business.. otherwise he would have told you.. do yourself a favor and leave it alone.

yeah that looks like it could be the same buck... I still haven't heard of a legal kill though of a buck that caliber in ithaca area.

Way to go KIm.. I'll be waiting for you and your sons stories..

Like you geno I see no sense in chasing a wounded deer around the woods if it's not necessary... I think with experience comes patience... I also feel that not having as much time as others to hunt is no excuse to start taking so-so shots in hopes that a deer runs into your arrow... but i also know that there will always be hunters that will push the envelope so as not to go without a deer... many only to wound a deer and not recover it and still winding up deerless. Killing a deer is not the same as harvesting a deer... you can kill a deer and never recover it... that is not harvesting. Too many hunters believe that killing and harvesting are always the same thing.

Nice Buck Archer

You can't eat the rack, but you can eat the ton of meat that carries the rack... I hunt because I enjoy it.. don't think thats the wrong reason.. I just happen to enjoy big bucks too..

Yeah I liked keeping score in little league too... never got the concept of everyones a winner... that just isn't true. never understood the statement "It's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game." I always thought it should be "How you play the game determines whether you win or lose!"

gotta love the trad bow.. nice
-
kinda.. Dave... I don't like some of the shots he takes... sometimes he just fires arrows hoping something will run into one..lol .. that definitely isn't my style... If it were I might have killed a few more good bucks just by accident
-
not getting that one steve.??
-
I haven't heard of the buck yet...and I usually hear in a couple days.. if this is last weeks buck he has kept it very quiet... and thats nearly impossible.

So those of us who are into stupid antler scores can't have a thread where we discuss them? Why bother posting on a thread that you have no interest in?...I don't get that... and buck scores are measured to a fraction of an inch thats why we use those numbers... but I agree there are probably those that remember there scores more than their relatives b-days..lol

I don't know about that... I've been hunting for 37 years and have found the opposite to be true..the people that bitch the most are the ones that never shot a big deer... without getting into hurting anyones feelings I won't mention any names, but go back and look at the posts bitching and moaning about not seeing deer or people poaching their property, or how many tags they didn't get or bitching about guys that care about antlers... they aren't guys like Sam Potter, G-man, Dave 6x6, who kill lots of big bucks yet you never hear complaining. I would say there are more guys bitching about us guys that just happen to like hunting bigger bucks.. Just like some of the fellas here that are into deer load calibers, bullet speeds, bow speeds, and other number related things.. some of us just are into rack scores... everyone has their own thing...but for some reason antlers seem to piss a lot of guys off... yet I haven't seen one post on here where someone has gotten a big buck and said "Damn, I wish these antlers weren't so big on this buck. I was hoping to kill something smaller. "

Like I said I can be interested in protein and have big antlers at the same time... my friends and I sit around eating venison while we talk about the nice buck we've taken...I don't bad mouth guys that want to hunt whatever they want.. you and others like you have a hard-on about guys who like hunting big bucks.. I enjoy everything about hunting that every other hunter does I just don't get a thrill out of killing younger bucks and there are those that don't seem to like that.. it's not about who's right or wrong... as far as you not liking the government forcing anything on you..they have been making the rules since you began hunting... they tell you how many tags you can have , how many and what deer you can shoot, when you have to report it, what weapon and when you can use that weapon, what times of the year you can hunt... you want to shoot what you want.. when you want.. but the truth is you can't because they make the rules like it or not... other hunters having opinions isn't forcing anything on you.. it's only a guy having an opinion just like you have.
-
Seems counter productive because you don't understand how it works... never understood how someone could have an opinion on something that they know nothing about...lol.. and I'm pretty sure big bucks have meat too.. so I guess some of us have the best of both worlds, big antlers and meat.

It's called adrenaline..lol

Tragic also because it's basic gun safety 101 and could have been avoided...sad

I think those guys are what 308 was referring to... I have to say i can understand in a way... I think most of you are hot over him badmouthing bowhunters... some of you have even said similar stuff here referring to gun hunters... He made an observation and pointed it out... yeah he went overboard... but he wasn;t far off base with his general observation about the number of lost animals... we are all good at trusting that just because fellas post here about how much they practice and how ethical they are... that they actually are what they say they are... my experience tells me that with all the practice that a lot of hunters do with their bows or guns...they still don't seem to make the right choices when it comes to actually firing those weapons... I know fellas that are crack shots at the range that still shoot at running deer in the brush, take shots just outside their comfort zones, and are a bit too anxious about killing a deer at all costs... so although you might not like how 308 said it.. you all know that some of what he says is true...

well that was fun while it lasted!!

He didn't seriously think you guys were somebody important did he???
