  1. food plots, baiting, whatever blows your skirt up I guess... haha. I have no need for any of it.. hunting big bucks in the adirondacks isn't about sitting around in a comfy treestand waiting for a little 4 pointer to come to your hybrid clover patch. But, as long as you're having fun.. have at it!
  2. Estimating inside spread is not hard at all... if you use the deer's ears as a guide. tip to tip a buck's ears are about 16" apart. As far as antler restrictions go there will always be the problem of estimating antler size for the hunters that have itchy trigger fingers... if you take the time to really look you can tell a shooter from a non-shooter. If you have any doubt.. you just let the buck walk.. simple!
  3. I have no idea where you have been getting your info Larry.. but if we're going to have a debate you have to be at least somewhat educated on what your talking about...Let me go back to that beginning and save us a lot of time.. I have no opinion on AR. Because any standard the DEC plans on using is far less than what I am already doing and have been doing for nearly 20 years. So its a none-issue with me. Its only an issue with others because hunters ( and I use the term hunters loosely)only care about themselves and whats good for them.. not the deer heard. Its ridiculus that a 50 year old man thats been hunting since 16 should get all worked up because he feels the need to shoot a spike horn.
  4. He may not be the only whitetail God.. and its not his opinion. its the data collected since before 1990 when the whole concept of QDM reached NY. Grant Woods took an old concept that started back in Texas in the 50's and applied it first here in NY at Weller MT Hunting Club in the mid 90's. The program lasted 5 years with strict QDM regulations on doe take (which the DEC allowed no doe harvesting in that area at the time so they were issued special permits just for the program), antler spread restriction, etc. after 3 years the body weight of all the harvested animals increased drastically... the number of spike bucks sighted dropped from several to "0". the number of big bucks harvested increase each year to the 5th year. The buck to doe ratio started out over 20:1 and was down to 5:1 by the 5th year. And Although the program was a huge success as far as QDM goes, the membership decided they would still wanted to kill smaller bucks so they did away with the program. Today the weller mountain club is back where they started. Go figure!!!
  5. thank you Steve.. i assure you I am just a regular guy like you...but still looking for a good deer story if you'd like to submit one..
  6. Cut some dead trees!! reduce the canopy a bit so something will grow for the animals to eat!! Just a thought
  7. Some one stated that AR does nothing for the benefit of the heard.. thats not entirely true.. it is part of the whoe management equation...but without the rest of the factors it really does nothing on its own but produce a little better age class representation for the buck. lowering population (usually doe) to meet the habitat is usually the first step in controlling overall deer health
  8. Larry. I'd be willing to bet that QDM would be responsible for lower numbers of whitetails.. thats kind of the idea... by definition the original premiss for QDM was to establish the healthiest deer heard given the particular habitat. Which in most cases means reducing population and establishing good age representation among bucks for more natural breeding. The habitat can only sustain a certain amount of whitetail and unfortunately that isn't always a number that some guys like as far as being able to see deer.
  9. A 200 lb buck in NY is a hard feat to accomplish in NY... i've taken 9 bucks that score over 100 including a 155 , 12-point and none of them weighed 200 dressed. But I have a few buddies that have taken a couple.
  10. Thats true.. but if you go with percentages its a better field judge.... if the deer has a lot of head gear I usually don't have to check the width.. I killed a 10-pointer once that scored in the 130's and only had a 14 inch spread.. but when i saw his rack it was a no brainer to shoot or not.. unfortunately there is no perfect science in all thia.. just better science than the DEC is using at the moment.
  11. AR is a good idea, just not the AR that NY imposes... 3 point on one side.. is usually still a 1.5 yr old buck. The only true in the field why to gauge age would be antler width.. it is much more reliable (although much harder for hunter) I use the outside the ears for my personal AR. Makes me look hard at a buck before deciding to kill him...and if its borderline outside the ears and I'm not sure.. I pass. simple!
  12. You sound like a real fun guy Steve.... Relax Buddy.. I'm just looking for hunting stories... you don't have to buy anything..
  13. OOPs sorry Larry .. you are correct about 1/2 th genes coming from the doe.. that is why its important to keep the buck does ratios in check...so that there aren't so many does to be bred ... which causes late breeding (2nd and 3rd estrus periods for does that don't get bred the first time) which creates late born fawns. and so on and so forth
  14. Not true Larry... for one.. when the AR is first implemented .. the number of bucks taken will drop drastically for a few years until the younger bucks have gotten older and there is a good representation of ages among the bucks. Usually takes 3-5 years. In the first year you my find more younger bucks doing the breeding but as the program goes on more bigger bucks will be present , creating more competition forcing the smaller bucks out of the breeding pool and leaving the bigger stronger bucks to do the breeding. Its kind of like killing dumb horny 17 year old boys... evenually you will have no experienced savvy adult males to carry on the family name just new 17 yr old teenagers each year. If we just killed the wise experienced harder to kill 50-60 older fathers some of them would survive... and there would be 60, 50, and more 40, 30 , 20 and 17 year olds. instead of just a few adults and all preteens. Dr Grant Woods
  15. Wow you guys are sadly misinformed.. the only reason that 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 are breeding is because the ratio is so out of whack that there are not enough older bucks for competition. I find it funny how people spout off so called facts but don't have any idea what they're talking about. You fellas need to look up Dr. Grant Woods.. leading whitetail deer and wildlife biologist in the country. Then you can have an intelligent conversation about Antler Restriction. I'm Ok with hunters saying they don't like AR.. thats their choice and opinion ... but I hate when they try to defend their position with nonsense facts.. do your homework fellas.
  16. My reply to the the question what about guys that don't get but a couple days to hunt each year? is: How can you be doing any practicing with your bow or firearm if you can't even get the time to hunt? And, just because there are hunters that can't hunt as much as others doesn't mean we need to stop thinking about what is best for the deer and hunting in general. If you aren't a kid any more you should be ashamed of yourself for not giving back a little to the sport by doing your homework about what produces the healthiest deer heard in a given habitat. ,
  17. It's true that the DEC can't change anything with just AR. Whether you like it or not , imposing your own AR is the best thing for the buck population in your area as is the harvesting of does. What hunters want to do and what should be done are two different things. The reason the buck to doe ratio in NY is so out of whack is because there are hunters that make excuses for why they can't instead of doing what they should. Between bowhunting, muzzleloading, and the regulars season... a hunter can take a doe or a buck with bow, doe or buck with muzzleloader, and a buck with regular season tag (even if you don't draw a doe tag). So, that being said... what is the reason for killing a small buck? The only reason is because you want to... which is ok by me. But in the same breath you can't say "I never see any big bucks" when you take your spike horn at 7am on opening morning. That doesn't leave you much chance of seeing a big buck that year.
  18. Oh and by the way, I work extremely hard to get all the stories about the top bucks taken across the state. The cool part is they are written by the hunters themselves just like they would tell you at deer camp. Although I actively pursue the larger record book bucks, I will publish submissions about any whitetail hunt in NY. Some times those are the better stories!
  19. AR is a great idea... but doesn't work unless the surrounding areas are restrcted as well. I never much cared what the State was doing as far as AR. I have had my own AR since 1994. Its really not about regulating AR its more about educating hunters as to why its a good thing for whitetails in general. Ar is only one part of a good management program... and helps make sure there is a good age representation in the buck population. But, ratio od bucks to does is just as important, with 1:1 being optimum, 3:1 accepable, and in some places 20:1 is reality. Educate yourself on whitetail biology versus habitat availability and you'll understand much better.
  20. There are but a handful of hunting sites that aren't commercial.. I am NYS Big Buck Club measurer and and avid Adirondack and Central NY hunter who loves to hear a good deer story like everyone else. I use to publish a magazine in the 1990's called Antler Magazine. The site is an off shoot of the magazine which I loved doing. Many of the over 10,000 subscribers have been after me for years to do it again... so I'm doing a website instead. Its much easier and costs less. I made exactly $1.26 last month from the website. So, no one is getting rich here. As for a sponsorship.. we'll have to see won't we?
