Even with 10' snow in tug hill... (where I have a camp by the way). If the deer can get fattened up enough early on they can survive the worst winter... its when they are competing for food and there isn't enough browse is when the problem occurs.. usually caused by more deer than available food.

Haha Brushbuster.. you have not a clue about what you're taking about... I can tell by your responses that you have know Idea what I'm talking about either. As for PA.. I have hunted PA for many years .. what you call thriving herds is actually called over population. Until recently I have never seen a decent buck in PA. Just messed up scrub bucks. You can go on believing what you like, but you are dead wrong... Period.. Thats not my opinion,,, THAT is fact!

Cleaning the deer up and sticking the tongue in just plain makes for a nicer picture. After a good hunt I usually look like I got pulled through a knothole backwards.. so one of us in the picture should look presentable.

Yeah they are smart because they are older.. you don't see many big bucks during the day because you shot the potential big bucks years ago and continue to shoot the bucks before they get a chance to be big. A big argument for shooting small bucks is "If I let him walk the neighbor will just shoot him anyway, then the neighbors says the same thing about his neighbor so everone keeps killing small buvks because they think thats what their neighbor will do. How about instead you stop shooting small bucks and tell your neighbor, then maybe the neighbor will stop shooting small bucks because he knows his neighbor will let them walk too. Just a thought.

That my friends is a BIG BUCK! The beams reach way beyond his nose.. they might be 28" long... I think the rack is bigger than it looks in the pic because of the body size. He might be close to 170.. Hmm I just happen to hunt Long lake and surrounding areas..

No AR because man isn't interfering as much and reducing habitat... plus hunting pressure is small compared to other places in the state meaning less 1 1/2 year olds and bucks get a chance to get much older. If the rest of the state was a vast as the Adirondack Park there would be no need for AR, but that is not the case.

passing on 1 1/2 year olds automatically increases the number of bucks present for the next few years which narrows the buck to doe ratio especially if the right number of doe are being taken from the herd. This allows more does to get bred during their first estrus meaning buck fawns are born earlier which will produce slightly bigger racks in the younger bucks.

Uhoh. here is the type of hunter that got us into this mess in the first place. Hate to tell you that when you shoot a buck you may be killing more than just one of next years bucks. Especially if you kill him on opening day at 7 am like you probably do.

Doc.. believe me .. I have been involved with the deer management movement since 1994 and the people that are involved are WAY involved. They do tons of research and keeps accurate records. Although New York is in the infant stage when it comes to management... other states have been doing research for decades. In genereal we know the model works... usually not showing marked results for a few years after initiating the program as the age classes start to develope in the buck population. I do agree that watching how many does you take from the herd is very important and over harvesting definitley can defeat the purpose. The guys who are truly educated in this know their stuff... but like anything else its an ongoing process with adjustments that need to be made depending on habitat availabilty and current populations. It is a good thing to have concerns about certain aspects because it keeps us thinking so that decisions are made to help better a management plan.
