You can't know that his genetics are bad... the same type of antler deformity occurs from an injury to the opposite side of his body... or even an injury to the pedicle of that antler... neither will produce offspring with the same antler configuration.I'm not killing him cuz his tail sticks up!

exactly how I feel... must be some primal instinct that we just have no control over.. funny how for some reason there are some that just aren't as afflicted as others.. it doesn't really make a lot of sense at all...lol I must say that my obsession has waned a bit since I've gotten older though.

My response wasn't hostile at all.. it was my opinion on culling.. I didn't imply that he wanted to shoot small bucks.. I was stating that culling .. especially here in NY is usually code for I need a reason to shoot a small buck but still be able to say that I don't shoot small bucks... culling has nothing at all to do with good hunting practices or deer management.. maybe trophy management... but not deer management... simply allowing for better age stucture among bucks will weed out most bad antler genetics as bigger more dominant bucks gain control of most of the breeding... there is no way to know a deers antler potential until he reaches that potential... a deformed or stunted rack may have nothing to do with genetics and more to do with an injury or insufficient nutrition.

How come there is a pic of you and not your uncle with the buck.. when I post a pic of a deer I didn't kill it would be a pic with the hunter that got the deer... do you have a pic of him with the buck in the field? So, was the pressure off you with the first buck or your uncle... I can see someone started punching "tags".. but only a tag on the second buck. By the looks of the backgrounds of the pics... it looks like your properties look almost exactly alike. Same clover in the field and everything.

One hell of a 6 pointer - what do you think?
nyantler replied to moose's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
I'll say!! I have a thing for BIG 6's that would score near 100... and that one is a beauty! I'd take him in a heartbeat! -
I have no idea where the concept of culling bucks because of antler size has anything to do with deer management. The fact that you have bucks with smaller or bigger racks has nothing to do with culling or not culling deer.. because you are NOT a scientist or biologist you should be spending more time concerning yourself with the basics like food sources, doe harvest, and yearling buck protection before thinking about taking particular bucks out of the gene pool. What culling really is in my opinion... is an excuse for hunters, that claim they pass on younger bucks, to justify killing a young buck by calling it a mature, genetically inferior buck... when in fact it is just a young buck with a common youngster rack that the hunter can't resist pulling the trigger on.

Called in a small 6-point from 200 yards away tonight... he came in running... stopped like someone yanked his tail when he hit some scent I had laid out in front of me.. what's up with that?... he got all nervous and woudn't come in close enough for a good picture... found a huge rub on a big cedar tree with tine marks scraping the tree just behind it.. thats a big boy!

Thought it would be a good idea to jot down some of my 2012 adventures... Rained today so I had misgivings about even going into the woods with the recurve, but the urge got the best of me so I donned my rainsuit and headed off behind th house. I came upon a scrape line right behind the house last weekend so I thought I'd try to get a look at the buck that made them... as I popped into the woods at about 8:15 a.m. just off my back lawn I spotted a deer moving through the woods about 40 yards away..it was a spike buck with about a 12 inch spread and good curls on the spikes.. he passed within 10 yards.. I drew on him just so just to know that I could.. and let him continue on his way.. spent the next few hours still hunting.. snuck up on two does I saw moving through the golden rod.. but could only get a front on shot at about 20 yards before they finally realized I was standing in front of them... I have been seeing lots of deer and lots of bucks but nothing yet that has got me excited... should be a good weekend though... lots of movement.

Me too Culver... I understand things can happen, but the cover-up is undeniable and despicable. -
its an older deer... the fact that it's a doe is probably the reason it got that old

Yeah Dave.. That would be nice of Miz to save us all the mystery.. I have to be honest though.. I think I'd take a stab at that buck with my recurve... pass during gun though.
