I drive woods roads slowly, and glass. If I see some area worth checking out, I mark the gps for a future scouting trip. If I see animals, I cruise up 1/4 mile, dump the truck & stalk back to the area off the road.. Maybe he was checking you out as well. Who knows what his reasons for driving slowly..

I know of one mountain that a group sets up tent camp Friday morning, off on a side peak, and hunts the top opening day morning. The 'Orange' wave sends deer right to them..

Get a squirrel call. It's an annoying sound that drives them, and my dog nuts. Wear full camo like for turkey, sit still against a tree base quietly, and let the woods come to life. Then call. You can also 'bark' a squirel if it is on a substantial tree trunk by shooting the tree under the squirrels chin. The impact will kill the squirrel without actually shooting the animal. http://www.gunvaluesboard.com/barking-squirrel-339.html Borax can be used to preserve the tails/hides cheaply yourself if you want..

I see guys posting on craigslist all the time looking for land to hunt deer, why not try putting up ads for land for coyote hunting in Orange/Putnam counties??

Cold morning rabbit Hunt on LI
NYDeer replied to bellmorekennels's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
My dog isn't a hunter, but I've already told the wife the next one will be. Not sure on the breed or what we'll hunt, but I think its it's really cool having the dogs work the game for the hunt.. Thanks for posting. -
Get the free 3 yr access permit from DEC to hunt tidal wetlands, and their "Hunting on State Tidal Wetlands" brochure. You can walk in & get it from the Stony Brook Office anytime its open. Most have some areas that you can hunt from land.

Finally made it out this morning. The Timber Point wetlands entrance is snowed in, so I parked on an adjacent block & walked it. I figured, to keep the peace, I toted the shotgun in a case strapped to my pack so the sector car wasn't called.. I found quite a few spots, had birds most of the morning, but a bit high for my 4 shot. All the empties I found were BB size. Should I step up the shot size to #2's or larger to get these longer birds? Also, seems like there were hunters on the west side of the Timber Point Marina. Is there any land to hunt over there or is it just a boat hunter spot?

The red foxes looking stunning running across the snow..

It wasn't one of the 'top shelf' models, so most didn't go in to the store actually looking for them. Works great for me too!

DOING A CONTROVERSAL ESSAY FOR ENGLISH CLASS

The morphing of this into a 'Ted Nugent' topic does Jordan a dis-service. Yes, Nuge does do alot for the sport, and I am grateful he chooses to put himself out there to be a target of the loons. As an individual, yes he has make his share of mistakes, and as a public figure, his mistakes are well documented by media & detractors.. Keep this in mind a moment.. Most of us on here are older than Jordan, and had people we looked up to in our youthful years as well.. How would they stand up to today's media microscope? Furthermore, would it be better that Jordan idolize 50 Cent- drug dealer, Al Capone- gangster, or Bernie Madoff- pozni Master?? Gimme a break! There are PLENTY of choices that could have been far worse in my book.. Jordan, good luck on the paper. Hopefully the teacher will put the standards of a what makes a good paper ahead of personal opinions... -
No apology needed.. Your young, full of entusiasm, and ideals, and allowed to make errors in word choices and 'who' is your hero.. With age, hopefully, you'll come appreiciate the person as a whole before taking such a stand on a public figure.. Don't worry if you don't though, you'll have plenty of company, 69 million Americans voted for Obama.. Keep coming back, although we can be a rowdy bunch on certain topics, you'll learn some good stuff on here..

I'd say play the lottery, you have better odds.. I've never seen a racoon during the day light. Maybe with a dog you might have some luck..

Gas Drilling on State Forest land?????
NYDeer replied to sits in trees's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
This is no surprise to me.. DEC is the agency in charge of licensing, inspection & enforcement for gas drilling, and sees the cash that's being generated, all while its own budget is being sucked away.. -

Just saw this post, and what a hot potato! Although I support enhanced outdoor activities for the handicapped. I won't be contacting, the bill leaves the door too wide open for fraud. It doesn't help I've personally witnessed a teenager run from a store, hop over the side & into a new convertible mustang parked in the first handicapped spot. He topped it off by pulling the mirror tag & squealed tires while taking off like a rocket.. I wish I was as handicapped as him! -
Its hard enough to get ONE entity to be responsive to outdoor enthusiasts concerns, never mind 2.. I do agree we will always have SOME type of seasons, the addiciton to the cash generated from liscense & hunting purchases is way too strong for Albany to stop..

Just saw this thread, more resource articles on how PROPER gun control works.. 25 years murder-free in 'Gun Town USA' Crime rate plummeted after law required firearms for residents http://www.wnd.com/?pageId=41196 -
If your interested in gunsmithing, I'd say stay in school, and go for mechanical engineering.. I've done some smithing on my guns, and would say its a great hobby, and can be a great career.. With mechanical engineering, you'll also be able to build anything or work just about anywhere else besides working on guns. Hit your library, read up on gunsmithing. It's not a one trick pony, but a variety job that has many areas of specialty.. Metal working & refinishing, parts R&R, wood/stock craftsmanship, accurizing/blueprinting, and then all of these areas could be specialized as well to specific models, or procedures.. Check out http://www.brownells.com I know other places tout 'they have everything for guns, ect..' but these guys are the real deal.. Order a catalog, and you'll get a peek in to the world of gunsmithing.. Good luck

Buying used, just go over the limbs, sting & cables very carefully. If something needs replacement, it'll wind up more than new. You could also try the shops to look for new-old-stock on hand too..

Approximately how much does it cost to get a Whitetail shoulder mount?
NYDeer replied to longislandhunter's topic in Region 1
Thats a good price, considering I paid $400 11 years ago.. I wish prices for everything else increased the same amount! -
Thanks for posting! Now I dont feel so bad when I got stuck.. Swerved to avoid a deer, went off road, and wound up sitting on a bed of ice, with the tires hangin.. If Unc's truck is a newer model, check the recyclers. Swapping a whole rear axel is a relatively easy thing to do..

The' entertainment' fundraising books have had '10 off 50', and '15 off 75' in the past.. Where do you check your points?

Whats your fav food while in the woods?
NYDeer replied to WhiteTailBuckDeer's topic in General Chit Chat
It'd have to be the "Candy bag".. A ziplock with mini snickers, kitkats, salted nuts, ect, and some chocolaty granola bars.. I usually don't eat candy so its a treat to me while hunting..
