Anyone hunt the state forests in southern 4 O- Steam Mill, Arctic China, Melondy? Trying to scope out areas for a future purchase, but wont be able to swing any significant acreage, so will be counting on state land to hunt.. It's a 4 hour run for me, which is about my limit. How's the hunting pressure, other than opening weekend?? Thanks!

Tree stand hunting: your safety device can kill you

No offense taken.. -
Anyone try the BM-360 Buckmasters Target from Walmart?? Don't bother.. I was blowing thru my old Burly bag target, & had my arrows refletched. So I figured I'd better get a targetr to keep the new vanes nice. I saw it was only $37, So I gave it a shot.. Big Mistake. I've pulled arrows out of saplings easier, and my shoulder & back were killing me after a little shooting time.. It's going back, gonna get a Block..

Shooting Bags (to rest rifle on at the range)

I have a a Caldwell set of pags.. Nothing special, was a gift.. And on one front bag, I tore a hole with a sling swivel, so I wouldn't recommend them.. -
That makes sense.. He has an older gun. That tip must have picked at something & got the round loose/askew..
-
THAT is a slammer..

Fletch tite usually.. If your shooting a biscuit, throw a small dab on the leading point, where the vane foot attaches to the shaft. This will create a small glue 'ramp' and keep your vanes nicer/longer. I also usually shoot a 5 bull target, one arrow to each to minimize vane/nock damage.

I've had the HSS since it first came out & pretty sure I bought it afterwards with the belt. Won't swear to it though.. Maybe it's included now as a standard thing.. -
I've been shooting factory 140gr Remington Core Lokts in the sweede, & saving brass to eventually do some reloads.. Have 6 boxes of 265 gr flat nose reloads from the old man, for the .444. Not sure the reload data off hand, but it shoots sub 1 1/2 groups so I'm happy.. Those using Hornady Leverevolution, ever have any problems with them loading/cycling in the chamber? I was thinking of picking up a box for the .444, and mentioned it to a friend. He tried them & jammed his 35 Rem so bad, he couldn't clear it, & had to take it in to a smith to free the action.. Glad I wasn't along on that trip!

Son can't make the hunt this year, so it was just a friend & myself. I called him today to see if he needed anything last minute from Dick's or WW, and found out his daughter went in hospital last night, so he won't be making the trip.. Family first, then everything else, to me, so I understood.. I'm cleaning guns tonight, the gear is readied. Gonna pack my Gortex gear just in case we get some snow. Gone solo many times before, but no 'tent' this year, & possibly electric!! so I'm really looking forward to this hunt.. ;D ;D Only a few days left, everyone else all ready?

Take it easy, but seems like a LONG recovery period.. Maybe you can get in some late season, or do a preserve shoot to get some hunt time in this year..
-
I just reread you only have a shotgun. Practicing shooting with a centerfire rifle will eat up your $$$ pretty quickly. I know you want to deer hunt, but I'd suggest a .22 to work with a bit, then go for a 'real' rifle..

God bless that woman.. Hopefully she'll stay 'under the radar' & be able to continue doing her good deeds..

:) Reminds me of Indiana Jones with the Arab swinging the huge sword.. "Yeah, Thats nice, Take that!" show over.. -
Nice find! Keep an eye for the other, it may be around somewhere close.. The deer should be a good one this year.

Not bouncing off the forrest floor is great, but a bigger fear I've had, since I usually hunt alone, is once in dangling, what next?? Hunter Saftey System has a suspension relief strap, which I had to purchase extra. It 's just a nylon web I can attact to both sides of the belt & allow me to 'stand up' off the leg straps. I keep it in the left chest pocket, along with a storm whistle, and a small pocket knife. I also keep a linesman harness in the vest as well in case I need to do the 'tree shimmy' down.. All these things should be included in the 'system'. They're selling 'safety' but using the harness as shipped is hazardous, so how safe is that?? -
Got the wife the Nook last year, loves it.. B&N gives away free ebooks all the time, plus if you search online you can find many more.. Mostly older stuff though..

Looking For Land; Southern Tier Only
NYDeer replied to bg1063's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
Call, or bettter yet, stop by the Property Tax Assesor's office in the county your interested in and ask about for any delinquent properties, or ones going up for auction. You may get lucky, tax liens superceed any other lien/note. Guy I used to work with picked up neighboring 40 acres when he went to get a the map of his landin columbia cty. Noticed the adjacent parcell had notiaions & asked about it. Went to auction prior year, someone won the auction, but only put down the deposit & never paid in full.. He submitted a $12k bid & now owns it.. -
Yep, I'd shoot him.. How old was that deer?
-
Looking good! Catskills lows gonna be around 30's for the weekend, hopefully they'll be moving..

Welcome aboard! Bring extra socks to change into if your feet get cold, a thermos of something hot, and find out from your hunting party how long you should stay in stand before hand.. Good Luck on the hunt.
