  1. Really?! Mine (HSS vest) came with the suspension relief strap included. It does seem surprising that they would have it as an extra "Sold Separately" type of item.
  2. Only in the .450 Marlin. Gun hasn't blown up yet; the first couple years I got a lot of ribbing about how my "Nerf" bullets were just going to bounce off the deer. ;D Factory ammo I use Federals in everything but the .450, I use Hornady in that. So far all I've been using in handloads are Hornady bullets. I'm looking to try loading some .30 caliber pointy bullets for my .30-30. I have a Savage 99 with the rotary magazine so I won't have to worry about the 'splosion problem.
  3. All this talk about Hawkens I'm going to have to watch Jeremiah Johnson again when I get home. ;D
  4. NEF Huntsman .50 caliber.
  5. Not sure. I've always used it and I haven't noticed any negative effects. But I don't use water to clean my ML either and it sounded like that is where most of the complaints were aimed; the Bore Butter locked any remaining moisture in against the metal causing pits.
  6. This passage per the BATFE covers why/which muzzleloaders are not considered firearms and answers the felon question, at least at the Federal level. http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/collectors.html
  7. Not really sure how they decided that myself, but you can order them through the mail without an FFL which you can't do with a "firearm".
  8. Used to shoot it every year before season opened (pretty much like everyone else) just to make sure everything was working properly, but I haven't shot a single slug since they opened up the rest of Oneida County to rifle. My original barrel on my Mossberg 500 was bent so I put a new factory rifled barrel on it that's ported. It did seem to help keep it from jumping as much but it is awful loud. Don't really like the 12 gauge w/slugs or turkey loads because of the recoil, but the funny thing is that I can shoot my .450 Marlin all day and it doesn't bother me. Not off the bench though; I can only stand 8 or 10 like that.
  9. When I read it I didn't see where he mentioned using his father's DMP tag. It sounded like he was going to have him get an archery license so he could use one archery antlerless tag and still hunt with the other."I was thinking about making my dad take his Bow certification so I could draw on a fat doe before the last couple days of bow to use my tag and still hunt legally. As long as its tagged it looks pretty legal to me."
  10. I have a friend that was moving from Madison County to Oneida County and he checked with Dan Sullivan at the Oneida County Pistol Licensing Office because he had the same question. He was told that: 1) You must change your address with the County that holds the file. 2) It is not required to move the file to the new county. 3) If you do not move the file, amendments must be done @ the original county office. 4) If you do move the file you will have to pay a fee and you may have restrictions placed on your permit @ the discretion of the licensing officer/judge. *But as always, Internet legal advice is no substitute for getting it directly from the proper authorities.*
  11. There are and have been a bunch of Model 99s in our camp. It's a shame they quit making them. Mine's a .30-30 takedown made in Utica. The .303 is a rimmed cartridge. http://www.savage99.com/ammo.htm
  12. Quality Cartridge http://www.qual-cart.com/ loads .303 Savage with the correct headstamp. I bought a couple boxes for my brother and it seems to shoot well. I don't know if you ever go to the gunshow at the fairgrounds in Syracuse but there is a guy there (usually in one of the side rooms) who sells all the reloaded ammo; I asked him one time and he told me he made brass and loaded them from .30-30 brass. He said he only did it for himself if I remember correctly, because they had the wrong headstamp and he didn't want someone to try to use them in, or reload them for, a .30-30 and have an accident.
  13. I prefer evening/afternoons because it's easier for me to stay awake, and I tend to get cold. For some reason I can usually sit longer before getting cold in the afternoon.
  14. Never used a climber but I have a hang on and a ladder stand that are about 15' up. The only stand I've shot a deer from though is only about 7-8'; I can just about touch the platform standing on my tiptoes.
  15. Thank you for explaining that. The way I understood as I read it was the antlers had to be wider than the ears. Just looking for clarification. As far as the other comment goes I wasn't too worried about it. It's not that hard to get hot and type something you normally wouldn't say to someone in person so I try not to take it to heart. I've been guilty of it myself.
  16. I really don't know how wide it is, I never cared enough to measure it. I know it's a mature buck, I'm just going by "The use of selective harvest criteria "width outside the ears"" from the proposal. I didn't try to make any point, nonsensical or otherwise, I just asked a couple questions about what I read in the proposal. Also it states on pg 19 "This should lead to more ethical deer hunting, and reduced button buck harvest as well.". I didn't say it wouldn't, I merely asked how it would?
  17. I just finished reading the proposal and I have a couple questions. 1) It mentioned that the "width" restriction would protect the button bucks but doesn't explain how. I don't understand how forcing people to harvest more antlerless deer will result in fewer button bucks being killed. Please elaborate. 2) My 9pt I posted in the "Taxidermy" thread was 5 years old and dressed 175 lbs. (I learned how to age deer by the teeth in my Wildlife Management class in college and it was also checked by a man who worked at a NYSDEC check station and he agreed on the age.) His rack doesn't exceed the width of his ears. How much longer would he have lived in the wild if this system were in place and I wasn't allowed to take him? How much bigger would he have gotten? If his rack never grew wide enough would the waste of a prime animal be justified to satisfy a randomly assigned rack size requirement? I know that second one actually had three questions built in, but please, just humor me. They are all serious questions, I'm not trying to stone you, I would honestly like to hear your explanations

    Bleat cans

Well there you go. I should've just asked that a long time ago. I've always just let it run through the whole length of the bleat. I did have a doe wander around my stand for nearly 10 minutes once a couple years ago and she was making those short blats about every other step. Must not have been any bucks within hearing because no one ever came to visit.

    Bleat cans

Thanks, I'll look for it. That would be typical for me to end up with something that I think is saying "Come here big fella, mee love you long time" when it's really saying "RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY, THERE'S A DUMMY WITH A POINTY STICK OVER HERE!!" ;D
  20. We've got one of those little canisters that came with the vacuum packer but I've never used it. Guess I may have to this year if I get one.
  21. I used a recipe that was (off the top of my head) similar that I got from Nugent's cookbook. Tasted great but don't sit too close to an open flame afterwards. :-X
  22. I've got two coyote traps out and that settles it. If I get one I'm going to keep him alive and train him to go around and pee in front of all of my stands!
  23. Sort of reminds me of when we'd get a cow with an abcess on her leg. Yicky.
  24. I've got him every year for those 4 years so unless there are more than one with that same messed up horn... ;D And as I stated earlier I only brought this one up regarding aging them on the hoof not ARs. I also acknowleged that he could very well have other things going on to make him atypical. My problem is not necessarily with ARs. I used to believe they were good, and in some areas they probably could be. But just as someone who hunts in an area with more hunting pressure and fewer bucks doesn't want me saying that people can come there and shoot any size/age buck they want, I don't want them telling me what I can shoot in my area when neither of us is familiar with the other's area. What I don't like is someone who doesn't know me from Adam calling me a slob, a poor sportsman and unsafe because the deer I shoot doesn't live up to their standards. Well PPPPBBBBBBHHHHHTTTTTTTT to them. Just because we have different opinions is no reason to get into name calling. You should have enough confidence in the strength of your position to not need to resort to that.
