Last year I bought 6 Beman arrows from Dicks and a block target. I shot them the next day and after a few sets I pulled the arrow out of the target and noticed the tip and insert stayed in the target. Pulled the next arrow out and same thing. I figured that he had forgotten to glue them or just did a bad job. Went back and they tried to stick me with shitty inserts and after arguing with the guy, he said I could take the inserts out another Beman box and yes, the guy didn't glue the inserts in the first time. Idiots.

went out today for a few hours to look for some oyster mushrooms. I didn't find any but I found a bunch of Reishi mushrooms that I will go back for in a week or so. I plan to make a tincture out of them. I also found a few other mushrooms that I would like help identifying. The first one I crossed after the Reishi look really cool and I remember seeing a youtube video about it not too long ago. I wasn't sure enough to pick them so I marked it on my gps and did some research when I got home. Turns out they are crown tipped coral mushrooms and apparently they are very tasty so I will go back in a few days and pick the dozen or so that I found. The second type looked like a portabello a little bit but it has white gills and the ends don't curve over like portabellos do. I saw at least 2 dozen of these in a few different areas and most were already past prime eating. The few that I photographed were the best of the bunch I came across. The last ones seem to be fairly common to, mostly on old dead trees. First pic are Reishi Second is Crown Tipped Coral and the last 4 pics are unknown

so what's out there now? I think oyster mushrooms are growing now and chanterelles should be in a month or two? If anyone has tips or advise for hunting/ storing/ preparing certain kinds of mushrooms, post it here! I think I'll message the mods and ask them if they can switch the title of this to the mushroom hunting thread.

So, morel season was kind of a let down but I still got some and have a jar of dried morels so it's all good. I'm getting excited to find different kind of mushrooms. I've been reishi Reishi growing in a few spots and I've read about the many great health benefits of it so I will pick some and make a tincture with it and see what all the hype is about these. They sure do look cool. Anyone hunt other mushrooms?

Yes it can be done if you shoot any deer that you have a shot at, assuming that you have a good spot to hunt, are a good shot etc. But, you could be out in the woods for 100 hours in the freezing cold for days on end and not even have a shot on a deer or even see one. Saying there's a lot to know about hunting is an understatement and it's something outsiders don't realize. Good luck.

Got a Covert MP6 coming in the mail to me in a few days. After dealing with POS truth cam 35's for the past few years, I'm excited to try it out.

So last night when I got home from work, I heard a fawn crying across the street from my house (woods.) I continued to hear it on and off up until I went to sleep at 10:30pm. I just hoped that it's mom would come and find it again. So today, I get home from work and I hear it again coming from the same spot. At around 7 I decided to take a walk with my camera to see what the deal is. I walked only about 50 yards into the woods, through a maze of prickers and the crying was very loud and had an echo to it. Well, this little fella fell down about 3 feet into the bottom of an old shed or shack. It was about a 4'x4' foundation with an oil tank in it. I scared it when I walked up to it and it stopped crying and just watched me. I ran back to the house and told my mother to come check it out as I got it out. We were back 5 minutes later and I got into the hole with it and it was curled up with it's head on it's back. I tried to calm it but as soon as I tried to pick it up, it bleated and rammed itself into the wall. I scooped it up, posed for a quick photo, and tucked it 20 yards away under a big pricker bush in hopes that the mother will come back and get her tonight. I still hear it crying about 30 minutes ago but at that same time, I saw a doe cross the street in a hurry and head that way and haven't head a peep since so I hope all is well.

Definitely addictive. I've never found them under apple trees although I heard that you can. My best spot is next to a dead elm and a dead ash. The other spots I've found have been next to living ash trees.

I noticed it too but wasn't sure if I just overcooked them or not. I only ate about 10 this season and I dried the other few dozen in my dehydrator. I think the mushrooms were just a bit dry. Still good, but last years I couldn't get enough of them.

Cool, last time I looked was last week and I found 8 nice ones. Found a lot that were already decaying and eaten up. I'll take a peak again tomorrow. Besides morels, I've found a few reishi mushrooms, 1 puffball and I just saw today some small chicken of the woods starting to grow. Excited.

not worth the risk of breaking expensive arrows. Targets aren't that much money. I got a good one I've been using for a year for $30.

really sad. Really tough situation. -
I'd support it.

never seen one or got on on cam. A guy I know trapped one a few years back in 3G.

I'm in Dutchess 3G. They were a few weeks late here

Got 6 more today (these plus a really light colored one). I saw some others but they were black on the tops so I left them.

Found some morels the other day. My #1 spot had some but not nearly as many as last year plus I made the mistake of letting a coworker see me sneaking to the spot so he picked some too. I found another spot near a swamp and right under the biggest ash tree I could find. It's right near where I found these leeks too. There was a bunch of really small morels so I hope many more will be sprouting up any day. I made a potato leek soup with the leek bulbs and a saute with the leaves. I dried the morels in my dehydrator for future use. Now I must find some more. This is addicting!

I don't think upstate NY has many ticks because of the colder weather.

already got bit 4 times. Crazy this year. Just sprayed my clothes down good with some repellant before I go out in the woods again.
-
So while looking for morels today I found some cool looking mushrooms. I took a pic with my phone and looked in the mushroom ID book I just bought and sure enough they are in there. They're Dryad's Saddle. Not supposed to be delicious by many accounts but they are decent tasting when young, I've read. Anyone have any experience with these?
-
it should help. There were more last year and they were a bit bigger then too. I would think it is because it has been so dry recently.
-
Checked my patch today and they are up! Saw about a dozen of them poking through the leaves but they were tricky to see because although they were above the leaves, some of the leaves clung to them. They were all about 2 or 3 inches too. Also found a sea of leeks in another spot I was looking for morels in. Plan on making some potato leek soup tomorrow. I'll probably pick some of the bigger morels tomorrow and let the little ones grow. I really don't think they all spouted yet because last year there were many more.
-
you must cook morels before eating. I slice them in half, run them under water quick to remove any debris and saute them in a pan with a little olive oil and a little pad of butter. Flip them after a few minutes when the side is golden brown and hit it with some black pepper and a pinch of salt before serving. Goes awesome as a side to venison.

Founds 2 morels today while I was raking leaves and pine needles next to 5 big pine trees. The first morel was about 2 inches tall and the other was about the size of a grape. Cmon grow grow grow. I'll have to get out asap and look for more now that I know they're growing but it'll be hard when they're not above the leaves yet. Next 2 weeks should be great.
