How About an Official 2015 Gardening Thread?y
phade replied to wildcat junkie's topic in General Chit Chat
Started some seeds this weekend. Not planning on a huge garden sq ft wise, but a little variety in the works. Carrots are way late for me and I may not even bother at this point getting them in the ground. Doing some potato, beans, peas, cucumbers, and tomato. -
Don't really care unless it impacts me. How's that for "not in my backyard"?????? LOL. Apparently this is a legit topic.

Iphone users beware/history of where you go on phone
phade replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
We found a lost iphone one day while it was lost during a push about an hour prior...the find my phone feature worked brilliantly. We would not have found it otherwise. -
8 years out of rubber boots? You must hunt from your couch! JK.

Remember some/most temp ratings are for active walking.

It's not complicated - we need to let it all play out. I'm not assuming or thinking anything "appeared" to have happened until the autopsy is done, the charges are brought and a decision is rendered. Pretty simple. I have had a fair amount of visibility to vet practices and the stories that come through are just as likely to be hogwash as they are truth. Things people do to pets sometimes are unreal, but at the same time, stories made up from emotional owners are just as frequent. It's a good reminder for me to just say, let it play out then complain/pass judgement at the owner, the shooter, or both.
-
LOL, a measuring stick. It's huge! Just because it works for you in your scenario doesn't mean it can be painted with a wide brush. Management practices are starting to show it.

I don't care where they are or what they are doing in January-July when I'm dealing with a 40 acre parcel. They can go eat all of the neighbors crops for all I care and he can pick up their sheds and wonder why he's not there in-season as often as he was when the season was closed.
-
Grow, I am not arguing with you specifically, but just hear me out. I don't see this as so clear-cut. The vet's observations do not prove anything, and arguably help the shooter. 1. If shot from behind, at close range, that makes sense as a possibility because we all know when dogs lunge their rear-ends can twist if they leave the ground or are rolling around. My dog does it all the time when I hold a ball up high where he can't reach it...he lunges, his rear end twists, and he ends up perpendicular to me, slightly facing away, etc. This isn't a human being shot in the back that is more of a telltale sign. Fast forward to the 2 minute mark to see this in action: 2. Close range just further supports the defense that the dog was presenting a danger. If it were not close range, that would instead support the story of it crapping on the lawn. Close-range = evidence of a potential danger/attack. Autopsy being ordered just means its being researched, it doesn't mean guilt, etc. unless the results indicate facts proving otherwise. Again, all we are hearing is one side of the story, from an observer with a slanted viewpoint (not you, but the source of info to you). Let's not rush to judgement until due process plays out.

Managing year round is great when acreage is available. Managing for year-round food supply on small acreage brings into question this rule of thumb. Some managers are now starting to gear toward attraction in-season when goals are to have deer on the property when they can be killed. Obviously cover is a good thing, but from a food source prospect, small acreage year-round focus might not be as efficient of time and resources as targeting the season periods.

We're not hearing the shooter's side. Obviously if the cops are arresting him, there's more than just smoke. But, it'd be interesting to see if there's a defense to this. What happens if the shooter says - the dog came into my yard aggressively to me and my animals, backed me up, I attempted to shoo him off and away but to no avail, and I had no recourse and had to shoot to protect myself. I called the owner and told him of the situation and that he needs to get down here fast so we can help the dog. I couldn't attend to it because it had been aggressive to me and I didn't want to further worsen the situation. The owner responded and when he arrived, he got irate at me after realizing this was more serious than he appeared to take it on the phone. Now he's saying things to get back at me. And as an owner, he has routinely not provided the level of responsibility a dog owner should have, as evidence by a neighbor (Grow) admitting that the owner could take better care of the dog, and by not allowing it to free roam as it has been on the loose times before. All the vet heard was second hand info from the owner, the owner is the only one who said it was because of the crapping on the lawn, etc. Everyone here is taking for truth that the dog was shot for crapping on a lawn - and we don't know that other than what the owner has said and told to the vet, etc. If the shooter admitted it to the police, then obviously that is different. It's not a stretch in my mind for someone to make such a claim falsely to get back at someone for shooting their dog - the emotional attachment is strong and even people who "would never do such a thing and make up a story" have and will on much less impactful things, let alone a pet getting a lead injection. I am sure there is more to the story, but it just seems hard to me to convict or even press charges unless the shooter admitted to police or third-party directly, or some other evidence is there. All I have read is hearsay from the owner's side. It'll play out.
-
He said she said. I see nothing other than the owner saying this without more details. I am sure there is more to the story than he said she said for the cops to arrest him, etc.
-
True, but also at the same point and time, there was a post on trespassers yesterday where the ECO recommended arming oneself in the OPs area because of bears. Think about that advice for a second. Arming oneself specifically due to bears. And you live where bears are. And they end up in your driveway or backyard and you happen to be outside, etc. What is reasonable and legal might not be the same in this situation, but if an ECO is telling someone to arm himself in the woods, imagine the advice given if in your yard and a bear is there.
-
Unless I am mistaken the shooter supposedly said this to the owner and nobody else. I don't find it out of the realm of possibility that the owner could be stating this falsely or extending the truth a fair amount. People get emotional about their pets, and the owner may have downplayed the shooter's call, and when arrived, realized it was more serious, and is now taking it out against the shooter. I'm not defending the shooter, just playing devil's advocate because we're all reading a very one-sided view of this event. Several posters have basically commented on the idea that the shooter did so as a warning shot that went bad, but if we trace that back, that was just the "opinion" of the OP. There has to be more to the story.

Can you find me a $10 tractor? Because that's all it costs me to wipe out a half acre or so (and that's not buying in volume).

I'm a Lacrosse guy. Never been a fan of Mucks. Rubber boot fit is so peculiar though, so I have to force myself to look more at the fit first and then figure out of the boot can hack my use/need. Beachpeaz, if you want a pair of early season boots, Bass Pro released a cheap version for like $60 or so. I've had great luck with them. The neoprene isn't as stiff so putting them on is ever so slightly less easy than a pair of the first generation Lacrosse Alpha mudlites, but I've had them since August and done ALOT with them on and think the value is great. So much so, I bought another pair for the price. The only other minor annoyance is the insole pad will slide out once in a while, but that has more to do with getting the right size (mine are probably a touch too big). Even if I get a hole or blow the first pair out and use the second pair, $120 for two seasons of what I put them through is a heck of a value. I wore them into the low 30s before I moved over to my Lacrosse insulated. If I get a second season out of the first pair (meaning stand work, scouting, and October hunting), for $60...I'm happy as a pig in poo. http://www.basspro.com/RedHead-Camo-Utility-15-Waterproof-Rubber-Boots-for-Men/product/14032808262943/

I don't pay much attention to boxing anymore, but for all of Mayweather's Dbaggery, he's smart enough to have a team that makes him money with the money he's got. He's worth $280M before this fight. Would love to see him KOd but this fight is a few years too late to be a prime matchup for both. I think Mayweather comes out on top in some capacity. Alot of the tickets never hit the free market being reserved for high value audiences to the casinos.

If the dog was threatening or attacking the livestock or the humans, there's not much recourse if it is one's livelihood. I doubt anyone knows the real particulars of the situation, but if the livestock were being threatened or harmed, not much one can do but shoot the dog or try to stem off an attack. An animal that can be petted and friendly one minute can turn in an instant for whatever reason, just like humans.

I just bought a gallon of gly.

Congrats to the both of you. I'd have never thought your old man was 76 by that pic. Good for him.

Are deer spooked by Trail Cams ?
phade replied to fasteddie's topic in Trail Camera Reviews and Info
I set a cam the weekend before last and have zero intention of touching it until me or Moog are walking by it to hunt a stand down past it come October or November. Once the card is pulled, I'll use it to figure out how the deer are using that corridor for future seasons and maybe a little intel for this season. For some people that'd be blasphemy...not being able to check cards. Who cares. I want the info to use. My cams give me 50% intel for this season and 50% intel for next season. An acquaintance of mine has run a trail cam on the same tree at a pinch point bucks take as the rut kicks into gear. It's been up three years now, and he only checks once per year. He can't hunt that spot often due to work/locale, but let me tell you, the pics/info he captures is nothing short of eye opening. If only he had bandwidth to take advantage of it. We have two spots that cams have proven set dates to hunt by just letting the cams go get the intel needed long-term. I started using cams around 2000 or so. I've made more mistakes with cams than probably everyone else on this board combined. That said, cams are a great tool when used properly (or as close to as possible). Knowing that they are just "one" trick in your bag rather than the whole bag, is a big difference maker. Plus its also fun to be at work and getting shots like this texted to you... -
I'd also print copies of the pictures and place them in zip lock baggies and post them on every posted tree on the property. Then, I'd turn around and staple the picture to every telephone pole on the road they likely live on, post them in each local supermarket grocery store wanted/for sale billboard, etc. I'd also ask for a few business cards from the ECO...print out a couple copies and adhere them to the same trees on the border. Make it so these people (in addition the the legal means) feel like its no longer worth the trouble. If they still do, then you can really hammer home on catching them with the ECO.

Are deer spooked by Trail Cams ?
phade replied to fasteddie's topic in Trail Camera Reviews and Info
LOL. Seriously Papist, I don't know where you come up with this stuff. The alternative is to not shoot yourself in the foot by using proper cam and hunting techniques to give you the best bang for your buck without the added risk of blowing up a pattern. Setting a cam on a trail a buck is using regularly and then checking it, and then setting a stand on/near it, likely results in more mature bucks than not...knowing you were there and risking all the work you just put into it. I'm not talking about being high and mighty hunter here, just basic logic. There is zero need to have to get a pic of a buck on a cam on a trail he may be using to kill him off of a pattern. Work backwards to find him until you can't push it and then go in and hunt with the stand on your back or make a very well prepared effort to get in and out with as little damage as possible. That is what beachpeaz is talking about. -

How so? What makes little sense to me is setting a cam on a trail that likely is being used by a buck in a pattern and then having to check it and "go through the effort" of getting a stand in there. -

No. Cam noise occurs when filters are moved. Cam was out 5 months before this video and was not checked during that time. The issue is trail cams can and do impact deer, especially mature bucks, when their disposition is such.
