Who has a trail camera out in this snow?

I've had a few cams under water...just another day with game cams. Being buried under snow isn't a worry, lol. -

I have four out...been wanting to check them. Been out quite some time without being checked...thinking before new years, but can't remember exactly when. A couple are loaded with lithiums and a couple with new alkalines. Should be interesting to see what the performance is on them. I do not normally run cams beyond a post-season survey poke (ie a shot in the dark) Unfortunately, I have zero idea when they will be checked...probably when the best weekend day exists to start shed hunting. Maybe July? -
probably meant fawning

I didn't listen to the sound, but it appears they did not talk about how they were precooled or the temp/environment of each cooler at the start of the test. A few degree temp difference inside each cooler at the onset impacts meltdown significantly. So much so, you could likely dictate which cooler has what amount of ice leftover.

There are alot of Yeti-competitors now. Are they comparable? I know even some of the retailers (BPS/Cabelas) have their own house brands. On an unrelated side note, one of the two owners/founders of Yeti was on an episode of house hunters (or their variant island life, or carribean life). He had his yeti ballcap on and I eventuially figured out he is the owner even though they didn't say so right away. Seemed like a real likable guy. Easy on the eyes wife, nice family, and just seemed not like a pretentious SOB. He did spend a few minutes talking about the need for his business and how he came to the idea - very sound thought process and very business-like. I can see why they command a premium and I am sure Yeti will do well for a long time with his guidance.

Yeah, how much? In all honesty, I never even looked at Mossberg levers. Wish I had.
-
Liberal. Why do we need more rules? (joking)
-
That is one pretty lever. I just bought a marlin, but wow is that nice looking.

And that is why people there should shoot the 25lb fawn. Not shooting it only advances this effort imo. Sorry, somehow deleted this from my last post.
-
I'm done with this conversation. Put my 2 cents in.
-
I am sure they have. It will only be a matter of time before the volume, expanse and breadth of non-hunting efforts increase to the point your ability to hunt or your enjoyment thereof, is negatively impacted.
-
This doesn't make sense. Nobody is talking about increased breeding of 6 mos. olds in LI. Please re-read and let me know if that question still pertains.
-
Shooting a fawn and being carried out by a hunter vs. a fawn that can't get up in Mr. Neighbor's yard, stumbling, bumbling, and dying next to the garden gnome. See which one results faster in sharpshooters or resdidents crying for resources that reduce the hunting opportunities across the board.
-
Steve the problem is a big winterkill or starvation is much more visible to non-hunting residents. It's also the ammo they need to say hunters can't get the job done as you noted.
-
There is an easy way - sharpshooters, birth control, etc. Failing to shoot a fawn in such a situation doesn't sit well with me (for me personally). I would feel like I am a poor steward of the land/resource and am being complicit in the downfall of something I value. People will take away hunting or impact it negatively, and if I'm passing fawns, I'm a part of the problem.

I fear you are applying logic in an apples to oranges scenario. This is likely a mistake Grow when in a situation where overpopulation is a major issue and can actually compound the problem if this a strategy employed widely. Reducing adult doe population results in increased breeding success and recruitment. When in situations where overpopulation is occuring the average breeding success rate and fawn survival rate is less. Fawns in overpopulated areas are less likely to be bred or engage in breeding that year (as opposed to our areas where doe fawns are bred more commonly) because the needed body weight cannot be acheived. Also, the adult does have a lower successful breeding rate in the overpopulated area - meaning they're not likely carrying a fawn or twins as often as they would, say, up our way. As well, fawns are also typically recruited at a rate that exceeds the herd's need and represent the largest age class in a herd heading into winter/late season. So, strictly targeting adult does rather than balancing harvest that includes fawns (bb and doe) results in: Increased breeding success of adult does Increased fawn recruitment (surivival 6 mos.) Allows the single largest age class to move upward into the next age class without much harvest - at which point they become breeders. The proper strategy is to NOT pass fawns imo, whether does or bb in this scenario. They should be included in harvest opportunities with adults. I'm certainly not a biologist at all, but I have learned in specific scenarios the hesitantcy to take fawns is one of the hunters' (as a group) biggest downfalls to being able to control deer numbers. It manifests itself in the worst way in the worst scenarios - people saying they won't shoot fawns in over-populated areas - whether it be for meat reasons, the old yeller effect, or otherwise. Not shooting a fawn in an extreme overpopulation situation is akin to supporting sharpshooters, birth control, and other non-hunting measures, and not being a steward for the land/resources. In most cases this is done not because of neglect, it's because there's not enough knowledge spread to make it part of the cultural thinking of hunters. We're our own worst enemy, and this is a prime example.
-
Hunters are the main tool that controls deer numbers. If we don't, there will be other measures in place. The winter kill down there is likely greater because of the overpopulation. Who cares if you only get 7lbs of meat when tags are plentiful - you are doing your part to control the population. That 25-30lb fawn probably ate food that would have otherwise been eaten by deer more likely to survive, so it's a double bonus. Nature can be cruel, but if hunter's are not controlling deer numbers, people who are not hunters will take a larger role impacting something you value...deer hunting. Its sort of like voting, if snipers come in, you don't have much room to complain. They won't think twice about shooting a fawn, because they'll have already shot it dead.
-
It's not even just a numbers thing now...those dead fawns consumed food during the critical loading phase for winter. Now that food source was for naught. Hunters shooting them in the season allows that forage to be consumed by deer that are more likely to make it through. So, shooting fawns in the fall hunting season eliminates a deer and also makes available food for deer more likely to survive.
-
Textbook scenario where doe fawns and bb fawns should be targeted during hunting season. I am sure more than one hunter passed them this season in LI. Now look.
-
And this is why shooting fawns is ok...

What fact is that based on? -
My wife talks alot. Alot. I mean the kind of alot where husbands develop selective hearing. For a reason, she cant talk much for the past ten days or so and the silence is deafening.
