  1. Cover and thermals dictate this decision outside of personal comfort. 15-20 is 99% of my set height. I have been as high as 32 feet, and that was necessary but not preferable. Even at 19-20, you start to reach issues with shots 10 yards and in risking single lung hits. If you don't have practice at shooting at that height, you will want to set up for 15-30 yard shots. I've shot some amazingly close deer at 15 ft. If the cover and thermals allow it, then 15 ft, 10 ft, 12, ft. etc. is fine. I have hunted one stand that is between 6-8 ft. and it just clears the cover to shoot...all you need sometimes.
  2. BTW, what and where is the new gig?
  3. Nice fish and good luck in indiana.
  4. I enjoy my s3. I like the ability to swap out batteries. Also like the micro sd slot. Easy to look at game cam pics.
  5. If deer can walk in a swamp or even swim in sections...they'll use it.
  6. Chrysthanemum...or however it is spelled.
  7. For the cost, it's always nice to have one on hand.
  8. Got Grow notice, the tassels will tell it. Generally if there is cow corn next door within eye shot, it's cow corn there too. Mixing cow corn with sweet corn often results in cruddy sweet corn for humans to eat.
  9. ASAT and Predator as you noted. I really like Predator Fall Gray and Brown Deception.
  10. I have circles dug around my apples on the lease. They're waiting for them.
  11. Good find....$600 for 80 acres is solid in NY. I pay that for a 35ish acre parcel.
  12. Eh, I'd be more interested in moose. Elk in PA are pretty neat to see from I've been told. I do have an immense desire to hunt elk out west someday.
  13. Double edged sword like the statewide anterless tag.
  14. Big difference in frame rate. 720 has 30 or so FPS vs. 10 for 1080.
  15. You aren't doing 1080 are you WNY? Drop that down to 720...big frame rate difference. Results in the 720 being better quality.
  16. Black Flash and video are a match made in heaven.
  17. This is going to be a pretty exemplar rut from the predictions. I don't put much faith in the variations of more than a day or two for peak rut.
  18. One of the weaker links in my game is being able to identify native browse while walking through an area. When life slows down, I'll take an interest in it more keenly.
  19. I'll tell you right now, I'd be sneaky dickens. That thicket in the cow pasture screams for a set up. I'd go in there, cut the most small, unnoticeable opening to step in, and cut two swathes about 3-4 ft. wide and as long as seems necessary in a V shape with the bottom of the V being the set up point and in sucha spot the wind carries out to the field. Since the cows are in there and nobody wants to deal with them...that'll keep it fresh until they are moved out. As soon as they are...I'd go in there and set up and be ready all day. Better yet, the gun pressure will push them in there before the first sit. Easy (minus the blood letting) to do with a gas trimmer and a saw blade attachment. Keep it to yourself/partner and nobody will know you've got a gem spot.
  20. I don't think there is much variation date wise each year. I have however, started to believe that the best chasing days are in the Nov. 4/5 through 11 for wNY. I have more transient mature bucks on cam in that week period than any other. Those who take vacation are often at the mercy of picking a week, etc. I'd opt for that second week imo because it reduces factors such as a warm spell, which will limit daytime activity to a degree. Nothing worse than taking that first week of November off and it's your only five days of vacation...and sitting in 65-70 degree sun.
  21. Good luck...hopefully the cost doesn't get prohibitive. That's alot of investment into a property with others who are not partaking and on ground with no lease/ownership. Been there, done that, and been burned more times than I care to admit. I won't go that route again.
  22. Congrats on the new land to hunt. Be sure to take good care of the farmer to establish a long-term relationship that will help you hunt that ground for years to come. Now is a tough time to scout, but you should start now rather than later. I would walk the field edges and start to identify trails leading into and out of the corn. Take an aerial map with you and look for points or hedge rows jutting out into the corn. These places can often be great early season spots and also if they happen to be left up longer into the hunting season. Pick out the funnels and check them for hunting sign. Sounds like you don't have hunting competition on that same ground, so that is nice. But, don't let that fool you as trespassing happens. If you find rock solid sign, buy a few cheap stands and get them hung now.
  23. In most instances, they are neighbors or distant family members who give me permission to do so. As long as you have permission, then all is good. One elderly neighbor lets me hunt within 75 yards of his home with the shotgun (only shooting away from the house)...I often give him a doe each year and cut up his firewood. People often fail to realize how far 500 ft really is in terms of distance to a house. Alot of people probably break that rule, sometimes unknowingly. I remember reading somewhere that if you took a 500 ft line and drew a circle around a house, that it'd eat up 17 acres or something along those lines.
