  1. that's some passion about food plots and baiting. It almost hunting season.
  2. Even you wouldn't see that fawn from the lane. Hoping the bucks start showing up by weeks end. No corn in the area should concentrate them.
  3. No hard time at all. Just want him in the best possible setup being his first time 'round with a bow. Bad habits are hard to kick once started, so best to get it right as possible from the starting gun. Sort of like buying bows. Or game cams. LOL.
  4. The Moultrie, Spypoint, and similar style network systems are just headaches. I don't know why they try to complicate things. A system like BEC is nice, and they've perfected what Moultrie wants or wanted to do, but it's very expensive and more than I am willing to pay. I'm unsure of the latest cost for Moultrie, but I know Spypoint is up there. In today's world the best option is BEC or the MMS route of the Covert Code Black or the Panda GSM. I strongly prefer the Code Black because it holds 12 batteries vs. 8 for the Panda. Both are made in the same factory in China, but those extra four batteries make a world of difference in my opinion in getting better field life without an external/solar connection. Plus, customer service via Covert is heads above HCO. If you have reliable at&T service or Tmobile, and you want to get into such a set-up, PM me and we can talk.
  5. I have a 28" DL. I shoot bows with a 28" DL and a d-loop. The problem is the 1" mods. I assume the design allows for tweaking of DL to reach a 1/2". A 1/2" DL change might not sound like much, but it is huge. Especially when considering the majority of millions of compound shooters are between 28" and 29" DL.
  6. D-Loop doesn't change the DL...just anchor point. Did the guy at Martin tell you that?
  7. How does that make any sense at all? Your shot angle gets exponentially worse as your stand height increases and your shot distance (base of tree outward) decreases. a 5 yard shot at 15' is much less difficult than a 5 yard shot from 20, 25' and 30' stand by comparison. One lung hits become much more common at those taller heights. Are such sets necessary in certain situations, yes. But, does it make little difference? No. It makes a big one in relation to shot angle.
  8. The problem with today's arrow sub-industry is that they've caught onto the trend that bows have carved out. Arrow manufacturers are now often rotating models of arrows out after a year or two rather than long continuous runs. While this may seem interesting and innovative, it's more work for a hunter to get a reliable working set up. Heck some keep the name but rebadge it and change the GPI. When I land on an arrow combination that works well with my bow, I generally get online and buy several dozen (4-5) of the arrows/shaft kits. Since I tend now to keep bows 4-5 years before rotating into a new model, I no longer need to worry about getting a nice setup and then not being able to buy the same arrows my bow is setup with. I still have two dozen left of my Epic STs and they stopped making them a season or two ago.
  9. The eberharts model corn stalking very well. Gun can be dangerous, but if you know you are alone, then so be it.
  10. I agree that they are good heads, but that's a blanket statement and I have had bows need adjustment. Better yet, its not a sight adjustment...to match field point and bh, you need to bh tune...typically a rest adjustment.
  11. No reason that setup wouldn't produce enough KE/momentum to push through a ribcage. I'm wondering if in the rush of things, your shot hit elsewhere with a deflect off of something. Maybe offside shoulder.
  12. I'd move mid-west in a heartbeat if my wife would allow and the family wasn't tied down here. And of course, there is the career component. Certainly not a bad place here, but would love to move out that way someday. Best of luck out there 5.9. I'd love to make to IN to hunt some day. Maybe we can meet up then.
  13. I grew up hunting in Virginia where taking canoes and flat bottom boats that'll fit in a truck bed were the norm. In many states where this is popular, they even allow it with boats paired with motors, the caveat being that the progress of the boat had to be stalled out (i.e. the motor not causing the boat to make way). The tactic would be if you saw something, to turn up stream quickly to kill the momentum of the boat and kill the motor to make a legal shot. Having said that, the real value in a canoe, zodiak, or jon boat, is being able to stealthily get away from other hunters and at the same time approach deer from a weak point in their game. Inside turns of creeks and rivers are valuable bedding areas for mature bucks. These are often set up so that scent is blowing from the land to the buck and out over the water. With an inside turn, the deer can likely scent and see nearly everything coming to it, save for a water approach, which predators don't often do.
  14. X2. A properly tuned bow even with lower poundage and a matched arrow/bh will easily go through a Rib cage or the flat of the blade. It's the knuckle in the shoulder that gets hunters. Muzzy used to be great, but between bringing their manufacturing in-house, and then being sold off to Rage/conglomerate, many people have reported flight/tuning issues. Slick Tricks standard and magnums aer wonderful. I shoot the standard as I like the blade angle better. They penetrate better than any head I have seen while doing my own personal testing. I always have one in my quiver along with my Grim Reapers.
  15. That stinks Grow...hopefully it isn't too bad. We had three generators going to power the fridges and hi-power fans last month. Not fun.
  16. I got 1,106 10 second vids on my 2013 Black 60 on 12 Utilitech batteries - which was the second pull on that cam and batteries. I want to say the first pull had 400-600 vids (I'll have to look back). On the second pull, around 600 or so, the night vids went to 4-5 seconds due to the power loss. So, that would put use up to about 1,000-1,200 full 10 second videos on cheap batteries. The day videos wer full length after that, but 4-5 second night vids for the next 500. That's very good life imo on a set of batteries that retail at $0.22 each x 12. I've had wayyyyy too good of luck with the Utilitechs to ever think about using anything else for the cost/use. I'm testing only using 8 batteries at the moment in that cam now. Go to Lowes and buy the 100 pack for $22. Won't need new batteries for the cams for a while.
  17. You should try video. Sure, some deer are inquisitive. I've got hundreds of vids of deer licking my cams. But, they certainly are not mature bucks. Big difference.
  18. That pic count is on the low end too as the cam was set up to take photo after photo to drain the batteries fast. I have used the same batteries (brand) in a Black 60 and hit 20k photos on 12 batteries....$3.00. Can't beat it.
  19. No, I have a few mixed in with my other cams. They are very useful for very specific situations: 1. Distance - My lease is nearly an hour one way from the house. I can set the cam and not need to check it often at all. 2. Scrape/Funnel/Rut assessment - I can see when the action picks up. 3. Remote areas where entry and exit cause too much disturbance 4. Security 5. Beds Not cams you want to use to take a ton of photos (because 1 minute send process) or super long battery life. You get 900-3,000 photos sent on batteries, but in the same cam minus the MMS feature, the batteries will take 30k photos. Also, right now photo size is limited due to network of 640x480. There's not commitment on fees. $5 for 200 texts/emails $10 for 1k, $20 for unlimited. You are not locked into a monthly fee per say. Since you can't bait or use licks in NY, you aren't going to get tons of photos on a one minute delay setting.
