looking for new hunting land plz help
phade replied to hb270deermanager's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
One of the bigger mistakes people can make, and I have been there, is to tie yourself to one piece of ground if you don't own it, and in many cases, even if you do own some land. Please understand when I am saying this as I am not trying to be mean - I'm not throwing stones because I have done this before myself. It's not the landowner's fault - it solely relies on your shoulders. Complacency kills, and in this situation, it really has. I believe you have posted before about this sale potentially taking place - and posting about it in July is a bit of a late start for this season. I've been there and done that, and I hope I never make that mistake again. I wish you the best of luck finding a place, sounds like someone could mutually benefit from letting you on to hunt. -
I wish I had more time to devote to other pursuits, but my fall chase for deer drives me 365. Not enough hours in the day or free passes from the wife.

3.5 y/o bucks aren't a dime a dozen here Virgil, but there's almost certainly one 3.5 to target on a farm, or parcel of any appreciable size. WNYB is content to take him if given the chance and that's commendable. He's going to be solid at 3.5 if he outwits WNYB and the others there. Still not mature at 3.5.....butttttt it is NY, lol.

I've been deabting on getting a kisser button, but never made the leap. I shoot pretty well now, but I see so many benefits to it. I certainly don't put much credo in the tv personalities, but certain hunting "pros" that I believe make the cut, almost all shoot a kisser. I'm talking about the ones that hunt the larger bucks and only have TV as a second-level component to the hunt.

Facemask...I usually use a one for turkey season with mesh during bow season until it gets cold, then a mid-level one and finally heavy duty during regular season. SHouldn't be an issue when looking through a scope, that's easy. The challenge is with bowhunting and your anchor imo. Not an issue for you and the xbow.

A few of his points are no longer bulbing...so he probably doesn't have much left in him to grow. I'm sure that parcel has bigger badder bucks.

Gotta be a better guy around!

Do deer jump the sound of the string or the sound of the arrow/broadhead?
phade replied to huntography's topic in Bow Hunting
That buck never moved. I watched the arrow for about 40-45 yards but didn't see impact. Only his reaction. Looked like a horse coming out of the gate....zero reaction and then explosion when the arrow thunked. It's not a frequency of shots thing - it's darn near zero to have a deer jump a string or even attempt to do so at the 35 and beyond mark. It's just observation from experienced bowhunters and mature buck killers, but its been noted on forums quite a bit. My personal observations back this up too. Interestingly, the 10 and under range doesn't have much string jumping at all. Most of these instances where people think it is the case is because they are shooting a tough shot angle and shoot high as is done commonly resulting from poor practice habit and form. It's the old story of not being accountable for your mistake.- 38 replies

Do deer jump the sound of the string or the sound of the arrow/broadhead?
phade replied to huntography's topic in Bow Hunting
Most people don't know this or don;'t recognize this, but there's a distance at which deer exhibit string jumping much more often. Shorter or further than that window, and the % of observed string jumping goes way down, only a mere fraction of what occurs in that window. That window is typically in the 15-30/35 yd. range. Beyond that, string jumping becomes pretty rare regardless of deer posturing. There's not statistical proof of this that I know, but anecdotal/emprirical evidence from very experienced hunters overwhelmingly showcase that window.- 38 replies

I have pics of quadruplets from many years ago on the property in Rush by you. They were from a 35mm cam, so I had hard copies, and they got soaked in the flood. They look horrible now, but very cool to see. Neat vid.

Again Doc, that's only one side of the coin. Reading maps is a skill. the map is a tool.

It's a double edged sword Doc. Good and bad come from it. In some cases it may be that it replaces hunter skill. In others, it may not and instead improves efficiency. I use a range finder, MMS game cameras, compounds, etc. I find it helps with efficiency in me making a clean kill. The other thing is back when, the target was less about mature/rack score. This change in focus en masse is likely more a factor in causing such a thirst for those tech advances. And, picking up a rifle is not necessarily equating to less skill because you perceive it to be a better tool. I know me personally, I am a much better bow shot than a gun shot. In fact my kill ratio is much higher with a bow.

If my entry and exit routes are not clean I don't hunt it. Unless I know going in its a one and done type of hunt.

Filter clicks and red ir most likely in this case. Pretty clear.

Throw that cam on video for a week in the same setup and spot. Itll be a great learning experience.

They're immature. They won't be one day (hopefully). Get the cam up out of their line of sight. I have had luck at about 6 ft and higher. Too high and you lose sensing ability on some cams. I average 6 to 8 ft with 10 once in a great while.

FG and BD are go to patterns. BD for pre-leaf drop. FG for post leaf drop. LIghtweight suit in BD and fleece in FG.

That'll only work for brown its down crowd...the trophy hunters won't want rack damage.

Touche'. Deer beds are a bottomless pit of conversation for me.

Depends if it's a spike or a doe. Moog toys around with superhuman draw weights just because he can, lol.

me, gjs4, moog, and a few others are on the same page. If you know he is there...no need to risk pressuring him out. Hunt him when the time is right.

I agree. Heart pumping. I've never been good at it, thus I have to work to my strengths in a stand or blind. I'd have to really work at being a western hunter. I so want to do it, and will in good time.

Shouldn't you be out lawyering or something? LOL. I'll also say what I said earlier about finding a decent set-up goes on both ends. When you shoot 80, 90, 100lbs bows, I don't care if you attach a tree saw, an axe head, or a ninja sword to it for a BH. The deer is going to die if shot well, ha. Heck it may die twice.

That hunter at last check averaged 3 deer over 130 a season. He did hunt multiple states all DIY, but the last year I spoke to him he tagged two of the three bucks in NY. It's a common theme I have seen from hunters who are mature buck killers who don't own or control elite ground.
