I am doing ok. I took the pool down last Wed, burned 1/2 of a vacation day taking our youngest for her road test in Buffalo last Thursday (I thank the Lord that she passed), and I took my wife up to the Adirondacks to see her folks and secured our winter's fish supply over the holiday weekend. Within the next few minutes, I should have enough packs of corn in the freezer for the winter, and I hope to begin gathering our red meat supply tommorow. Hopefully, she will be thankfull. Not much time left because pre season ends for me 1/2 hour before sunrise tommorow.

I will be up on that big poplar tree in the morning, hoping to catch a doe at breakfast. Will she go for the silver queen sweetcorn on the left (it is showing signs of fresh deer foraging), the radish/turnips in the middle, the RR corn on the right, last years white clover on the far left, or the fresh sprouted wheat in the foreground. All of it is in range. If any of it appeals to her, I ought to be having tenderloins for lunch. She left some silver queen for me. Right now, I am waiting for the water to boil, prior to having a little for dinner.

My mouth is watering right now thinking about medium rare fawn liver for lunch tomorrow.
-
No, but if one hangs around after I anchor its mama with a shoulder blade shot, I will definitely shoot one for the liver and the rest of that "melt in your mouth tender" meat. As long as I have a tag, a good safe shot, and a slug left in my gun, I will use it. The best thing about shooting a fawn in warm weather is that they can be processed immediately without aging to let rigor mortis pass. I also like the idea of keeping the pair together in "deer heaven" (mankind's food supply). I have two dmp's available and I am willing to do my part in trying to fill them.

I will gladly take the early doe firearm season, over full inclusion of crossbow at home in wmu 9F. That is my favorite of the recent DEC updates, by a big margin. After 8 years of no changes, I think it is safe to assume that we will never see full inclusion of crossbow in NY. I am quite satisfied with the best two weeks of archery season for the crossbow in the southern zone, but I would like to see the northern zone get another weekend, to make it fair for the folks up there. That would be especially good for the hard pressed merchants up there, who could use the increased tourism income. The reason the early doe is huge for me, is that I was starting to worry, being down to just (7) 2 pound packs of grind and one roast. It came along just in the nick of time. I also like the extra half hour beyond daylight on each end. I am more than willing to take the blaze orange hat or vest penalty, in exchange for that. The younger hunters being able to gun hunt is another big plus, as is allowing antlerless deer inside the Adirondack park blue line, during the early ML. I wonder if this is the new governor's way to start making NY great again ? It is great to see them taking such good care of us meat hunters.

Keep us posted on how that works out for you.

Sounds like a case of mistaken identity. No worries, we all make mistakes. I sort of like the coyotes now and appreciate the closed season. They help me out in my battles against the good for nothing raccoons.

You have quite the imagination.

I will be throwing any carcasses and butchering remains on my "coyote" pile if I connect. Of course they will be "off-limits" until October.

Early season Adirondack big woods food sources
wolc123 replied to ognennyy's topic in Big Woods Hunting
I am not familiar with that. The only other thing I notice them hitting hard up there is low hanging hemlock branches. Check out the browse line all the way around the lake up at my in-laws place. That tells me it is time to take out a doe. I saw this one feeding on cattails, down at the end of the lake on the 4th of July this year. -
I can usually get off 3 or 4 shots between cleaning using a little bore butter on the plastic sabots with 100 grains of 777 powder (2 pellets) in my 50 cal. I set it 1" high at 50 yards.

Wow, that is to the penny what I paid for this one at a barn sale up in Alex bay a few weeks ago. It is the most comfortable swivel office chair that I have ever tried. The arm rests are great and the height adjust works very well. This is the first one that I did not garbage pick. Folks are always putting them out by the road. The old guy, who runs a perpetual barn sale up there, was asking $ 10. I knew I needed it after I sat on it, but the best he would do on price was $ 8. He said it belonged to his son, and that he would not let him go any lower. The only issue with it is that one of the wheel casters does not match. That will be hidden from the deer by the 3 ft barnwood wall around my blind, so it should not matter.

Could be, but when they let the Toyotas in and changed "Winston cup" to "Nextel cup", I was out. I liked it much better and a true American sport.

I am looking forward to some slug gun doe hunting this weekend. I will have to see how deep woods off works as a cover scent. It will be my first time hunting in a t-shirt. I got to remember the orange hat. I may try out both of the new blinds that I put up this year. I only have room for one big doe in my deer fridge, so I will may skip Sunday at my folks house, if I get one at our house on Saturday. I got some shooting lanes trimmed by the one here on Monday afternoon, and I put a chair in it. I also trimmed shooting lanes around my other blinds here and made sure all the chairs and structures are good. I should be able to spend about two hours early and two hours late up in them on Saturday. I will be taking this new, ridiculously comfortable chair, over to the one at my folks place on Sunday. That's only if I come up empty at home though, because otherwise, I wont need it until crossbow opens in early November. I don't want the squirrels (it is loaded with them over there), chewing up the cushions. On second thought, I am heading over there Sunday, even if I do have one in my deer fridge from home on Saturday. I will target a button buck then. Those can be processed right away, without hanging until rigor mortis passes, as is best with older deer. I will bring along my slug gun for them and my pellet gun for the pesky squirrels. I am hoping for some fresh tenderloins for lunch and a neck roast in the crock pot soon. Hopefully, my old 1960's deer fridge still works. I have not needed it in about 4 years. The hanging weather in our insulated garage has been almost perfect by the time I got my first deer, in early November, for at least that long.

I agree, and I dropped that sport like a hot potato when they took out the cigarettes and let in the rice burners.

Early season Adirondack big woods food sources

May you get your first "inside the blue line" deer this year. Doing that with a bow would be about the greatest challenge possible in NY. I have managed 2 pre-snow doe up there in the last 8 years, just off the NW corner of the park, during the early ML week. It is a hell of a lot tougher without snow. Both of those were feeding in or moving to red oaks, when I popped them at under 20 yards with my .50 cal.. Several of the interior ADK zones are again allowing antlerless deer during the early ML week this year, since a DEC change enacted just last week. That greatly improves my odds of tagging a pre-snow deer inside the blue line anyhow. I wont be heading up until mid October early ML week. Snow makes things about 10 times easier up there. It makes it much tougher for the deer to hide and impossible to hide their tracks. I have managed two bucks (6 & 8 pts) up there, in the last 7 years with my rifle in the snow, after Thanksgiving. Both of those were taken just inside the park on the NW corner. One had a belly full of beech nuts, and the other was stuffed with corn. A guy just up the road from my in-laws lake house had a great crop that year. That fine, young red-horned ADK 6-point must have really liked that corn. The trouble with scoring on any Adirondack deer, is that it greatly diminishes the value of those taken in other places having lesser scenery and solitude (which is basically any place else that I have ever hunted in or out of NY state). That said, I am kind of looking forward to hunting for a doe with my slug gun at home in wmu 9F, in my t-shirt this weekend. That is another change the DEC just allowed last week. We are very low on venison right now and I am interested to see if my old deer fridge still works. I have not needed that in about 4 years. My meat supply has not been this low, since October 2016, when I was able to re-supply with my last ADK no-snow ML doe. If you can't find any other food sources, check out the grassy areas near the big highways. Deer hair on barbed wire fence crossings is a good indication of usage. -
I was able to kill 3.5 year old bucks on 3 consecutive years (2 with crossbow one with gun) with some Evercalm (the regular stuff) applied to my boots, about 100 yards from my stand, and a little rubbed on a branch near the stand when I got to it. I never had any luck with Tinks 69 or any other doe in heat type stuff that I tried, but hot apple cider has brought a few in from downwind (including one of the previously mentioned 3.5's on two consecutive weeks). That one was spooked in close, when he caught a glimpse of my shiny silver cider thermos, during archery season. His luck ran out the next week, when he again approached within shotgun range and caught a few slugs.

I went out for a little bit of catch an release (aka: "senseless maiming), prior to out trip home today. I caught 4 smallmouth over 12" this morning and 2 shorts, this one (about 17" ) was the biggest. They were only "tasting" the surface bait, but they were eating the 1/8 oz bucktail jigs.

This indicates that you are lost and confused. Texas is now on the right track. Hopefully, NY gets things straightened out soon. -
You would need a dmp for the wmu that has an open eary season.

The smallmouth weren't hitting as good this year, up in the Adirondacks, as they were last Labor day weekend. It took me a couple hours to get a limit of 12 - 17" keepers this morning, mostly on jigs. Last year it took 5 minutes and 7 casts on a surface bait. It was too windy for that this morning, bit I did get two keepers on one yesterday morning, when it was much calmer I just filleted 6 of them, which made 2 quart sized vacuum bags and should give me enough fish for the year, added to 10 packs of St Lawrence largemouth from last month. My wife and kids fish supply (all upper Niagara smallmouth) is also secure, so I am cleared to start working on our red meat supply with my shotgun during the early antlerless season, at home in WMU 9F, next weekend. This is a lot more fun than raising livestock or getting meat from the supermarket.
