  1. A fair point. I can't claim to know the numbers, but I would guess there really aren't enough trappers to seriously impact fisher populations. There certainly seems enough toxic waste to do the job though.
  2. I can agree with that. More money for land acquisition and habitat improvement projects would be great.
  3. That'll happen. I just don't understand the animosity aimed at an animal for doing what it naturally does. A guys gotta eat. I'm sorry if you feel your grouse are suffering but I think your invective is ill targeted. If you want to bring their numbers up shoot more crows and coyotes.
  4. I like it. There's nothing I like more than seeing good working class guns getting the love they deserve and getting the job done.
  5. I'm sure they do but I wouldn't think they are the only organization involved.
  6. Thanks. Like I said, rarely do they eat birds.
  7. They do eat more than eggs. Mostly smaller mammals. Rarely do they eat birds.
  8. Why all the hostility towards these guys? It's never as simple as "the bastards are killing my birds and eating their eggs." Their one piece of an extremely complex system that, were it not for our intrusion, would come to something approximating equilibrium. Nasty, sure. But not the only critter that eats eggs.
  9. CZ does make a decent gun but I have heard some issues involving customer service. Comparing the Uplander and the Bobwhite seems more an aesthetic matter. Both are good working class guns; extractors instead of ejectors, 2 trigger as opposed to single selective, walnut stocks etc. The fit and finish of the CZ will undoubtedly be better but beyond that they're essentially the same gun.
  10. They are a heavier gun, especially in 12ga. I don't know whether they scale the frames to gauge either and that can make a big difference.
  11. They certainly are affordable. It won't break the bank to get your hands on it and it won't break your heart when you take a dive and split the stock. I think so long as you don't expect it to hold up to serious high volume shooting it'll probably point where you aim and kill what you shoot. I don't own one, but I've shot a few and seriously considered one as my first bird gun.
  12. I get carded every time I buy shotgun shells at dicks as well. Covering their bacon I suppose.
  13. That and the fact that paying $400 for a cooler is insane.
  14. I'd watch a live cam on that for hours. Thanks for sharing.
  15. The LeMaster guide has silhouette/in flight drawings and I think Petersons does do. They're certainly helpful but on the page and in the air are two different matters entirely. If it is black magic, where can I get me some!? Mostly it's just a matter of scouting and observation (bring binocs). I think of it like a stake out; take a few days to sit and watch, see who's dropping in.
  16. Thanks for that info Mike. The LeMaster method is in my opinion the simplest and best ID reference around. Deserves a place on every waterfowlers bookshelf.
  17. I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but I'd start with a Petersons field guide or some other ID book. Some are pretty obvious, honkers and mallards especially, but I'm still trying to pin down the species I'm most likely to encounter before I even take a shot.
  18. I'd say that's a fair assessment of the matter. I wonder if NYC would consider going the way of DC. We might not like to admit it, but the money flows in both directions really. As a seperate entitiy, the upstate (north of Westchester?) region might then have to seriously consider consolidation of services and municipalities or face some hard times.
  19. I think Birco ended up in Vermont somewhere earning his keep on a preserve. As far as he's concerned, he's got the life.
  20. That is her! Ha! I like the looks of griffons. They're like big airedales.
  21. Thanks for the offer. I tend to agree with you on the GSP being high strung. There's a breeder real close that raises some but I haven't gone for a look. The right breed is a tough one.
