  1. My lease is adjacent to Cornell properties that butt up to conn hill, the neighboring lease north of me is directly adjacent to conn hill...short walk and I'm therez Almost like big woods down there! Ever see any bear or sign?
  2. Warming up I'm about to go trek this other ladder stand about a mile into the property... None seen from the stand I'm sure that will change once I have a ladder stand strapped to my back
  3. Again 3am beer pong hangover is immediate revoking of ones man card... Only accepted "up til 3 am" excuses have to either involve 1. crying baby OR 2. hookers and cocaine (never both reasons at the same time ofcourse).
  4. Biz your man card is on probation...either help with that siding or go hunting.
  5. Finally he admits it...been baiting all them big bucks with the good stuff!
  6. Pretty awesome morning got in nicely first time hunting this location tucked into a cluster of hemlock 20 yards from a 60 ft cliff: I'll be down by 10 wanna get another ladder set here and retrieve my Lone Wolf...oh yeah forgot to post this on beer or dinner threads last night...gonna do one of these again fur lunch:
  7. Always follow bone or connective tissue and you can't go wrong. I also always try to get as much rib meat (cover, not in between that's fur the mutts) w/the shoulder as I can and peel and fillet that as well. Personally I like the two pieces filleted above and below the scapula ridge as steaks and I always try to peel out and fillet as much as I can including below the knees and the dogs still get plenty of good trim. any filleted chunk from the shoulder, rib cover or around the neck makes for excellent seared and slowcooked goulash.
  8. Heading to the Newfield lease for the first time tomorrow AM. Gonna hunt while it's cool and then switch out my lone wolf hand climber (which has been locked in a tree for almost a year) with a ladder stand...only have to hike it about a mile! That'll be it for me this weekend I do believe.
  9. No more meat to cut so might as well hunt this warm weather....
  10. None seen but the guy I can't shoot til the 18th was making a racket in the pines again. Gonna pack it in soon and go cut up some hind quarters.
  11. 90% of my harvests come from public lands... You learn to pattern the hunters more than the deer...also learn to hunt escapes and exits. Honestly where I live there is not much pressure in bow season...but its not a bad idea to have private access come Gun opener.
  12. Had one for 8 seasons just gave it to a buddy great stand.... But the lone wolf hand climber is better...get the biggest platform. Amazon has them for 354 https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004XEHT8K/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1508506035&sr=8-5&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=lone+wolf+tree+stands&dpPl=1&dpID=51eL5-4EF2L&ref=plSrch
  13. Could have used all this damn wind on the way in thru the dorito gauntlet this AM. also maybe I should read my book more thoroughly fall turkey opens 21st here as well. Thanks fletch
  14. I've had the exact same experience with arrows under 400 and 64lb DW on nearly 2 dozen deer. BUT...I and many others have shared anecdotal accounts of hard recovered and un-recovered animals only to be found later as evidence of good shot selection and terrible penetration. I am not saying you will ever lose a deer to this problem but if/when you do you will probably change your mind. Edit: I took the word unethical out of my original post because it was not what I meant or intended. I think 450 and your DW is plenty fur most good shot selection. I tell people 500 because that seems to be a good threshold for bone pass throughs. Also on my first few archery harvests I used montec and on good shots the deer never knew they were hit, same with these stricklands. In my experience mechanicals loudly "Pop" open deer abs they always take off running.
  15. I'm starting to sound like a broken record around here but in my experience if you are NOT shooting heavy arrows and DW (500 grain arrows and over 70lb DW) then ANY mechanical is gonna eat momentum and result in what I have repeatedly observed, terrible penetration on otherwise perfect shots. I am now shooting heavy arrows and decent DW and I will still never go back to mechanicals or any other BH w/thin and/or moving blades. I'll get the off the well worn soapbox.
  16. One could in fact harvest more than 100 deer from the Tompkins DMFA per season (2/day all season plus 3 weeks in January)...good luck. I have harvested & tagged 8 in NY in 2013. My 5 tags my wife's 2 dmps and 1 hard fought DMFA (my only in 5 years there). Gave 2.5 deer away...lots of Christmas jerky that year!
  17. Simple fix is buy products 100% made and manufactured in the USA or atleast from other countries with fair labor practices and high quality standards like Canada and Germany.
  18. I've seen deer lick dew off hanging walnuts...that's it. They kill other trees with their roots by exuding the same chemical that makes them black. Boo walnuts I got em all around my property.
  19. This looks like a good PT regiment to me... Can your back the bolts out any and give yourself a bit of relief on DW? Obviously you need enough time to reset your pins then.
  20. Got home from this morning's hunt and dusted the latest tenderloins in sausage seasoning and made a meal: Realized it was afternoon and called it brunch: Then I took a nap til it was time to pick the boy up from school...great day.
