  1. Thanks for all the replies. Meat looks ok and stayed cold. I discarded the tenderloins and pretty much kept the shoulder/hind and neck meat. I'll make my brother-in-law taste it first lol.
  2. What is everybody's take on a deer that is gut shot and recovered the next day? Meat spoilage? Everything consumable, partial or none? Temps in the 40's, rained overnight and deer went through a swamp.
  3. First archery deer / buck. Been hunting for about 17 years and had a few opportunities but could never connect. I started hunting a new property last year which is almost 70 acres mostly wooded with one big swamp and one small swamp. Saturday I counted 5 different bucks, something I never encountered. First two bucks were a nice basket six and a beautiful ten behind him. They were about to come into a shooting lane but winded me and took off. One hour later another six snuck up on me while I was watching some turkeys and I was able to stand up and take a shot but misjudged the distance and it went under him. Went home for lunch by 12 and came back in by 130. Nothing in site all afternoon then out of nowhere off to my left walking along the swamp came a spike with a six behind him and literally came within 7 yards. They came in so fast and so close that I wasnt even going to attempt a shot because I figured they would see or smell me immediately. The spike spotted me and ran out in front but the six got distracted for a second by the spike and gave me a chance to draw. Unfortunately as soon as I released the deer jumped forward and my shot went further back than I would have liked. Arrow didnt pass through and I watched him running with it for about 50 yards behind the rib cage. Of course he ran into the swamp and I couldnt hear him anymore. I let an hour and a half go by then got down and started looking for blood and of course could not find any. I went to the last spot I saw him and found my arrow with some blood and what looked like intestines. We briefly searched the swamp but it is near impossible at night so we decided to pull out and head back first thing in the morning. Long story short he made it through the swamp and found him on the other side with a gut/liver shot. First archery deer/buck. No monster but it felt great. Lots of big bucks under my belt with a gun but this one feels more accomplished.
  4. Thanks for all the feedback. I am going to go with 130 Hornady Interlock. Heard good things.
  5. Anybody have a preference for there .270 and why for deer
  6. [quote name="TheFieldArcher" post="310942" Thats a beast of a truck. I love toyota 4x4s
  7. This is great news. I work 10 blocks away. Finally. It will probably be mobbed with people though.
  8. I learned my lesson and keep a small fire extinguisher 5ft away lol!
  9. Also took the plunge last year and bought a four burner genesis. Was delivered to me with a dented door and the wrong grate compared to what was advertised. Needless to say one effortless call and they sent me a new door and a new set of grates. Best company ever! Up at camp we have an older weber that is over 15 years old and still kicking effortlessly and whenever I need a part they send it and it is back to new.
  10. I got the same bow in the skullworks camo. Looks great and shoots great. A little heavy but I like that because some of these lighter bows feel like a toy and feel like they are going to break.
  11. I have a PSE Drive in Skullworks camo and equipped it pretty nicely and I absolutely love it. It is a little heavy but shoots like a dream. Not to mention it is a great looking bow.
  12. My buddy owns the same pistol. He just bought it about three months ago. As soon as he started shooting it he had the same problem. He changed bullets but no remedy so he returned it to the dealer and they sent it back to Ruger. A month later they sent it back to him and they basically replaced everything but the barrel and so far it seems better.
  13. That looks like me walking to my treestand after thanksgiving dinner. lol
  14. Congrats to you and your sign. Great deer.
  15. Nice mount. I would like to try and do one on my own. Just waiting for the horns.
  16. http://www.onlinebootstore.com/great-boots/items/828.html Best boots I have ever owned. Sort of the best of both worlds between tall rubber boots and standard leather hunting boots. Extremely comfortable, warm, waterproof and easy to put on and take off which is a big plus.
  17. It is above the Catkskills and below the Adirondacks. Right in between. I hunt 10 minutes outside of Cobleskill just north of the Walmart. Congrats on the deer. My buddy just got the biggest six pointer I ever saw and we know there are bigger ones on the property so hoping to cash in this year.
  18. Well that definitely gives me some hope because these trees definitely looked like they were hit with a cheese grater lol. I did not notice any tine marks on trees behind or next to because the trees were alone. I did however notice tine marks on the rub itself which reached around 4.5ft.
  19. Anyway of judging what size buck is rubbing on a tree based on the rub/tree size? I found some 2-5 inch trees completely ripped to shreds. Some rubs were 3ft long from top to bottom. The top of one rub was about 4.5ft from the ground. The property I usually hunt doesnt typically have too many rubs but this year I am hunting a swamp behind a farm so I really dont know what to make of these rubs.
  20. Took Friday off and keeping up with our opening weekend tradition of slaughtering a pig and having a pig roast. Plan on being in the stand by 5am saturday and hoping for the best.
  21. Congrats. Any deer with a bow makes for a great hunt.
