  1. Going to head into a woody spot in the Pine Bush in 4J this morning. Maybe fill a doe tag. Eager to put this afternoon's plan in motion back up the mountain in 4L. Good luck if your eyes are open and searching as the sun rises... I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  2. She'll wear that scar well. Beauty of a daughter. Hope you all get to enjoy some harvest at the family table, and that rifle being the reason why. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  3. That's a beaut of a buck!
  4. Looking forward to being in your situation tomorrow... Oh, and the pics tonight! Ha... Good luck!
  5. Saw a buck up and on hoof, nose down, in a field while driving in to work this morning. 4K, about 8:45 a.m. All day hunting tomorrow in a pair of locations, but I'm looking forward to seeing some harvest pics this evening! C'mon!
  6. "The Live from the Woods" thread has mostly been "Live from Work, Dreaming of the Woods, and Jealous of Those Who Actually are in the Woods." Ha...
  7. My current view: a laptop, a desktop screen, a bowl with the leftover smears of yogurt and granola, a coffee mug, a phone. In the background I hear the hotel tradeworker union protest on Albany's State Street, and keyboard clacking from my co-workers. The furnace kicked on and the air smells like stagnant dust. My mind, though, is miles away tucked neatly into the dream of a run-and-gun stand sit on the mountain this Friday afternoon. The weather forecast is showing me preferable, if not ideal winds from the west, and decent temps. Well, decent temps for what we've experienced to-date. I plan to hunt a buck I've named Home Boy. While the morning will be perfect, and I have all day to hunt, I haven't decided on where to hunt the morning. I can't get my mind off imagining the afternoon hunt. I'm going to head in a little after mid-day, say 2 pm, and come in around my neighbor's barn and house on the west (my only decent access point), dip into the ditch/gully, and walk until I cross Home Boy's trail. At that point, I'll cut south, downwind of his trail and walk parallel for 30 yards towards his point of entry into the woodlot. There's a few hemlocks before the dip into the ditch, and I'll pick a tree within them to hide my outline. The trees are mostly bare up on the mountain, and most of the leafy trees are now toothpicks. If my plan holds true, and Home Boy cooperates, I'll see him hang by the edge of the woodlot and then trot across pausing just before he heads down into the ditch to cross over into some thicker cover and down to a creek. It's at this point that I imagine letting an arrow fly about 20 yards. I can already imagine a crashing sound in the thicker cover, an easy blood trail, and the elation of coming up on him. Let's see if that dream materializes in anything remotely close. A sip of coffee, and it's time to pay attention to my email...
  8. There's the potential for an unintended consequence with this and methods similar to this. Be careful here. The issue is that when you apply that type of treatment, the tick may disgorge its stomach contents into you before it releases. So... You get the tick to back off, but you also run the risk of getting infected anyway. Here's what the CDC recommends: https://www.cdc.gov/ticks/removing_a_tick.html
  9. Torrential downpours in 4L, and winds with gusts up to 50mph on the mountain. No hunting for me today. Next opportunity is Friday, all day. Hoping for 4J in the morning, and to hunt the buck I've named "Home Boy" back up here in 4L for the evening. With this weather, all I've got are plans.

  12. Nice work! I hope you get to enjoy a job well done be it in stand or from behind the bar.
  13. Venison round on the grill with red potatoes and asparagus. Venison seasoned with sea salt, peppercorns, garlic, and rosemary. Had some friends up and used the "family roast" from last year's doe. Harvest with friends. Feels great, tastes great. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  14. Apple blossom round three... I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  15. Nice buck! Congrats! I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  16. Wish I was hunting... Good luck to all afield! I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  17. Ordered out from our local spot, The Towne Tavern. I get the feeling that it's a similar spot to this Yelling Goat I've been reading about... I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  18. I'm on the Evercalm train. Both this year and last year's does walked the same trail I used after scraping some on my boots. To me, they were trying to find the origin of the scent, and certainly didn't see me reposition in the tree stand. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  19. A quick note for posterity: I'm proud today. I bought my three month old son's Lifetime Sportsmans' License from the Town Clerk. In a few more months, I'll have saved enough to purchase his Lifetime Bowhunters' License. Here's to hoping he's a hunter... I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  20. NYS DOH just sent out this press release: New York State Department of Health Reminds New Yorkers to Take Precautions Against Ticks During Fall Outdoor Activities Reminder Follows Confirmed Case of Powassan virus in Dutchess County ALBANY, N.Y. (October 20, 2017) – The New York State Department of Health today reminded New Yorkers of the importance of protecting themselves against ticks and tick-borne illnesses as they participate in fall outdoor activities. Ticks remain active until the temperature drops below 40 or 45 degrees, so it’s important to take precautions and check yourself for ticks even as the weather cools down. This reminder comes as the Department has confirmed a case of Powassan virus, a tick-borne illness, in Dutchess County. This recently-confirmed case and three cases in Saratoga County from this past summer are the only confirmed cases of Powassan in New York State this year. Powassan virus is a rare viral disease that can cause symptoms ranging from mild flu-like symptoms to life-threatening encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). The disease remains extremely rare in New York State, with only 27 confirmed cases since 2000. “This should not deter you from partaking in all the outdoor activities that our beautiful state has to offer this fall, as long as you remain vigilant,” said New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker. “While you are outside taking advantage of hiking, hunting and leaf-peeping, or even raking leaves, it is important to take the time to protect yourself and your family against ticks and tick-borne illnesses.” “In Dutchess County, we have learned through decades of experience that several preventive measures can work together to offer the greatest protection against tick-borne diseases,” said Dr. Anil K. Vaidian, Commissioner of the Dutchess County Department of Behavioral & Community Health. “It is important for residents to plan ahead before outdoor activities, be mindful of exposure while outdoors, and to remain vigilant in checking for ticks afterward for the best chance of prevention against tick-borne diseases.” Best practices to protect yourself from ticks and tick-borne illness include: Wear light-colored clothing with a tight weave to spot ticks easily, as well as enclosed shoes, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Tuck pant legs into socks or boots and shirt into pants. Check clothes and any exposed skin frequently for ticks while outdoors. Consider using insect repellent. More information on repellent products is available here. Stay on cleared, well-traveled trails. Walk in the center of trails. Avoid dense woods and bushy areas. Bathe or shower as soon as possible after going indoors (preferably within two hours) to wash off and more easily find ticks that may be on you. Do a final, full-body tick check at the end of the day (also check children and pets), and remove ticks promptly. The Department of Health and its partners routinely collect and analyze ticks from across the state in order to better understand the tick population, tick behavior and regional trends in diseases carried by ticks. Current and retrospective tick collection and testing results will also be posted on the Department’s Health Data NY site by the start of tick season in 2018. The Department is also collaborating with the Department of Environmental Conservation to include tick-borne disease informational materials in hunter education and licensure programs; working with the State Education Department to implement new legislation requiring instructional materials for school districts and libraries to provide information about tick-borne disease; and planning to release a tick-borne disease surveillance and response plan, similar to the plan in place for mosquito-borne diseases, in 2018. 22. This strikes me as more of a headline grab, than a serious legislative push. Lesniak and Bateman are happy to get their names in the paper and faces on the local (election district) television news. If the actions of one hunter should ban hunting near residences statewide, what should the actions of one corrupt politician ban?
