  1. Bstrong, Good point. Same deal in LaFayette. It got almost no publicity. Just happened to hear about because I knew someone who worked in the town library. I hope we all stick together and don't let the issue slip away.
  2. All this conveys is that gun owners are vulgar. Won't help anything, can only hurt.
  3. Regarding ignoring the law and keeping an illegal gun without registering: This came up last night at the LaFayette meeting. The fellow that was the state police legal counsel responded. I think his name was Steve Hogan He gave a hypothetical example. He said "lets say you are stopped by the state police for speeding and there is AR type rifle hanging in your trucks gun rack and it is unregistered and you say you were unaware of the law". He said you would be given 30 days to comply with the law. If you didn't register the gun then you would be charged wirth either a class "D" or "class "E" felony. He said if you were found guilty by the judge you would have all you guns conficated in addition to having to pay a fine and/or do jail time. He said that that all people with registered weapons will be given a wallet sized voucher card. Another question came up as to how do you prove ownership at the time of the initial registration period. One of the three guys said you would have to show a reciept but the one of the other guys said at the time of the initial registation that a formal reciept would not be required.
  4. More information on last night's meeting: http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2013/01/tempers_high_as_frustrated_gun.html
  5. You are correct. I know now. My buddy who came with me (and probably most of the other 2 or 3 hunderd guys) and I were hoping there would be a real meeting. My friend came away pretty depressed by it all.
  6. I attended the governor's Safe Act Meeting in LaFayette tonight. It was a poor choice of venue as the crowd of guys was about 3 or 4 times larger than could be accomodated by the LaFayette court house. The three representatives of the governor said they could only answer questions about the provisions of the law not the wisdom or philosophy of the law. It was good to see the large turn out to this hardly publicized event and the solidarity amongs't fellow hunters and gun owners: http://photos.syracuse.com/post-standard/2013/01/pro_gun_rights_crowd_packs_ny.html Everyone was frustrated, but civil to the governor's representatives. The governors representatives said they would carry the message of frustration back to the governor ( for whatever thats worth).
  7. I think wearing comfortable undergarments can help ones shooting quite a lot. It's a pretty well kept secret.
  8. I agree with you have said but I have to say when woods hunting, which is mostly I mostly do, when my cheek hits the stock I'm right on with my variables on the low end settings of 1, 1.25, or 1.5 depending on the scope. Four power is a little high for me when hunting in cover. A weaver classic 1-3X 22mm sells for $157 at midway. I have used them on slug guns and rifles and have never had anything go wrong with them.
  9. The 30-06 is so versatile its not an easy question. I think going to a well constructed 165 grain bullet is a very good move because you pick up a better ballistic coefiicient and better sectional density compared to the 150. That should translate into better long range energy retention and penetration. If you plan on hunting something bigger than deer with the same gun then move up to 180's. I shoot 180's.
  10. Isn't it true that you were once the chauffeur for God? Or was that just a joke?
  11. How about a nice venison meatloaf. Venison Meatloaf 2 pounds ground venison Chopped onions (sautéed) Chopped celery (sautéed) Chopped mushrooms (sautéed) 2 eggs lightly beaten 2 TBS Parsley 3/4 cup bread crumbs ½ cup Parmesan Cheese 1tsp ground pepper Paprika 2 TBS Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp garlic powder Or ½ large or 1 small clove garlic minced 1 bullion cube in ¼ cup of hot water Butter Spray Sautee vegetables. Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. Spinkle a little paprika on top and spray top with a little butter spray. Lightly grease a cookie sheet or baking pan. I ussually just make a log and bake on aluminum foil ona cookie sheet or baking pan. Cook at 350 for 1 hour. Serve with mushroom gravy.
  12. turkersdaddy, I have found the new weavers to have very good optics and great light gathering characteristics. I have taken deer with with both the 1-3X and 2-10X classics in dark low light cloudy conditions and have been very happy with them in terms of brightness. The 1-3X 20MM is an awesome shotgun scope. I said 2-8X but the scope is actually 2-10X 38mm. I think the glass is great for the money.
  13. Nikon and Leupolds are both great. I like the Nikon Monarch Gold 1.5-6X42 the best as far as optics go. I also love the Trijicon Accupoint 1.25 - 4X for woods hunting although they have now gotten expensive. They are a very fast scope! I also like the economical low cost Weavers Classics 1-3X and 2-8X, have had great luck with them. They give you alot for the money. I always like scopes with good sized exit pupil for fast target aquistion. I also like variables that have a low end magnification of 1 - 2X since the large field of view and larger exit pupil will serve you well when that big buck gets up at close range. I am a throwback and like lower powered scopes for big game hunting. I was heavily influenced by gun writers like Jack O'Conner and Ed Matunas. The current trend is for higher power on the low end but I believe for big game hunting you are better off with a variable with 1-2 power on the low end and 6-8 on the high end.
  14. There are some furriers around that will purchase the whole fresh coyote from you unskinned or skinned. The Fur Shed in Weedsport will give $25 for a good skinned pelt or about $10 for unskinned whole coyote. The Fur Shed hours:Monday-Sunday 9am-7pm 2744 Trombley Road Weedsport, New York 13166 Home # 315-834-7416 Business # 315-834-9474
  15. We talk about impeaching people and voting people out of office but we are not being realistic. It's not that easy. The problem isn't with Cuomo or Obama, its with the voters. I understand Cuomo is still very popular with a 70% approval rating. We are not going to get him impeached over the SAFE act. People like Cuomo and Obama are slick spin experts who know how to look good and get votes. They will do or say anything to garner votes. They are pros! The problem is our ever more non-thinking ever-more government dependent electorate who can't see past it all. We have been losing the culture war. I would like to quote Laura Hollis who I recently heard speak: "Our largest primary social institutions - education, the media, Hollywood (entertainment) have become nothing more than an assembly line for cranking out reliable little Leftists. Futhermore, we have allowed the government to undermine the institutions that instill good character - marriage, the family, communities, schools, our churches." If we don't reclaim the family their is no hope and we all lose. For instance, take the inner cities where the leftist's like Cuomo get their most votes. Marriage is infrequent and unwed motherhood approches 80%. That trend is increasing even in the suburbs and rural areas. The best thing we can all do is to set an example and influence those around us especially our families. Strengthen the family and reverse the trends. It won't happen overnight but it is the only thing that will save us. I'm not saying not to write our elected officials, school admistrators and the media, but to really make a difference, we need to teach our children, grandchildren and friends not only about wisdom of the Second Amendment and the Constitution but we also need to teach them about the truth about character, respect for life, respect for others, and personal responsibility.
  16. With common sense being so rare in NYS .....I am grateful that we have a NYS sheriffs association. They seem to have their heads screwed on straight.
  17. If politicians can ban or make us register "black rifles" on a whim, without debate then they can just as easily do the same for more conventional looking rifles, shotguns or handguns. That is the problem.
  18. Honestly, one of the two parties have sponsorsed and authored 99% gun control bills over the last 20 years both statewide and nationally and you want me to believe it isn't a party issue?? Pro-gun democrats are becoming as rare as deer with wings!
  19. I wouldn't say the Republicans were to blame on this one! My Republican senator voted against it. Of the 18 that voted against it I think most if not all were Republicans. The reason it happened was that for the first time in many years the Republicans lost control of the Senate because most of the people in New York are liberal morons. Would have happened sooner if Republicans had lost power in the senate earlier. I'm not saying Republicans are Simon pure, especially since they have to survive in leftist NYS. But compared to Democrats they not the problem. Read http://online.wsj.co...=googlenews_wsj The only thing slowing down the Democrats sponsored gun control nationally in is the fact that the Republicans hold a slim majority in the House of Representatives.
  20. Bill sounds like a fine man. Undoubtably he will be dearly missed. Our prayers go out to his family.
  21. Surprise, surprize, but the thugs or ghouls are already here. I guess there is the less obvious incrementally slow usurpation of freedom by shrewd socialist elitistsis, which has been happening for quite some time in western socialist leaning governments. It can take place over years and decades but the ignorant non-thinkers never see it coming. As more and more of the population succumbs to centralized governmental control of their lives the people become like sheep and depend on the government for all their needs they don't question the politicians and are either not smart enough to see it or are too lazy to stand up against it. For instance Obama shrewdly shows concern about children (ie. surrounded himself today with kids to announce his new anti gun executive orders) while his policies and that of the lefts's promote through abortion the killing of 127 young human lives every hour, 3400 every day. Obama and the other politicians exempt themselves government programs they force on us. Obama and the left are putting private insurance out of business, he is forcing religious groups to advance govermnment policies that are against their conscience and he, Cuomo and left are destroying family farms in NY with their excessive regulations and taxes.
