  1. Doc, Is that a stream that runs along your driveway in the first picture or is all that rainwater? I heard 2 inches fell in places. I hope you didn't suffer any permanent damage.
  2. Letchworth is a great one indeed.
  3. Chris, Thanks for your service! My son is a corpsman, served with 1st LAR and 3/4 marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. Was based out of 29 Palms now is based out of Camp Pendleton. Good luck out there and welcome back!
  4. Ryan, Have a great hike. The Catskills are awesome. Post some pictures if you get the chance. Hunted the mountains around Roscoe a few years back. Very beautiful country.
  5. Anybody have some easy hikes with great views to recommend? A couple of weekends ago we hiked up bald Mountain near Inlet. It was less than an hour to get to the fire tower on top. Its nice easy walk along a pretty ridgeline. One is rewarded with nice views of the Fulton Chain. I took a snap shot (below) of Fourth Lake looking to the East. The familiar ridgeline of Blue Mountain is visible in the distance.
  6. We had company last night so tonight we are having a more informal meal.... grilled Hoffman hotdogs with our home made (and grown) sweet German red cabbage and home grown broccoli. Its been a great year for broccoli and cabbage. For desert we will have hand picked red raspberries from my neighbor and vanilla ice cream! A good evening to all.

    Hello

Hope you enjoy the site. Welcome!
  8. Welcome aboard! Thanks for joining us!
  9. Very good advice covert, I have had compasses get remagnetized for some reason and point 180 degrees in the wrong direction. Its happened to me twice and the first time it was the only compass I was carrying. Got back to where I was parked a rather late that day. I always carry three compasses now. The principle of redundancy is a good one to follow on critical items.
  10. Thanks, growalot, Doc, we grow most of the things the critters would hit inside a 3 foot rabbit fence. Outside the fence, They seem to leave the garlic, potatoes and winter squash alone. I did get hit by something in the melon patch which wiped out one hill of cantaloupe. I'm pretty sure it was voles. As the other melon plants have gotten larger they seem to get left alone. Since I don't grow sweet corn I don't pull in any coons which stay out in the cornfields. The deer seem to happy enough with the alfalfa and corn fields that they leave the garden alone. I replanted the cantaloupe hill which was destroyed with a fast growing small melon (Honey Rock) and surrounded the young plants with mouse traps to deter the voles. Caught a couple of voles but so far no more damage.
  11. Nice looking garden growalot. We had a late start but everything is growing well. Photos of main garden, garlic patch, potato patch, melon/winter squash /pumpkin patch (under black plastic mulch) and some recent planted Christmas tree seedlings. Just planted some fall crops.
  12. In my experience hunters have always accommodated non-hunters however the reverse has not always been true. You may not hunt on public ground but you should not treat your fellow hunters who may not have the luxury of access to private land so poorly. In the recent past animal rights group have illegally harassed hunters in places like NW New Jersey making hunting all but impossible. I can't think of a single instance whereby hunters attempted to deny legal land use to the non-hunting public. Please make such facts known. According to the DEC Hunters, fishermen and trappers are the only interest group that contributes directly to the Conservation Fund which is used to acquire and manage state recreational lands: "The hunting, fishing and trapping community in New York State is the only interest group that funds the management of the resources that are important to them." "Hunting, fishing and trapping license sales (1.5 million per year) generate approximately $47 million dollars per year that is deposited into the Conservation Fund." - 2013 Conservation Fund Advisory Board letter. (Available at the NYDEC website). Hunters, fishermen and trappers are the group most responsible for the public recreational lands yet and are the most willing to share those lands with everyone.
  13. Pretty sure there's a pretty big one approximately at the Mayor's Residence.
  14. Pigmy, I agree with you. You are quite right in that some hunters try to use volume of fire to make up for a lack of marksmanship, and that's a shame. Old Indian saying, given to me by one of my early hunting mentors... "One shot...deer, two shots ... maybe deer, three shots....no deer!" "A safe hunter is a safe hunter with any weapon, and an idiot is an idiot with any weapon." Well said!
  15. Thank you Mike, This was very interesting. Dove hunting would be a real boost to NY shot gunners and would renew interest in small game hunting.
  16. Thanks, I emphasized the importance of hunting access in my comment.
  17. Its all good deer country. Great clips. Its amazing how their eyes reflect light! Again, good luck.
  18. Bone Seeker, I am happy for you. He is a dandy. Roughly what part of New Hampshire ? I used to hunt the northern part of the state, Coos County and the west around Newport. Good luck.
  19. He's doing the breast stroke!!
  20. .338 Winchester Magnum? or one of the others? Oops I see you said .338 WM. Sorry. That's a great round! Have a safe and successful safari!
  21. I am not a fan of his music. But he certainly has a following in that department. Is he perfect? No. However, I give the man great credit for willingly taking on anybody to defend the second amendment. Yes he gets excited. No one expects him to be otherwise, its not his style to speak without passion. He speaks for the second amendment in face of a generally hostile media. Obama and Hillary already have the media on their side so they basically just have to show up to win,
  22. Agree with you philo. Here is a grouping from a 270 Winchester Remington Model 7600 that grouped 3-inches out of the box and now prints .65 - 1.00 inch groups at 100 yards. Spent time learning how to use a bullet comparator and a curved OAL gauge and adjusted cartridge seating depth for about a 15-20 mil bullet jump. The result was a rifle that groups less than a MOA. Typical target below. I did the same thing with two other 7600's and they both group .75 to 1.3 inches down from about 3 inches. One of the three 7600's had a bad trigger that also had to be addressed. It did take a bit of work and each rifle had a slightly different ideal seating depth. I realize many guys don't reload. Some hand loaders would be reluctant to make the modest investment in a couple pieces of equipment (Bullet Comparator which allows you to measure from base of the round to the bullet ogive and an OAL gage). Satisfying when it all works out. I realize that it didn't matter to the bucks that were shot but it gave me more confidence knowing I was shooting a squared away weapon.
  23. Sorry not to see this earlier Bubba, I confess to being away from this site for days at a time. Its a very good thing you and the others are doing. I'm sorry I can not be there next weekend.
  24. We a have a few buzzing around. My wife puts out the red things with sugar water. The are great fun to watch.. Every once in a while one gets into the garage and seems clueless on how to get out even with the garage door wide open. Comforting to see another creature besides myself come into a room and buzz around forgetting why he is there. I usually have to catch them with a fishing net and release them. I realize I may be interfering with the process of natural selection.
