Cabin Fever, Thanks for sharing your story for the benefit of all. Hope things will improve for you healthwise. Mbuck, that was a great video and that method of always being securely tethered during ascent and descent from a stand is great advice! Thanks!

I got interested in hunting when I was 7 or 8 years old. I walked home a half mile or so everyday when we lived in in Saranac Lake in the 50's. I saw some beautiful bucks hanging outside many homes in those days and hunters suddenly became my heroes. My Dad never did a lot of hunting but was my mentor and encouraged me. He got me my a Savage 410/22 combination for Christmas. A 22 went cartridge off (probably from friction) while I was closing the breech and a piece of brass became deeply embedded just above my eyebrow. My Dad took me to our family Doctor who was also a hunter. He removed the piece of shrapnel and closed things up so it looked just like a scratch. Neither my Dad nor our Doctor ever mentioned a word of it to my Mom (which would have brought my hunting career to an end). When I was a bit older Dad borrowed a Parker double shotgun that I used for several seasons hunting partridge and woodcock. College and the Navy took me away from the woods for a while. After I got out of the Navy and school I became a serious back woods deer hunter and a bit later when we moved to CNY, a serious turkey hunter. Thanks Dad!!

NY Antler, Thanks for an interesting and very nice inspiring post. I believe the proper spelling Dick's last name is "Johndrow". A very minor point. Somehow we got an extra "o" in there. Thanks.

I'm voting for Romney and Ryan precisely BECAUSE I have compassion for the poor and feel they have been use as pawns by the democrats who have institutionalized poverty long enough (since Johnson). We can supply health care to the poor WITHOUT a 2600 page bill that entangles a useless government bureaucracy into all our lives. What does that 2600 page monstrosity get us but a big fat Government which spends our tax dollars more irresponsibly so only a small percentage gets to the poor. With Obama everybody loses, top to bottom. He and the Democrats have got nothing good to show us for their years of unbridled abuse of power. Obama continues to use the politics of fear, envy and division to get the "useful idiots" to reelect him because thats all he's got.

Where I hunt I find deer change their habits quite a bit between summer and the fall. Mating and changing food sources are the main drivers I believe.

I would hunt does only if needed or required.

Dom, I prefer olive oil.
-
Dom, I grow a lot of egg plan and we cook alot of eggplant. The women seem to love the stuff!. For grilling: I agree it soaks up oil like a sponge. My best advice is make a small bowl with olive or other oil. We add a bit of minced garlic and a little salt. We cut the eggplant into slices about 1/2-inch thick and dip into the oil/garlic/salt mixture and put on a platter. Cover the barbeque grate with heavy duty aluminum foil and toast until golden brown on both side. For frying and making eggplant parmesan. Cut into slices 1/4 or 3/16 inches thick. Dip in a 50/50 mixture of milk and eggs. Coat with unseasoned bread crumbs. Put just enough oil in the fry pan to cover the bottom and heat to medium high. Lightly fry slices by frying them briefly on each side then browning after the small amount of oil is absorbed. To make eggplant parmesan, make marinara sauce ( add some oil in the saucepan, and fry some minced garlic and add crushed or pureed tomatoes before the garlic gets too browned). Add some sweet basil or oregano and simmer 20-30 minutes. Get some good mozerella and grated parmesan. Add some sauce to the bottom of a baking dish. Place a layer of lightly fried eggpant. add plenty of sauce since your eggplant is just lightly fried so it will absorb more sauce. Cover the eggplant layer with mozerella and a sprinkling of parmesan. Repeat as neceassary. Bake for about an 50 minute covered with non-stick aluminum foil or use toothpicks to keep the cheeze away from the foil. Remove foil and bake another 1/2 hour until starting to brown up on top. Serve up hot with extra sauce if you have it. You'll be a hero! Hope this help.

Please take a look at : http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/more_citizens_vote_with_their_feet_CTshpQumBXMZmUXsfw6OTM?utm_source=SFnewyorkpost&utm_medium=SFnewyorkpost or, http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/wealthy-Americans-defect-Obama/2012/06/24/id/443252/ The wealthiest Americans are now leaving the country at record rates, twice as many as last year, 8000 are projected to leave this year. That's about 18 times the number that left in 2008. Thats not a huge number of people but the impact will probably be significant. So another result of the Obama's plan to "tax the tar out of the rich" is that they are leaving the country at record rates. People who work hard and have the means to leave do not appreciate a business future that is uncertain due to a government that is either anti-business, incompetent or both. Its a bad sign. Those of us that are left will have to pick up more of the tab for useless government waste and lousy government efficiency. We will have to pony up even more as the current 42 cents debt on each goverment dollar spent it likely to increase. So don't be too surprized when taxes go up for everybody. We won't have as many rich guys to pay for all the waste because they are voting with their feet.

Government Dependence
adkbuck replied to Grouse's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Sadly a plethora useful idiots are aiding the stupidity of government dependancy and the dumbing down of America. Its an act of kindness not to give people handouts when they could be doing something useful and either earning their livelihood or learning a trade. Giving people temporary help to get back on there feet is one thing, dependency is quite another. There is no work that is devoid of value and dignity. Everyone who can do something or learn a useful skill unless they suffer from physical or mental disabilities. But to make people dependent on a system that obviates their development is a shame and dooms the individual and the country. Such has been the case with Communists and various forms of socialism and the ultimate outcome is never good. The fact that these types of slavery inducing policies which are driven by the lust for political power have succeeded to this degree makes me wonder how long we will remain a free country. A couple of prophetic quotes from Alex de Tocqueville (1805 - 1859) to consider: “The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.” ― Alexis de Tocqueville “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.” ― Alexis de Tocqueville “Americans are so enamored of equality, they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom.” ― Alexis de Tocqueville -
wdswtr, The shut off valve is a good idea. The bigger the engine and the more constant the throughput the less of a problem.

I have had lots and lots of problems with my Mercury 9.9 kicker trolling engine due to ethanol, even with the various additives (I have tried about all of them). I spoke to Mercury and they admit there is more of a problem on the smaller 4-stokes due to the smaller orifices in the carburetor. The smaller orifices are needed to satisfy new EPA rules on emissions. The smaller orifices result in finer atomization of the fuel and more complete combustion at the expense of greater liklihood of fouling. The best thing you can do on small outboards is to drain the bowl of the carburetor after each use or just disconnect the gas line and burn up whats left in the carb. You should do this even if you think your additive is effective. Advice from a marine engine mechanic with over 40 years of experience. If you leave gas with ethanol in the carburetor it will eventually leave behind the water and gunk caused by the ethanol. Even if you are using additives you will eventually get the problem if you don't get rid of the residual ethanol in the carb. I had a carb job done last winter only to have the carb get gunked up again before I even got to use use it and had to do another carburetor cleaning. By the way, Mercury recommends complete disassembly and cleaning all carburetor parts with an ultrasonic cleaner. For those interested harbor freight has one priced under $100.00. I now drain the bowl after each use. I am also in the process of switching to ethanol free gas, just filled up at the Nice and Easy in Brewerton. Its 91 octane but the engine owners manual says 87-92 is acceptable. I plan to start using this ethanol free gas for my Stihl chain saw as well.

Another dagger struck on the heart of Freedom. If you love bureaucracy, if you love ridiculous 2600 page long documents, if you like seeing 90% of your tax money used wasted and not going to what it is supposed to, if you like having government people making your important personal decisions, then you are happy. If you have little regard for freedom you are happy! Health care can be fixed, its costs reduced and the poor covered but only by getting the wasteful government out of the way and allowing allowing the private sector to work with minimal regulation where useful and relevent. If you thought TARP (it is estimated on 6 cents of every dollar provided the publicized relief) was a waste and a failure, stay tuned!!

Theres no turning back a Jack Russell on a mission. No way, no how. Amazing dogs!

Interesting story! Wasn't aware of this degree of agressiveness in hens with poults.

Thank you for this excllent article Grouse. I am a man of modest means and have worked all my life. I will never be rich yet I understand what a disaster it is to tax the tar out of those that have more as they will leave the country/state and will not be encouraged to use their resources for growth of their companies and concerns which helps everyone and keep us employed and adding value. Just look at how rapidly successful individuals and companies leave NY. Most small business owners I know are frustrated with the taxes and bureaucracy and many of them are either moving out, quitting or retiring early.

Seems there are many reasons why we hunt. Its pretty hard to single out which one is prezactly the main reason.

I agree with you Joe.
