  1. You guys are applying specifics that those stats aren't meant to address and arguing some really weird points. If someone drives their car off a bridge to kill themselves it is both a suicide and automobile death. That is, if you're measuring both. If you're just measuring cause of death, it's automobile. The same criteria that cars and trauma care are improving can be applied to guns. Gun deaths going down was oft touted by the gun lobby, but that just meant trauma care was improving. I find this suicide argument very strange. Based on the one chart, it looks like gun deaths and overdoses rose at the same time and in the same rate, so probably there were a good number of teen suicides in that time. So what? Are they somehow not real gun deaths? Do they not apply? I don't even know what that means. The sobering chart is the international one that the US leads the world in kid gun deaths whether that is suicide, homicide or accident. That's the one that should be concerning. The ad is silly. But the stats seem to show that guns are now the number one killer of kids. What we do with that as responsible gun owners is the question. I've said this before but if we don't figure this out, someone will figure it out for us and I don't think we'll like the solution. --- Just took another look at the ad. Aside from the last line, it's point is don't be afraid to ask if someone's guns are picked up before you let your kids play there. Hardly controversial but maybe necessary when you consider how many people keep their guns unlocked in easy reach. I was at someone's house a few years ago and we were in his shed tying flies. He had to go into the house but before he left he said, "By the way, there's a loaded gun in the cabinet over there." After he left, I opened the door and sure enough, a loaded handgun sat on a shelf. Why the hell he felt it necessary to announce that is beyond me. Why he kept a loaded gun in an unlocked drawer in an unlocked garden shed is just insane. I doubt he's alone.
  2. Silly ad but a quick search brings this up: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/nejmc2201761 https://www.kff.org/global-health-policy/issue-brief/child-and-teen-firearm-mortality-in-the-u-s-and-peer-countries/#:~:text=Firearms recently became the number, those caused by other injuries. https://www.npr.org/2022/04/22/1094364930/firearms-leading-cause-of-death-in-children
  3. There's a Hobart University? The things you learn here. It happens.
  4. My nephew is going into his second year of Uni. When he told me what it cost per year, I remarked that I didn't think he/it was worth it and suggested that he ask for half that in cash, invest, and study a trade. Hobart is the next town over from me, but I'm picking up that there may be another Hobart in NY. Mine's on the WB Delaware. If it is my Hobart, happy to take you fishing for a day or let you hunt my property.
  5. This guy walked into my camp at dinner time. No idea how to judge size. That round steel disk is 50' round - bear is about 6' beyond.
  6. What do you have to lose by slathering something on and trying?
  7. And yet only one side of that equation keeps bringing it up because as we all know, mermaids are white. That's not opinion ... that's science!!!

  9. It's a Remlin, but it seems they took a little more time and care with these deluxe versions. I was ready to but until I asked if I could see the stock. Oh well.
  10. Seller said that they were, so he couldn't show me the stock. Don't see them serving any other purpose and they look so badly done that they don't match the quality of the leather work.
  11. These are riveted in and the guy doesn't want to remove them to show the stock and damage. It's a pass from me.
  12. Didn't even think of that, but you're probably right. The weird thing is the guy paid extra for the upgraded wood.
  13. Looking at an older Marlin and came across a Deluxe Texan with upgraded wood. I asked if they could remove the leather sleeve so I could see the stock and he said not possible.
  14. First time I saw on the actual speedometer and not an app or nav screen. I also not very up on new car tech.
  15. At first it bugged the hell out of me as I like to drive fast. Then I just went with the flow and since everyone was doing the same speed, we moved very well down the road. I drive to the city yesterday and in massive traffic with assholes driving a few feet off my bumper and weaving in and out of traffic. To get nowhere. Socialism for the win!
  16. Generally speaking, all good ideas are usually ruined by a screaming dipshit.
  17. Hunting NY is a wealth of info. I just got back from Sweden and rented a Volvo. It had this feature on the speedometer that put a red line at the speed limit. It would change the instance you entered a new speed zone. If you went over, it flashed the speed limit at you. Pain in the ass, but Sweden has a zero tolerance for speeding. They can/will fine you for one km over the limit. They also have zero alcohol limit. Designated drivers are a big thing in Sweden. I got used to it. They're already tracking my phone.
