  1. Off of DEC website, it states it is ok to carry 22 pistol during deer season so as long as it is not used for deer. Since you will be carrying a slug gun with you, it is easy for you to prove that you had no intention of using the 22 on a deer. I'm not sure if this applies to 22 rifles though. From DEC's FAQ page: Q: Can I carry my .22 caliber rim-fire handgun with me while I'm big game hunting? A: Yes, but only during the regular deer season or early and regular bear seasons and only if you have a NYS pistol permit. You may not use the .22 caliber rim-fire as a primary or secondary weapon to take deer or bear. You may not possess a firearm of any description while bowhunting.
  2. No. It's on order. Rifle won't be in for a week or so. Deerthug, didn't know about the gift certificate rule but as written, it all comes down to who fills out the 4473 form.
  3. Update: I returned with my brother on Thursday and they said best they can do is refund him the money and pretend this never happened. They continue to state that it has to be the same person all the way through. I ended up buying the rifle from Davis Shooting Sports up in Goshen, NY. They charged me $60 more than Dicks for the same rifle but they're hassle free. I asked them out also if it's possible to pay for a firearm for someone else if it's a gift and they too said that it doesn't matter who pays, just that the person who will eventually own the gun is the one who registers it.
  4. Update: My brother isn't worst for wear but he feels bad for the guy who shot him because he has been fired. Fired in the military in a sense that this is a privilege position that you have to get accepted into. They beat out a ton of candidates for this position. Higher pay, gets to work in NYC (which in many cases for these soldiers means getting to work at home). The guy goes back to his normal military post and probably also demoted.
  5. Lee, I'm also an older (36) 2nd year hunter. Last year I didn't get my deer rifle until after the season was over so during deer season, I mainly hunted small game witha 12 gauge (#6 shot). The state land in my area, I was able to find empty spots after the 1st week of deer season. Especially in areas that have patches of shotgun only zones. As far as scaring deer away, well that's for you to decide. This year during bow season, I always carry a couple of blunt heads but I never used them because I too kept thinking the deer might be just around the corner and to me, a deer in the bush is worth two squirrels in hand. You have to decide what do you want. The squirrel in hand or a small chance a deer might be in sight. You wouldn't be using the same shotgun cartridge and choke for squirrels as you would for deer. For squirrel, use a modified or improved modified choke with #6 or #7 shot. Anything larger would destroy the meat.
  6. Shhh...Montreal steak seasoning has been the secret to my cooking.
  7. Thanks for the concern, Deerthug. My grandma is a tough old lady. We kept thinking it was her time for years now and she keeps fighting on. I think it is because of that we're better emotionally prepared for it. Not that it's easy but I think it would have been a lot harder if it was something unexpected and came out of nowhere. It's been one really tough week. Brother's shooting accident at work on Tuesday, Dick's Sporting Goods fiasco Tuesday night, and now this.
  8. So ask I speak of health, my grandmother suffered a stroke last night. She is in a coma state right now but she will squeeze her right hand when you talk to her. Her vitals has stabilized. If nothing changes then she has a good chance but she will be paralyzed on her left side after this. She lost her vision 4 years ago. Doctors also feel she can turn for the worst at any minute so they're going to keep her at ICU for the next week or so. She's 89.
  9. There's a bunch of stuff I would love to have but reading how others don't have a job or their health makes me grateful that I have both. Anything else I get is a bonus.
  10. Squirrels in the city/suburbs have adapted to life around people lack of predators. So much so they actually come towards you begging for food because neighbors around me feed them. Not the case in the woods where they're constantly being chased by coyotes and hawks. Go on sunrise and an hour or so before sunset. That's when they come out to feed. Then hide there and be super quiet. They heard you a mile away. Make them think you're gone and it's safe to come back out and eat.
  11. So I spoke with the store manager and they said that this isn't about NYPD policy but rather FBI policy (bull) and store policy (can't argue with that, they can do whatever they want) so he said what they will do is erase my involvement in the whole deal and my brother registers the rifle under his name. Once he takes it out of the store, he can do whatever he wants with it. Option 2 would to just get the refund.
  12. I'm thinking everyone is about to go home tonight and examine themeselves but they just won't admit it.
  13. Hahaha!! Well played, sir. Well played.
  14. Not to get all nerdy on everyone but biologist theorize that the bump on the back of our manhood is designed to scrape out the competitors seeds while we're busy dropping our own. I'll leave it at that. I am not about to examine a buck's tools.
  15. How often have you used your 308? With each gun I bought, I've always been all over the place but after a bunch of rounds through them, my groups have gotten tighter and tighter. I don't know if it is because I've gotten better or the guns have been broken in. I have read that some people believe gun do need some breaking in even if it's not a new gun because the gun could have been using a different ammo before and now has to break into this new ammo. Whether this is true or not, I don't know. I just know I'm shooting much better than I was shooting last year.
  16. This article sums it all up. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/30/nyregion/30critic.html With all the Bloomberg rules, store are so afraid nowadays they just figure it's not worth it to sell to civilians so they don't.
  17. Yeah, he hates the laminated wood. He's hoping in the future to change the stock on it. Hahaha...we kept saying we're not going to turn this into a Gunsite thread but I think we just performed a hostile take-over. Sorry.
  18. BTW. I just got off the phone with the Shotgun and Rifle division of the NYPD. I asked them if I wanted to buy a rifle as a gift for someone, how would I do so. I told them that we wouldn't be going together because it was going to be a surprise gift. If it would be an issue if I paid for the rifle in advance and he would be picking it up later? They said "Yeah, I don't see why not?" Since both of us a legal permit holders, it doesnt matter who pays for the rifle so as long as the person who will receive, possess, and own the rifle is the one who registers it. It would only be illegal if after I registered the firearm under my name, I hand the rifle to someone else which is probably what Dicks felt was happening.
  19. Don't want to take this Remington 700 trigger discussion into Ruger Gunsite discussion but I'll just say that his reasoning is the size (overall length), weight, and the most imporant factor looks. He hunts but he likes shooting more than hunting. He needed to get a "deer" gun because the current one he's been using is custom built Mk13 sniper rifle but using .308 instead of .300 win mag. 26" barrel. Thing weights a ton.
  20. When I was buying my rifle, I was initially going to get the Ruger Gunsite Scout as my deer gun and the Remington 700 VTR as my coyote gun. At the time, the Gunsite Scout was selling like hot cakes and every where I turned it was sold out. I ended up getting the 700 VTR as my deer gun because I have absolutely no patience when it comes to buying stuff and I then bought the Savage Model 12 as my coyote gun. As stated in my in my Dick's thread, he went there to get the Gunsite Scout and they didn't have it. He ended up ordering it through ImpactGuns.com for around $750. It should arrive at the FFL early next week. I'll let you know how it goes because you know I'm going to play with it.
  21. You beat me to the punch. Remington had to deal with all the claim that their Model 700's would inadvertently rifle on it's own. True or not, this prompted Remington to come up with the new X-Mark trigger and set the poundage higher. Even when reducing the poundage, you can only go so low. I think the lowest you can go is 3 lbs. My 700 was my first high-power rifle and I just figured that's the way it is. I then bought a Savage Model 12 that has a pound and a half pull. I haven't adjusted my trigger on the 700 yet because I figure I've been going to the range with the way it is now and don't want to tamper with it until after the season is over. Then I'll have it adjusted by a gunsmith.
  22. Thanks for the info on the straw purchase. Either way, as others have already stated. If I can't be the person to pick up the firearms, they shouldn't have took the money from my brother in the first place. My brother left specific notes that I would be the person picking up the rifle. It was I who got the call from Dicks being informed that my rifle had arrived. If that's the case then we were baited. The biggest issue here is that not a single person in the store knew what they were doing. They essentially left normal sales clerk that you would find at Sears or Target to handle firearm sales.
  23. Last week, my bro, Pete was at Dicks Sporting Goods in White Plains asking about the Ruger Gunsite Scout. While there, he also asked about the Henry Octagon Frontier for me. Result, they did not have the Gunsite but they had the Henry at another shop and can have it shipped over so Pete called me while I was at work and asked if I wanted them to send it and I did. Earlier today, I got a call from Dicks telling me that my rifle was in so, excited, I drove up there after work to pick it up. I got started on the paper work right away. The staff there wasn't exactly sure how to complete the forms so I actually had to show them how. Next, I wanted to buy some ammo with the rifle but they told me that they are not suppose to sell pistol ammo with the client showing a proper pistol license. The second staff said they he would sell it to me since I'm clearing buying it for a rifle but he's not 100% sure. A third staff (who appearred to be a senior staff eventhough she was younger than the other two by far) came and said that it might not be such a good idea. The three of them kept on discussing and that's when I said, you know what?-I can just buy the ammo some where else. They did the background check and everything check out fine. This is not assumed. The staff member was on the phone right in front of me giving my info to someone over the phone and then hung up and told me I am all clear. So as I went to pay, they told me it has already been paid for. What? I checked the paperwork and there it was...my brother basically bought me the rifle as a surprise gift. While walking out of the store, I asked for an official copy of the receipt because they won't accept photocopies when I have to register the rifle. The third staff overheard this and said I can't walk out of the store with that rifle. I asked why was this the case? They said while it is clear that I was not intentionally doing so, on paper, it looks as if he is buying the rifle and then illegally giving it to me or vise versus. I'm illegally picking up the gun for him. I told them that both he and I both have licenses to own firearms and the gun is being registered to me legally. I've been checked and cleared. She (my girlfriend called her "the fat heffer") said that the policy is that it has to be the same person from start to finish. That the fact that the payment came from my brother but the gun is being registered to me is what is causing this whole issue. I then said what if my brother came in and "returned" the gun for a refund and I went and "bought" it right afterwards. She said I can't do that because both he and I are now banned from purchasing firearms from ANY Dicks Sporting Goods store due to this incidence. The other two staff members came to my defense saying that I was trying to pay for the rifle and didn't even know it was already paid for until they told me. She said she would contact upper management and give me a call if things change but in any event, I cannot walk out of the store with the rifle today. I said fine, we'll come back to get our refund and clear our name. Honestly though...I just want to clear my name because I don't want any dark spots on me but if I can't buy another rifle at Dicks again, so be it because after this, I don't want to buy another rifle from Dicks ever again.
