  1. 5.56 NATO. I talked to him again after he got out of the hospital and he clarified. The shot actually hit him in the back, not the chest. He was training some guys to breach a room and the guy behind him accidentally let off a round. Shot hit the wall and bounced into his back. Physically, he only ended up with a bruise and now a stiff back. He took sniper rounds twice in Iraq and his vest saved him each time so mentally he seems unfazed.
  2. Did so to a goose. I was completely new to hunting then and didn't know about proper shot selection. I shot one with a #6 steel shot. It was flopping like crazy. Wasn't sure if it was dead and flopping or still alive and flopping. I tried to end it by decapitating it but it still kept on flopping for another minute even without it's head. It was a bit hard to take in and a real gut check.
  3. Just got a call from my brother a little while ago. He took a round to the chest. Fortunately he was wearing a vest. They were conducting a training session and one of the other soldier's gun went off accidentally. Round riccochet off of a wall and hit my bro in the chest. He got checked out by the medic and luckily the wall and vest stopped everything. Hearing this reminds me that we have to be extra careful when handling a dangerous weapon and remind those around you as well because if it isn't you, it could very well be the guy next to you.
  4. Eva or Joanna Krupa...tough decision! This is a family oriented forum. I best end it before it goes any further.
  5. The only good thing PETA has ever done was those "I rather go naked" ads. Ooh, Eva Mendes....
  6. Nevermind. This thread made me research a bit more on my issue and it turns out that it's part of Savage's 3 position safety feature. On locks the bolt, 1/2 on releases bolt but still can't fire, and then fully on to fire.
  7. I would have it checked out. What's the point of having a safety that only works when the gun is empty? I have a Savage Model 12 with a different problem. The bolt won't open with the safety on. I have to take the safety off to open the bolt. Afterwards, I can put the safety back on. Since the Model 12 is an internal box magazine, if I ever have an unspent round in the chamber and want to eject it, I have to take the safety off first. A minor issue which I never thought it was worth having it checked out but your issue is worth having it looked at.
  8. This just replaced the Shake Weight as the funniest product ever!
  9. Great job and nice story, Papabear! I got my niece to take her hunter's ed and bow classes. I was going to take her small game hunting this year but she messed up her SAT so I told her she has to study instead and re-take the test. Maybe during X-mas break, I'll bring her out a couple of times.
  10. #1. I don't know why but by default, my browser keeps setting me up with some super tiny font the last few times I posted. I have to manually adjust the font to something that is easier to read and I don't know what the normal font is suppose to be. #2 Congrats to all those with new places. I bought mines years ago but it's time for some changes so yeah, the misses and I agree to buy new sheets, curtains, etc as our gifts. #3 My idea of great gifts is something you want but feel it's over priced. If it's something you want and it's a great deal, you would have gotten it yourself. But if it's lets say a scarf that you really like but at $50 you're like "I'm not paying $50 for a freakin' scarf!" But if someone bought you that scarf all of a sudden it's a different story. #4 Growing up in a household that never really celebrated X-mas, I am a notoriously hard person to get gifts for because if there's anything I want and is obtainable, I go out and get it myself right away and I'm very particular about what I want. Like, it can't be any scope...it has to be that scope. So that last couple of years I would purposely refrain myself from buying a few items I want till after X-mas and then create a list. This year it's mainly camera gear and hunting/shooting accessories. Kept cost low because I know times are tough.
  11. Went to West Point for a late afternoon hunt today. Place was pretty much empty. I asked the check-in station if it's been like this all day and he told me that there were a few more hunters in the morning but they left already. (We checked in at 1PM) Went to our spot and realize why. Nothing but ticks. It was so warm, I ended up hunting in a t-shirt and my blaze orange vest over it. We climbed over the top of this mountain and went half way down the other side and decided to play with the electronic caller a bit with no true intentions of succeeding. But we just wanted to see if the caller really works. We set the caller 20 yards uphill from us and 30 yards south. First we tried Squirrel calls by a nest we saw squirrel hide in but no response. We then pulled the Doe Estrous call and then 20 minutes later we pulled the Fawn Distress call just for the heck of it. Nothing. So we went back to grab the caller, climbed another 10-20 yards back up the hill and over a ledge and we immediately saw two white butts running up the hill. We decided to follow them and caught a glimpse when we got back to the top but that was it. Never saw them again after that. The other hunters checking out at the end of the day also expressed the same frustration. They said at least we saw something. I still don't know if we've actually called those does in successfully or if it was by chance we bumped into them. if we did call them in, then I can't believe I we kept looking downhill and never looked behind us. PS: Antlerless deer is off limits after the 1st week at West Point.
  12. Sorry for your loss. I am notorious for the "it's getting better" response but I'm slowing starting to realize that I'm not 26 anymore.
  13. My bro wears the bracelet at all times. Steve, text me if you want to grab breakfast before hand. I'll be at the Cure concert tonight so it'll be a late night for me.
  14. I don't mind having to take a scaled down refresher course. The price of the licenses isn't much and the money goes towards maintaining state land so I have no problem with that. Reducing the revenue means reducing the quality of our state land. I think they should reduce the cost of out of state license fees. Maybe it's generate more income by getting more hunters. Several hundred dollars for an Elk tag in Montana? That's just ridiculous. My bro has a buddy who lives out in Montana but I can't afford to drop several hundred on an Elk and possibly not see a single one while I'm out there.
  15. If you're stuck in a survival situation, the strap unravels into a long rope which can be used in a number of ways to keep you alive. Probably not much use here where help isn't that far away but in the future, if I ever decide to hunt the wilderness of Montana or Alaska, it might be good to have. http://www.survivalstraps.com/
  16. No ETA on release date but it was introduced back in May 2011. Bolt action chambered in 5.56 NATO and accepts AR-15 detachable magazine! It’s a big long (24” barrel) for my taste and the stock is fugly. If they ever develop an after-market where I can put in a tactical stock and shorten the barrel to 20” then this fine product will be in my arsenal. http://www.mossberg.com/products/default.asp?id=46&section=products
  17. I saw this on Steve Rinella's facebook page. He has a rifle sling with a cushioned top but a survival paracord at the bottom. Anybody know the name of this sling? When I searched online for a rifle sling with survival paracords the only ones I saw were ones that are completely made out of paracord which I think would not be comfortable on the shoulders. I posted on Steve Rinella's facebook page asking about it but I doubt I'll get a rapid response.
  18. In my opinion, between the quarter-in and the quarter-away, I would think away would be the best shot. Visualize your own anatomy. If you go from up under your ribs out to your collar bone, nothing obstructs the path to your vitals. As oppose if you collar bone or right under your shoulder down, you are close to several large bones (shoulder blade, etc). Also, I would imagine that the front of the deer can take a little more than the rear because through evolution and them constantly fighting each other, the front is designed to take a couple of hits from a competing buck. Not to say a bullet won't go through it, just that it's more protected there than under the ribs.
  19. Zombie apocalypse is plausible but after reading all these pre-legal and post-legal shooting hour accidents, a dumb careless hunter do exist and they will shoot you. You may not see my blaze orange in the dark but you'll see the beam on my flashlight. PS: To those dumb careless hunters. Deers don't carry flashlights and my flesh doesn't taste as good. Don't shoot at the light.
  20. If you're going to try and make a clean ethical kill then you're aiming for the "boiler room" right behind the front legs. When you're trying to find those front legs and instead, you see arms holding a rifle, it should tell you that's not a deer! All these mis-ID accident occur because the a-holes are shooting at the general direction of a sound or blurred movement.
  21. Karp, let me know how that 220 works out for you. Thinking of getting it or the 212 next year.
  22. JJBat150: Thanks. That's pretty cool idea. I use a Mossberg 500. Will try it out next time I use tit.
  23. Wooly, You really had me there until you mentioned the $1000 bills. Took me a few minutes but then I realized....wait a minute! They don't make bills in $1000 denominations! Congrats!
