  1. Tucked into a blind with 3 days off to harvest my first deer...wish me luck.
  2. That yote looks like he's been eating pretty well.
  3. I had one routinely walk right by my ground blind while predator hunting. He'd go up the same nearby pine tree every night and then shuffle back down and waddle away. Cute little suckers when they're talking/squeaking away, but just in case I had my barrel aimed at him the whole time. lol There are fishers around so it will be inters
  4. Love it! Those tracks in the snow don't lie and I can pick up movement much easier. Besides, who doesn't like to wear snow camo!
  5. Love the Mechanix gloves. Great dexterity and I'll throw in a hand warmer or use them as a liner in a fleece glove if the temps drop. However, they became waterlogged while hunting in the wet snowfall today. What kind of waterproof gloves do you guys use for keeping the hands warm and dry in rain/snow?
  6. Yesterday, I heard double (or more) the shots (~18) from last year's opener and saw nothing. Today was completely different (probably due to the snow) with only 4 shots heard, but 3 of those came from two hunting partners that dropped 3 deer in the same spot!

    My big 9

    Beautiful buck harvest!
  8. No action from my stand, but my neighbor and his nephew just took 3 from one spot about 1/2 mile down! It was his nephew's first, an atypical 4 point. We just finished dragging and hanging so I'm going to eat a quick lunch and head back out.
  9. Heard approximately 18 shots in the vicinity. Apparently, all the cool guys are double-tapping does with a shotgun. No one in our group took a shot, but one guy jumped a couple. Then some yahoo opens up with target practice doing 10 rd mag dumps! Debating whether or not to go back out and work on my tan..
  10. No, I passed on the quiver and opted to bungee the stick stack onto the stand. You can easily McGuyver something for less than the $40 the quiver costs. I also have the option of leaving the stand in one spot so there will be times where the sticks only will be carried.
  11. I will be hunting the same area behind the house, but this time I am far more prepared. The cams revealed a hot spot for travel and I have a new stand set up to take advantage of it. Hopefully all the scouting and preparation pays off.
  12. So your guest disregards all parameters of the permission he was given, collects his deer on posted property where he had no business being and he is raising his voice to YOU?! That's a special kind of person right there. I am relatively new to hunting, but respecting another person's house rules would never be a question. It's too bad that this person ruined the chance for another guy who might truly benefit from a hunting experience with you.
  13. 5R looks just ok for Saturday (clear, chilly am, but high of 59 in pm), but 90% chance of rain on Sunday changing to snow at night. Next week looks promising though and fortunately I only work one day.
  14. I was actually making several mistakes. First, I wasn't setting the hooks for the cocking rope against the sides of the rail. Next, I was lifting up mostly with my arms, not standing up and then pulling back with my arms for those last few inches before the string sets. Finally, I was pulling the rope up quickly instead of using a slow draw upwards to ensure a smooth, center draw. Never used a crossbow before or had any kind of instruction so these were easy mistakes to make. Now I know better.
  15. After too much back and forth on what to get for this season, the final answer was a Tikka T3x in .308 shooting Hornady 150 gr American Whitetails.
  16. I grabbed a few different boxes of ammo to get the scope zeroed on Sunday. After getting dialed in using the Winchester Power Points, all of the ammo used grouped well at 1 MOA or less. The heavier Nosler 165's did group noticeably lower though. I've heard good things about the Hornady Whitetails delivering a knockout punch on impact. I'm going to sneak in one more quick range trip to fine tune things, but they will most likely be the Go-to choice on Saturday.
  17. Pulled cards today and noticed far more bucks showing up. No Beasts, but a number of 6's and one 8 that would all be good harvests for here. It's going to be a long week at work, but at least I know where I'll be sitting on Saturday.
  18. Holy smokes! Great hunt story and harvest. Congrats!
  19. Got the scope zeroed on my next range trip, no problem. I was definitely cocking the string back off-center at times and that caused me to chase some knuckle balls. Thanks to you guys, now I know better. Great scope, just like ApexerER recommended. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to take a deer with this setup.
  20. I can finally chime in here. On my first crossbow hunt.
  21. I'll second that. Putting your family first is always a good decision. The deer will still be there.
  22. I picked up a set of Lone Wolf climbing sticks and heard that Stealth Strips would significantly dampen any metal-to metal contact. Wow, you can chalk that up as an understatement! This micro-suede camo is as soft as stroking my Lab's ear. Total install time was about 10-15 minutes per stick and fairly simple. The strap buckles are beefy so I covered those with some bicycle inner tube. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this setup. Big-time difference versus leaving the naked metal exposed.
