6 of my 8 taps ran well today. One tree barely ran at all. We will see where I’m at in the morning. Expecting a lot tomorrow and Thursday. I have To go grab propane so I can Boil if I have Enough this weekend.
-
Not a lot of sap today, about a gallon, but the good news is all 8 taps are now dripping! temps next week look great, I may even be doing my first boil of the year.
-
Country max on W Henrietta rd has them. Not Ball brand though.
-
Just checked the tap I have In the split trunk and it’s dripping. Just took longer than the main trunk taps. was the wood light or dark colored in this holes when you tapped them? I’ve read that dark indicates a spot that may not work.
-
I usually Don’t tap the split trunks, just the main one. This year I tapped Into one on one tree by my deck because it was easy to get to. It hasn’t run yet at all. with 20 taps, you ought to end up with a ton of syrup. The Silver maples will run like crazy, but the sugar content is lower, so the sap to syrup ratio is higher. Let me know if you need help with anything. Also let me know how the plastic taps work for you, I went With stainless ones that I ordered From Amazon and they are great so far.
-
Yeah you have to get there slowly lol. That sounds like a real pain to clean up.
-
Ordered some new taps the other day, decided to go with tube taps this time. Tapped 2 more trees this evening after the taps and tubing came in. They are both decent size trees, so I put 2 taps in each with tubes going to 5 gal buckets. I still Have a couple more trees I may End up tapping but I want To see how these do first. Last time I did Syrup I just Used the 4 bucket taps and ended up with more syrup than I knew What do do with. This time I’m going to make as much as I can And then make maple candy as well. Should have plenty to give to friends and family as well.

Yesterday I put 3 more taps in, so now I’m at 2 taps in 2 trees, and one tree is starting to run today. Both of the trees are very large sugar maples, depending on how they do for the next week, I may pick up another 2 taps for a couple of other large sugar maples. Glad to have things finally start though.

I’m so sick and tired of this weather

As soon as my kids are done with school, we are out of here. TN and a couple of other states are in mind for where we are headed. All depends on how things look at that point. I’m at the point of the winter where I’m going stir crazy and have had enough of the snow and cold. I’m ready for spring. Yesterday we had the first bunch of Robins out in the yard. Hopefully that means there isn’t much of this crap left. -
I got my stuff out this year after a hiatus the last few years. I tapped One tree the other day and have been watching it. No sap yet. I’m thinking it should start in the next day or two with the temps fluctuating.
-
Absolutely it is. I’ve compared my entry level Vortex scopes to most other entry level scopes side by side and haven’t found any others that can match the quality of the glass and features available for the same price. I have A couple of higher end Vortex with Japanese glass and have compared those with a few others in the same price range, with similar results as the entry level.

Updates to my 6.5 Grendel
WNYBuckHunter replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Yes sir. I like it so far, can’t wait to do the final sight in and hunt with it. I wasnt Sure if I’d like the red reticule with my red spotlights, but when it’s on its brightest setting, it really is nice. -
I got Curious and looked at Sharks site. They have an auto emptying one. Nice.
-
I’ve had/used Roombas before. They work pretty well, but when you forget to clean them out, it can become a little bit of a pain, because they won’t run. The next one I will Get will be one with the auto emptying option. I think It’s the Roomba 7 that does that. I will have to look at the Shark ones though, I have A Shark vacuum and it’s by far the best regular vacuum I’ve ever had.
-
I have a bunch of Vortex scopes. My muzzleloader and 308 deer rifle currently have Crossfire II 3-9x40s on them. Both are Mildot reticles, as I’m not a fan of BDC reticles. They are great scopes, especially for the money. If you were to buy a more expensive scope, look at the Viper HS line from Vortex. You simply get more for your money with Vortex when you are comparing new scopes.

Winning the lottery wouldn’t have much of an effect on where I live as it would what amount of property , etc I bought there. I’m just waiting for my kids to both finish high school, and then NY will be a memory for me. Tennessee is most likely where I go unless the political and tax climate changes drastically there.

Updates to my 6.5 Grendel
WNYBuckHunter replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
It has a day and night mode. In day mode it’s basically regular a video scope. Accuracy has been great with it. It has different presets or profiles to allow you to switch between rifles with a QD mount. The resolution is good, but not the same as looking through a traditional scope, which is why I dont normally use it for daytime hunting, but you can if you want to. when I replace It, I’ll post on the site about it. -
Updates to my 6.5 Grendel
WNYBuckHunter replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Thanks guys. My night rig currently has an IR scope on it. Next upgrade to that one will be when I go thermal. I’m thinking before I switch that scope to thermal, my next change up will be to pick up a thermal spotter for scanning. -
