If they werent, then why would they be cutting staff left and right, closing offices, not replacing retirees and having ENCON officers who havent seen a pay raise in 7 years, etc etc? Yeah its a shame that those guys, that do a truly meaningful job have to take cuts like that in order for the state to hand out welfare checks and free medical care to lazy people and illegal immigrants.

Is it realistic to believe that there will be SO many crossbowers joining the ranks that they would save the DEC deficit? Puh-leeze. There was an article the other day saying that the DEC is sitting on $9 million in the Conservation fund.......2 years after they raised our license fees because the fund was "in the red." There is no immediate dire need that would require crossbows to solve....as if they COULD solve it, in the first place. I never said that. I asked a completely valid question. So without twisting it, or putting your meaning to it, how about you answer the question posed.

Yeah the Hydra-shoks are for defense purposes, I wouldnt use them for hunting.

Oh, and the term "true bowhunter" or "real bowhunter" is nothing more than elitist drivel that does nothing more than turn hunters against hunters. The way I see it is anyone that hunts with any type of archery equipment is an archery hunter and we should be sticking together and focusing our energy on the fight against our real enemies, and not each other.

A questionaire would be great, many of us have been saying that for quite some time. Im pretty confident you would be wrong about crossbows getting voted down though. There is video floating around here somewhere of one of the meetings the DEC had before the vote on crossbows, and it was referred to about the number of emails, calls and letters they received that were pro-crossbow outnumbered the anti letters by a strong majority.

Doc, that is pretty much what they do now, youre right. Think about how many guys report their deer, but process themselves. How do they know the age of those deer? Maybe along with the mandatory reporting of all tags (kill or no kill), they should add on that all reported kills require you to turn in the jaw bone with the tag. Then they could age them all. Biggest problem with that would be overhead though.

Do you guys think it would be feasible to take a deer, at short range, with a 40 cal handgun? Ive been tossing the idea around of carrying my XD40 with me during regular gun season in the hopes that I can get a deer to within less than 25 yards, but Im a little unsure about how effective that round would be. What type of bullet would you use? I normally have lots of regular FMJ around for target shooting, and Hydra-shok for carry purposes, but what would I use for hunting?
