  1. As others have said you should practice and then based on your practice, hunt at ranges that you feel comfortable and confident with. I have a Carbon Express Advantax which shoots around 315 fps. I've practiced out to 60 yds and have split arrows at 50 yds. Based on this, if all the other variables made sense, I'd feel good taking a high probability shot out to 50 if one presented itself.
  2. I might be opening a can of worms with this, but I'm ignorant on the issue? I'm up in Rochester. Around here, there aren't a lot of options when it comes to buying firearms outside of either dick's or F&S. Don't get me wrong, I go local where i can. But in this case they're convenient, and the prices work. . I know that I can go in, ask questions and get a reasonably knowledgeable answer, and shop for any outdoor gear that I need. I've never had an item that I've either wanted or needed that they haven't had. Don't crucify me, but why are they bad? Just read jmark's comment. Is there a thing downstate where you can't buy certain firearms? I know that up here I could get any rifle or shotgun i wanted (even AR platforms) in the store. And if it's not in stock, i can order it. So maybe there is an upstate / downstate divide in how the stores handle firearms?
  3. Update: I have a guy watching the property for me. In exchange for him keeping an eye out, I give him permission to hunt on it with his son. He knows about the trespasser problems down there and has been my eyes and ears when I can't be there. He calls me a little while ago and says they see a person hunting and confronted him. The guy tells them "yeah, I know it's posted. So what?" My contact backs out and relays this to me. They drive around but there is no sign of a car on any of the bordering roads. I call the DEC and they send a CO out. They asked if I wanted him arrested. I said no, not the first time. Just get his information and let him know that he isn't permitted to be there. They walk into the area where the guy was but were unable to locate the guy. All of this happens in the spot I was planning to hunt Sunday. This is getting old fast..
  4. No bands that I could see.. but couldn't stay long looking for one. The office girls walk nearby and get weird when I start calling to them..
  5. Live from the office parking lot! If only I could convince the security guys to look the other way....
  6. That's interesting. Looks similar to a brindle coat on a dog. If it were me, I'd let it walk hoping it gets bred and passes the gene on. You might get a whole heard of brindle deer similar to the herd of white deer over near Sampson...
  7. I can't seem to pass on a good deal.. I call myself a bargain shopper but the wife calls me compulsive. I keep an eye out for sales and on CL for good deals. Here's a rundown of what I can remember that I've purchased this year: New scoped Traditions Vortek ML (MSRP $450ish, I got it on clearance for $175); sabots, powder, caps, sling, cleaning stuff for ML ($75ish) Diamond Edge Bow ($100); site, biscuit, stabilizer for bow ($45 total); 3 boxes of Arrows (MSRP $75ish/box marked down to $5/box); 2 ladder stands, 2 hang on stands, 2 sets of climbing sticks (Originally $500ish, bought on either clearance ofr CL for $260 total); Waterfowl parka ($90ish on sale for $10); 8 Goose decoys ($50 on CL); Cold winter jacket for late deer season ($90 on sale for $20); tags ($75). So I've spent roughly $860 on $2500 worth of stuff this year. Then tack on anything I spend on bullets, gas, snacks while in the woods, etc...
  8. I tend to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. My wife calls me the eternal optimist. I would like to think that there was some legitimate explanation for this. To your point he may have shot off the property and tracked it in. All sides of the property are clearly posted with a name and number on the signs. The pic was taken within 5 yards of one of my stands, and is 300+ yds from any property line. If he did shoot off property and trail it in, I would have been happy to give him permission to track it. Hell I would've helped him if i was in the area. All he needed to do is give me a call to let me know what's going on. But, since he didn't, all i have are a few pictures and a bunch of frustrating assumptions.
  9. Bear (bare?) With me guys.. first rant of the season.. pulled cards today and checked them when I got home. The property I hunt is private and posted. I got a pic of a trespasser along with the 4pt that he wounded. When will people learn that posted means stay out? Ok rant over for now. Thanks for listening.
  10. This morning my wife gave me some lovin.. think that might've used up all my luck for today... Only thing I saw in the woods was that Doe I bumped in the way in. A few small scrapes and no new rubs..
  11. Took my time walking in. Had a staring contest with a doe at about 40 yds halfway to the stand. She had me pegged before I could set up. Good to see one though. Now I sit and wait...
  12. Heading out for the 4th sit. Have yet to see a deer in range. 43 and a steady cold mist/drizzle in 8g with minimal wind. I'm going to hang an estrus drip and see what happens. Good luck on that recovery Paul. I hope you get him.
  13. Here's the one I mentioned earlier. I hope that someday I am lucky enough to harvest a brute like this.. or the one in the trail cam pic that Steve posted..
  14. My buddy just sent me a pic of a monster 8pt that his neighbor shot this past weekend in a river bottom near bristol. I've never seen a deer this big in person. A season can change in an instant.
  15. $1,600,000,000.00 here I come!!! Good luck to anyone playing.. oh, and good luck in the woods to..
  16. Phade that's a brute! I hope you get an opportunity to introduce him to your arrow real soon.
  17. I give you a lot of credit tf. I know I wouldn't have the patience that you do waiting too make that first bow kill so memorable.
  18. Where abouts are you looking? I know dec stocks a bunch of WMAs around the state. I think I'm headed out Sunday morning up around Braddocks Bay in Monroe county. Family stuff forces be to miss Saturday, which I don't mind because I'll miss the craziness.
  19. Man this morning feels good. Someone is gonna connect today. My money is on TF. Good luck everyone who is out!
  20. Windows open? You planning on stuffing it in the back seat?!
  21. These are all good. I forgot about the hostess pies! For me it depends on how long I'm in the stand. Water or coffee for sure. Then anything from jerky to Clif bars to peanut butter, banana and raisin sandwiches to smoked turkey legs!
  22. It's on my calendar but I'm not sure if I'm going it yet. The past few pheasant openers have left a bad taste in my mouth. The stocked areas are over crowded. I've literally seen guys yelling at each other and almost coming to blows because they wanted to push the same pieces of the property. I'd rather wait for Sunday, but by then most of the birds are gone...
  23. Made that mistake before. I used cedar blocks. The problem was that cedar isn't naturally occurring where I hunt, and the deer were on to me. I ate tag soup that year...
