That's a sincerely appreciated offer!

Good point. I guess I'll have practice with one in.. hope I don't choke!

Just looked at their site. Seems like it could be a legitimate option.

It only takes a few to ruin it for everyone else. A few years ago I made the drive out and found out that they were closed for the day because they had utility workers in the back working on something. Ended up wasting half the day on the drive. It would be great if the DEC offered a way to check on these.
-
Does anyone know if the shooting ranges are still open? I'm hearing that the DEC might have closed them because people were leaving all their trash behind. It's over an hour away from me though so not convenient for me to check on it. This is where I do all my sighting in before the start of gun season.

That's awesome! Congrats on a great bull!

I have a checklist that i use. If it weren't for that, i know I'd forget something. I just have it typed up and can print it out at the start of each season. I'm pretty much set once I've been out once or twice. Clothes haven been hanging out on the monkey bars for a few days now. Getting a good soak today by the looks of it. I'll throw those in a tupperware tote once they dry out with some oak and pine branches. Aside from that I should be in pretty good shape. Oh, and I just stocked up on these...

Nope. Next building over.

Seems like we could use an academy of our own for guys in Western ny..

You can literally see my office in that window pic of the elk!

I've tried a few ways that didn't work out the best. The meat had a strong flavor or would become real tough. This one is gold though. I combined a goose recipe I found on the BBQ Pit Boys site with another recipe I found in field and stream. It's so good that I'll usually make 2 loaves at a time (meat from 1 bird) and share.

I haven't had time to get out this year but I hope I get a chance. I have a stuffed bread that I make with it that's tasty. Here's more or less the recipe: take 1 breast. Cut it in half length wise. Pounds them out to tenderize them. Soak them overnight in simple salt water brine. Take them out and rinse. Fork them to further tenderize then soak for another night in a marinade. I use a soy ginger teriyaki one that I make. The next day I take them out and grill them. Only about 2 minutes per side over high heat. Take a loaf of Italian bread. Slice it half. Scoop out the bottom. Fry up some bacon. Remove it from the pan and saute mushrooms and onions in the bacon fat. Add garlic toward the end. Layer the bacon, then veggies in the bottom of the loaf. Layer of provalone. Slice the goose breast and Adda thick layer. More provalone. Add the top of the bread. Wrap the whole thing in foil and Toss in the oven on 375 for 20 minutes or so.

I'm showing a 20 degree drop in temps from 10/2-10/3.. I'm itching to get out there and this front should have them on their feet.

What are your expectations for the season?
Bolt action replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Deer Hunting
Not really sure what the expectations are for this year. I took 2 in the 2017 season, but ate my tags last year. I'd like to get out in the woods more this year. I know the deer are there, and the more time I put in the better my chances should be. I hope to have a quality shot opportunity at any decent deer with my bow. That would be a first for me! I'd love to take one of the studs I have on camera, but don't know if I TF's patience. I like to think that I'd pass on smaller deer early on if given the chance, but the longer the season goes on the less picky I'll be. I expect to be cold, I expect to have fun and to enjoy the woods, I expect to share in my excitement with friends and family regardless of there being a deer on the ground. -
Rain for the opener.. right on schedule.

Feeling pretty good about ranges. Next time I go i need to remember to hold for at least a 30 count before releasing... I've never taken a deer with a bow and want to do as much as I can to prep. Between the practice, there cooler weather, and what I'm seeing on camera, in getting excited about what's in store for us over the next few weeks

2 inch groups at 15, 25, 35 yards. Feeling pretty good about this bow business.

Great story. Congrats!

As some others have said, I think concealment and being smart about the wind are more important than the camo patterns. I have a 3D leafy poncho thing that my wife got me a few years back. Never wear it though. It looks cool enough but isn't really conducive to use with a bow or in a tree. Would probably work well from the ground during gun, but I try to not be on the ground during gun if I can help it.

I'm in the same boat. The fields are on a corn and soybean rotation. Oaks on the perimeter and apple orchard on the neighbors property. Haven't been down in a few weeks, but I'm hoping that they stay green for at least the first few days.

Same stuff is happening in my neck of the woods. Had a card pull on the 8/24 that showed lots of activity. Probably 800 pictures of actual animals (as opposed to wind blowing branches around) from the prior 2 weeks. When I pulled on 9/7 though I had very little deer activity. Mostly turkeys racoons does and fawns. Just a handful of bucks. I've been reading up on this baiting thread and think I might give it a shot!

I've been using the Wildgame Innovations cams for a few years now. I don't recall the models at the moment but they're the ones that are always on sale at Dicks. I can usually find the cam by itself for about $40, or packaged with batteries and a memory card for $50. Pic quality is good enough to see what I have moving around on the property. They take 8 AA's which seem to last about a year. The only concern I have is that the trigger speed (.75 - 1 sec.) seems to miss some movement. Aside from that, they are perfect for what I need them for.

Gotta love paper cores in the fire

What's the current Mark down percent? When the one in Rochester went down, it seemed like the inventory was restocked and the discounts were not enticing. Their retail prices tend to be a bit high, and so 20% of wasn't anything to get excited about. Then it went to something like 80% and the store was cleaned out. There are deals to be had, but you have to time it right...

So what do you like to use to clean the bore of your shotgun ?
Bolt action replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
I run a bore snake through it a few times followed by rem oil. Same practice for all my guns except the ml.
