Yep turkeys do no put up with daily disturbance.. will move to quieter area..
-
I would go and sit on edge where you last saw them and just listen, or go in am and just listen
-
A turkeys eyes are equvilent to 10x binos.. so pretty damn far...

The birds have plenty of area to roost on the edge of the fields, I've seen birds go 800 yards in 10 minutes near last light to get to their roost area. Me personally would go to where you last say them at 1st light and listen or if morning not possible get in that area in full camo and sit till dark looking and listening, be prepared to walk out in dark (no flashlight or colored lens light) I have had bird fly up and roost 30 yards from me while doing that and had to wait 30 min for full dark and then walk 200 yards with out light quietly so I wouldn't spook them. Went back 2 days later for opening day and it was a real easy quick hunt as birds roster 50 yards from where they were 2 days earlier.

Buckwheat if planted early.will be picked by july, and if planted in July is ready for picking in september, like it was said he prolly replant a winter wheat, rye, oats after harvest...

A bird can move quite a ways in a short time,if you can go to spot you saw him last in am and hoot or just listen, chasing him at evening will just move him further a few days doing the same obs er Ving in evening and listening in am should get you pretty good idea of his location
-
Hope he gets to harvest some buckwheat ,deer and turkey love it
-
Thanks! Many great hunts with no harvest ,especially turkey hunting, by far much more challenging than deer in my opinion. ...

I feel you pain..

Left jets off...lol

Well got up early and sat in hot tub on deck watched the sun come up and heard a few birds welcoming the sun, 2 sounded off from a known roost area to the south of me and 1 to the north, again a known area, the last on I heard was across the street not a typical traditional roost area, and is only the 3rd time in 4 years I have heard one roost there, I have been doing a lot of timber/habitat management on that side last 4 years and if it continues to roost and gobble from there it adds a new place to get after them early.... guess the management is starting to pay off.. oh and the view isn't to bad either!

Looking for locals... Oneida county. And "asking permission"
G-Man replied to zeus1gdsm's topic in General Hunting
August is kind of late as they think you have been watching a big buck in their fields, remember most farmers hunt, asking earlier in the year let's you stop in and lend a hand, or just chat and or scout, although you'll be a master.scouted if you can tell a farmer something about the deer on his property he doesn't know,he lives and sees them 24/7. Another advantage tons king early and getting to know your host better is he/she may have friends that once he is comfortable with you may pass on your name or introduce you to more landowners they know. -

Now may not be the best time many farmers are working on equipment and getting ready to plant.. if you see one working on equipment unless your a mechanic and going to lend a hand you may be more of a pain to them as they are trying to earn a living and don't have time to chat with you. End of may early June is good as long as crops are in, July is hay season and be preared to jump in and help if your gonna talk. That being said if this is only time you have ask but be respectful of what they are doing. -
There was talk about it a decade ago, we don't have enough public habitat suitable for them if I remember correctly.maybe if the state would cut some trees in state parks it would be possible..

Possibly froze out.??

A few years ago my brother was having a tough time getting a bird, so I took him to my favorite spot and set up 25 yards behind him. The turkey was gobbling just to his left 50 yards from.me and 25 from me. I could see the limb shaking as he strutted back and forth and gobbled from it. I figured my brother had to see the bird... soon enough a hen showed up from my right and walked toward the tom in the tree.I though perfect the tom will see the hen and pitch down in my brothers lap. the hen walked right behind my brother and proceed to pick ants off the tree he was sitting against, my brother sat like a stone. This went on for a few minutes till the hen moved around and in front of him. at that point a Jake appeared to my right and proceed to walk directly to my brother stepping over his boots to get to the hen,the tom in the tree was still gobbling his head off and my brother still hasn't moved, there is no way he could be sleeping with a tom screaming In his ear 25 yards away. the hen and Jake moved off to my left 50 yards or so and when 70 or 80 yards from.me and 50 from my brother the big tom pitched out of the tree and landed with the group and walked away.. my brother gets up comes over to me and says that tom had 3 beards! We watched him for over an hour in the tree and saw him walk away, I asked my brother if he wanted to try and get ahead of them as they were headed to an oak flat to feed, he said nope that was the best hunt he had in a long time and he was done for the day... it really was a great hunt how many of you can say you had a triple.bearded tom at 25 yards a hen in your lap and a Jake all in one sit?

You can plant but recommend a mixed.planting as they are easily killed by spotty mildew.
-
Looks like a body encased spider they are popular but expensive ,I would expect good performance out of it

It opens when it does so most breeding is done. And closes for same reason. Protection of Tom's though gregarious is important for hens all to get bred. If it opens earlier like mid April breeding would be extended into Jun and July and most pouts would not be developed enough to survive a early winter...

Yes that is the best practice Esp in high deer population areas, but if they were sold a fire wood guy could be there all turkey season ... that is what I would worry about, leaving them makes great.bedding and nesting cover. Just turkeys in general do not like pressure every day and will vacate the area, found that out when a neighbor walked her dog every day thru the wood down the ridge all april, we came to an understanding of no dog walking april and may and Sept to dec. She always had it leashed and is a good neighbor a non hunter with a postage stamp lot I go around, just couldn't figure where the turkeys went after using that ridge for roosting for 20 years.... saw her one day and she said she saw them every am but they always flew away and then just dissappeared... really ya think?

It's good spring is late as its much easier to hear with no leaves, even tiny ones absorb sound, but it makes it harder to move in close for lack of cover, most birds I've seen are all still flocked up 3 or for adults 4 Jakes or so and hens and Jenny all together, a few warm sunny days and they will really break up...
-
Turkeys will move to the edge of old roosting areas until it grows up to brushy. Deer will love it, I hope the roads m must still.be regraded as part of the logging contract, I'd contact you land owner and see what it entails , tops may or.may not of been sold for firewood. Nothing worse for turkey than disturbing them every day.

I'd get one to go back and forth to work 68 miles 1 way...

I agree, I was just making a point how easier a scope is to shoot than iron sights, I wouldn't take anything away if it allows some one to continue hunting, one of the reasons I support crossbows. But many hunters have never used iron sights, same as many original archers started traditional or compound with fingers as releases were not legal, one appreciation for the old ways is lost on many new hunters. Iron sights will fade as traditional archery will.. shame really I make all my nephews use iron sights on 22 rifles for.years befo re they ca n get a scope on a rifle for hunting
