I am.amazed at the number of.people who can't or don't know how to shoot with iron sights or even a peep. All military guns I have seen have iron sites there is a reason for them, but you need to practice with them to be consistant. Kind of like a bow, but just like a crossbow everyone wants easier so scope it is bore sighted for you..and all dialed in reday to go at normal ranges with little or no practice. wouldn't be a blast if we took scopes out of gun season and went to iron sights only? and watch the people cry like they do about crossbow being in archery because you don't have to practice?

Ny is blue already that the problem of th e electoral college , how an intelligent person could vote for her astounds me.. -
They are valuable fur bearers and the season closes when they. Are having pups. Same as squirrels and many other animals. The state looks as them as a resource. As for year round open season, I think in areas it's needed or should be extended to control numbers, the eastern coyote is different as it hunts in packs vs the westers lone hunter.. perhaps from part wolf gene idk.. but do they take game absolutely, same as fisher, Bobcat, and raptors.. most mammal carnivores now have seasons, but raptors do not, although their numbers have rebounded since ddt has been banned, hawks take more pouts and phesant around me than hunters do. But no one talks about them. I've seen many turkeys with just the heads eaten off by owls. Again they are protected, I guess we have to share our game with everything, same as my hard earned dollars....

A number of years ago neighbor and I found a den on the line has 8 or 10 turkey carcasses laying around it.. the den is no longer there....

A lot has to do with how animal is killed, dropping animal in its tracks doesn't let it bleed out.

I started hunting and the kill was the most important thing,my family ate the meat and it seemed to be a right of passage in my family. Now 30 years into hunting, my enjoyment come form scouting and putting friends and family in the right spot,I get as much and truthfully more satisfaction when a spot I prepared produces for someone ,than when I shoot some thing myself. The kill now is anti clamatic .although I still take multiple deer I do so to provide meat for my friends and family(those nephews eat my brother out of house and home) Older deer and harder/ new methods of taking them are my personal challenge now.

I'm sure they weighed it the best they could when the average weight of the bears they encounter is much lower..

Prolly a coyote ripping off lower jar as its easy to grab to expose the neck

I agree most.times a bird will sound off naturally, and I've used every kind of located call there is including elk bugle and a horn of an 82 Honda moped, after.years of use I've found roost areas used year after year and rarely use them now as the birds are there whether vocal or not..... experiance and familiarity with ones hunting ground has its benifit, if I were to go into new area a owl hooter, elk bugle and dog whistle would be what I took with me.

So do you think NYS will expand the crossbow season
G-Man replied to MACHINIST's topic in CrossBow Hunting
Shotgun slugs if foster type ae .69 caliber that's a big hole, most muzzleloader are .50 cal. If a shot gun 12 GA is using a Sabot the slug is 50 cal, if a muzzloader is shooting Sabot it's .44 or .45 almost all muzzleloader shooter I know are now using in lines so a smaller hole would be expected. If the dec checked a carcass and found a 69 cal hole I'm sure he/she would ask to see the gun used.... -
Try a silent dog whistle, it shocks them to gobble and it's not used to much by others

So do you think NYS will expand the crossbow season
G-Man replied to MACHINIST's topic in CrossBow Hunting
A stick and a string are are just that no mater what form energy is stored mechanically. So one season. For them, guns are chemically powered so one for them.. I know we have a muzzloader season but I hear multiple shot muzzloader in that season quite a bit so not really sure it's a valid season anyway -
Plant rye oats buckwheat and clover the bids will bug in and feed on seeds and clover in it.

game ownwrship..it's starting to change..good or bad.
G-Man replied to G-Man's topic in General Hunting
Perhaps if you look at the poached animal.as evidence, after the trial, said evidence is returned to owner.. if posted land would that not be the landowner, same as a shot animal.crossing on to it? If not perhaps recovery laws should be changed...that will tick alot of non hunters off.... it is a slippery slope... -
The best husband wife relationship I have seen is a friend's father, he goes hunting (out to camp) Oct 1 and returns end of season in dec. He goes home on Thursdays to do his laundry, though him and his wife take everyday she let's him go as long as she can go on her shopping trip with her friends for a week to some mall somewhere (every year it changes) almost makes me jelous of his relationship. Work for them for almost 50 years now

that's why I think restitution in $ should be given to landowner on top of any fines paid to the state. As fines are pitiful small another fine paid to land owner for trespassing and damage. Let the animal parts belong to the state, -
http://www.realtree.com/brow-tines-and-backstrap/who-owns-that-deer Not sure I like this but I think some monetary restitution should be made to landowner for trespassing and damages on top of fine from states.

Forget college, 1st year on railroad 60 to 80,000. With benifits.... cost for job, high school diploma... like Mike Rowe says you don't need college trades school and other jobs are available.

I'm a quick hunter I take a few weeks to hunt in may (and plow and plant) so I'm up early but back.in by 830 or 9 am. It's kind of a joke among my friends but turkeys spook easy so the theory is go out roster night before get up early pick which way birds will fly down get I n close and soft call and wait. Some time s it's quick and bird in hand by 610am and back in for nap . sometimes birds go other way. I just think chasing them around and education them is not wise as they will roost in same area again if not spooked. And tomorrow is other day. I understand the stay after them till noon hunters who have limited time, it just isn't for me to much else to do...can't waste the hours running around after them ,have work to do...lol

Better hunting near Cortland. ...

Lots of birds out and strutting for their hens along the tracks between buffalo and cleveland ohio. Surprised how many made it thru a long cold winter.
-
Hit a bear with the train last fall, thought someone picked it up but I see it in the woods just north of the tracks, if anyone want to go pick up the skull, claws it's in Westfield ny, north of track around mile marker 55. Not sure if dec has to be notified that's up to you.

Unless your average shot is over 75 yards saboteur are of no advantage and actually though accurate do not operatefficiently at closer ranges, fact is almost all shots in nys average under 70 yards so no need to upgrade to a more expensive barrel and slugs to kill und er 75 yards, I'm not saying longer ranges aren't possible but why spend more. Sabot are usually in 3 in shells resulting in more recoil for the shooter, the question was geared for a youth,(new hunter) why punish their shoulder when it's unnessary to do so at average expected ranges. For a more experiance and larger framed shooter go ahead shoot 3 in and spend themoney on the rifled barrel if that is what makes you confident.
