ESSAY: Unfollowing Hunting Social Media will make Hunting Better
G-Man replied to left field's topic in General Hunting
I'd like to agree with you but having a few older yet new hunters show up with all kinds of scents / lures and them asking what they should use tells me otherwise. The look on their face when I said none just go and sit was priceless , but they were successful. I'd rather try to teach someone to hunt before they jump into calls/ lures.. but tv and media pushes them .. since then they haven't used them or urged me to use or try them .. -
Good luck hope she enjoys it!!

3in of snow is not enough to ride on unless ground Is rock hard. Mud wears out skags, and rollers , sliders ect , quickly.. want to ride like that go grass drag all summer.. 12in snow unfroze ground and 4 in with froze is good rule of thumb.. Heck we had 5 ft of snow and 5 days later it was gone showing grass everywhere.. long gone are days of months of trail riding , get a trailer and head north..

ESSAY: Unfollowing Hunting Social Media will make Hunting Better

This is absolutely true imo, and it is seen on this site and many others , the latest lure, call, ect then add in food plots ect . To many hunters see something on tv and think it's magic and use it buy it , happens with guns as well , watched nwtf founder push 20ga shotguns for tirkeyvon TV show and on YouTube and magazine , every gin at banquet that year was a 20 ga.. Now it's the 6.5 Creedmoor ( basically a .264 mag) been around for decades was considered a wild cat , now it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, yet I now see many post about tracking deer wounded from one , ( the gun will almost always outshoot the shooter) neighbor was looking into one , asked him what his average shot was .. under 70 yards so why are you buying a gun for shooting long range? He ended up with a 45 70 and had killed several animals with it.. pressure from social media and shows simply was pushing his decision . Enter crossbow.. nys regs allow many x Bow that are lethal at reasonable ranges but media is pushing narrow high poundage bows.. so we need to allow this 3k crossbow .. smh.. Long gone are articles that magazines published that let you compare , learn about methods or equipment . now they are all get this watch me use it in this monster, get one and you can kill monsters as well... Imo this is worse thing to happen to hunting in my life time -
So counties cant opt out, to bad for snowmobiling... not like we will have conditions to open trails anyway https://www.dec.ny.gov/press/123795.html

Been a strange season , passed many deer during Boe, had opportunities at 3 good buck bow, took my buck opening Tuesday as I know I'd have limited time for gun,, been watching herd of doe in front of house last 2 weeks ,have had only one guy hunt last two weekends. ( had no one Friday after thanksgiving at all) yet camp has done well 9 buck and 3 doe so far. Lot of guys tagged out as no doe tags available this year. I did take a walk for a friend sat afternoon and pushed a nice 8 in front of her but she was unable to get the shot... onto the last weekend maybe some hunters will show up.. if not then will be muzzleloader deer drive weekend when guys will have tags to use and neighbors all join in.. can't say worse ever season but definitely a strange one

A shorter gun season would force more hunters in the woods at that time creating more movement. Or alternatively run a 10 day season clse for 2 weeks and run another 10 day season this would allow deer to return to natural movements and actually increase the take numbers as almost 70 % is killed 1st 2 days.. now you would have 2 opening days.. as for the long bow season less than 20% of bow hunters are successful. They tend not to shoot doe ( thus the reason xbows were introduced) when xbows are allowed all of archery then I could see a case to restrict season legnth.. We are here and have a season to manage herd ( reduce numbers yet many will not shoot doe.

It's not specific it's crossbow and bow as well

Well a modern 45 -70 rifle has a range of 250 to 300 yards since most use sabots 45 or 44 cal amd now 100 yards of powder vs the 70grain in the metallic cartridge (that's what 45 70 stands for 45 cal bullet 70 grain of powder).... the range is easily 300 yards. I have a friend that shoot 150 grain and his bullet is same velocity as a 30 06.. so his range is closer to 500 yards...

Old fashioned sidel lock guns are just as accurate as today's in line. When started with muzzleloader the problem wS wet snow getting into pan or under cap. But we don't get snow like we use to, although the snowmobile clubs think we do.. many years we are luck to have a dusting for season now. Like all ny seasons hunters complain till they get it easier ,scopes inclines, or crossbows, or releases and lighted pins shoot with what makes tou hPpy.happy.. at one point I was using a flint lock pistol to kill deer as everything se had gotten simple...

Grading according to whom?? Hunter satisfaction varies wildly , while you want it to be a certain way most others do not, Solution is buy / lease your own place and mange it thru nys licence and tags. The ariticals I see rating ny as bad deer hunting usually all complain about snow and weather.. yet talk to new York hu ter and they all want snow and cold... so who's correct ? Some writer that doenst like cold so hunting sucks , or the residents that enjoy long liberal season and fill their freezer.. While many pass up younger bucks some will kill 1st one they see. This is fine as all age class of deer should be taken in a management plan. Including fawn!

Voluntarily passing is fine , don't need mandatory ar, and this is only part of what should be herd management, aggressive taking of does is a must. Seems proponents of qdm forget the rest of the herd and just do buck management, it's why 90 % of people are against qdm.. and in fact they had to combine and change their group name to present a new image. As I said I prefer total deer management. That means habitat, all age class of deer harvested. There is no emphasis on buck. As qdm appears to have become turning many off to the entire program.

Ny buck taken older than 2 is now 62% without ar

A shortend season would perhaps lose hunters but you would have a increase of hunters per hour. When opening day was a Monday many took off the entire week resulting in more hunters innbthe woods as any given hour, a 10 to 14 day season would result in the same. The way it is now weekend hunting is extremely common. But loot at successful hunter and they hunt during the week. A shorter season or multiple short seasons would result in more deer taken with time for herd to return to normal patterns. as for qdm i dont like it in its form ,its become twisted to trophy management. Total deer management would be better . Focusing on herd health, you cannot stock pile big bucks this is well known. So shoot what the property offers as top deer and forget score/ age.

Get off the fields and get In trails to filed 100 yards or so and you'll see deer in shooting light.. you will be more effective if you give up sight hunting as a visual hunter and use your ears to hear something coming in thick cover and when you see it it's in range already. Makes a huge difference in successful hunts
-
600 k hunters and 150k deer taken, you prove the point 10% take 90 % of game.. have more deer around doenst.make one a better hunter. And you can't stock pile big bucks , I know my neighbors benefit from my efforts every year.
-
Hard to age anything over 3.5 imo he's mature and should be a target animal.
-
One buck is not an issue 80 % of hunters don't even get a deer , bowhunter fought hard for that buck tag . Want more buck to make it thru , cut the rut out of deer season.. it will always be 90% of game taken by 10% of hunters.

Point is all are effective at killing its the wielder that makes them efficient or not.
-
Drives are very safe 1 person is in charge, standers go to assigned locations and stay there until drive is done even if they shoot world record buck. They don't move so they can see better or to be more comfortable. This is done for safety, many deer are shot by the " drivers" and they need to know where everyone is to be safe, shots from standers are not into the drive but are only at the deer when past or next to the standers. Over 30 years of driving and only had to kick one person out for not listening.. there are no second chances rules are absolute. Family or not. Also only one ever kicked out of camp permanently even with the begging to come back not happening..
-
All kill deer all are effective, it's the hunter who is not proficient with them , I knew a traditional hunter that would put gun hunters to shame..
-
1 deer ever 3 years?? Wow camp is usually 6 or more deer during bow usually everyone getting on and acouple of guys filling couple of tags... good to know we are way above average
-
There is hardly any time in last 10 yeard we have had enough snow to open trails that early anyway.. poor excuse.
