I always try and say if it were he it would be as there are many factors in aging deer, imo having pics of previous years is about the only way to really know an age without cementum anaylisis

  7. Little guy added to camp tally... 6 buck gun, 3 buck 3 doe from bow and youth season.. 6 more deer to get to make average and a lot of season left..

  10. Was a good opening morning , 1 coyote and 5 buck taken a couple of other passed up a couple small ones. Nephews both got their 1st buck one a nice 8 and the other a broken 8. Those 2 kept me busy guiding them.how to gut their bucks and then hauling 5 deer out of woods before 9 am.. couplemgiys tagged out now so camp goes from 10 to 2 for most of the week..
  11. Around here chance of a bear us good ND shots are under 100 yard 90% of the time so a .44 would make sense, seen to many deer lost and bear wounded with .243.
  12. 2 spike so far one worked a tree over for few min.. walked by at 10 yards
  13. Had a buck grunting chasing a doe past me on way to the stand. Hope it's an eventful am
  14. Up very early with time change, long walk on a very chilly morning.. but it's start of vacation and spots for the rut should be good
  15. Going on vacation for week.. something should die.... I hope...lol
  16. I have an original trail timer that has a camera attachment ,uses a solenoid to make a plunger manually push the button on a 35 mm camera.. still works
  17. You need to shorten the cocking rope is all. its handles should be tight to string when 1st put on to cock it. And string should be tight almost stretching it a bit to get pull rope on. Best of luck !
  18. I've seen see leave woods in high winds as woods is to noisy and they are uncomfortable they will enter field with wind at back and use eyes .. they can't hear they are extremely uncomfortable.. they will use their nose to verify what they hear or see .
  19. I rake 100 yard path to my stand after leave fall lest last 100 yards be as quiet as possible
  20. It depends on maturity of deer, a fawn attention bubble is maybe 25 ft a young deer doesn't need to go far to feel safe maybe 50 yards, a older deer may need 100 yards a mature deer will have an attention bubble of 1/4 mile or more where it keeps tract of every sound. It will move well before it sees or smells you.. it's why you can ride up on a young deer on an atv,but a mature deer will dissappear at 1st sound it's uncomfortable with. Deer will come to grunt or bleat from hundreds of yards away , but need to be down wind for nose to be of any use.. as for original author deer will flee from sounds of dogs running before they see or smell then. As driving deer with dogs was common back then.
  21. Opening day of gun in southern zone is couple of weeks away ,but I never really do well opening day I amd most of camp has better luck on following day for 4 or 5 days as bucks sneak into sanctuary areas from surrounding acreage from pressure of surrounding properties.
  22. Hearing is more important , if a deer hears you it can simply avoid you or it will then circle down wind to identify you with nose or eyes by blowing and stomping to get you to move for verification. Mature deer will simply track your noise to avoid detection by you, they never need to smell you. . They let you simply walk by keeping track of you with ears. While looking with eyes , your scent can be blowing dead away or towards them and they will lay motionless or double back during a drive once they know you have past them.. Have watched huge mature deer snap up their head at the sound of an atv starting up over a mile away.. and not move from a Hunters scent 300 yards away blowing same direction . Sound is 360.. like a deer most successful hunters hear a deer long before they see them. Sitting in a tree remaining motenless may lessen your effect of sound but a squeaky seat, cam click of a gun safe will put a deer on alert in any direction , sound is 360.. rustling fabric , squeaks, metallic sounds, will bust you more than scent especially if your downwind. Make a sound and now they look for movement where they heard a sound.. that's what's gets you busted more often then not..
