Then what do you mean "won't cycle a LR round"? Does it still "cycle" 22rf short rounds?
-
There will be a long "jump" before the bullet engages the rifling. This is not desirable in any chamber as it tends to strip the driving surface of the bullet resulting in poor engagement with the rifling.

See text highlighted in red below.

Rimmed cartridges headspace on the rim, not the case mouth. Only rimless straight wall case headspace on the case mouth. Rimless semi-auto pistol cartridges are an example. As pointed out earlier, in a semi-auto 22lr action, the blow back might not be sufficient with 22rf short cartridges to cycle the action.. With bolts/levers, etc, the danger lies in erosion of the chamber ahead of the mouth of the case of the 22rf short cartridges being repeatedly fired in a 22lr chamber over a long period of time. This will cause 22lr cases to hang up when fired in a chamber thus eroded.

What's the difference? Baiting vs. Attracting
wildcat junkie replied to Zem18's topic in General Hunting
Just comparing it to the "spilled grain" scenario that is considered baiting for waterfowl. Seems like a "gray area". -
What's the difference? Baiting vs. Attracting
wildcat junkie replied to Zem18's topic in General Hunting
A place I hunted down near the Ohio River in Southern Indiana got hit hard by EHD in the summer of 1997. Nearly wiped out the deer. I hunted it hard that fall and only saw 1 deer and very few tracks. That was an area that was somewhat overpopulated before the disease took its toll. -

Not being critical, but I think once you bushhog it, it would be considered baiting. Just something to think about. -
Fired Up Some Charcoal Today

Damnit I m-missed a 70 yds broadside shot shooting over the rail! I couldn't see the front sight very well even though it was 3:30 PM. After the fact, I scraped the small beveled section at the top/rear of the silver blade with my knife. Now it stands out against a brown background. I should have done that in the 1st place. It's been a loooong time and my 67 YO eyes definitely aren't getting any better. Oh well, hunting with a muzzle loader is all about the challenge of doing it the way our ancestors did it IMO. Most likely I shot over. I was able to see the direction she ran and tracking her in the (dry) rain packed leaves was easy. I followed the track for about 150 yds to the old abandoned town road that borders my property and never found a trace of blood or hair. I'm going out this afternoon, but the wind direction will have me sitting on the ground. It's a good spot and a pretty good hide to boot. My Hammock Seat will make it a comfortable wait. I originally bought it for turkey hunting, but it is so handy to carry and quick to set up, I've been using it for deer hunting when I'm not hunting my woods or wind direction dictates a ground stand. . -
I saw a large cedar tree torn up like that in the Muscatuck National Wildlife Refuge East of Seymour Indiana and there ain't no bears within a hundred miles of there. At least not on the North side of the Ohio River.

That's the main branch, the whole enchilada. The East and West branches converge in Winthrop about 4 miles upstream. The picture was taken in my back yard about 10 steps from my kitchen deck.

Don't you realize that those "primitive" bows aren't effective hunting tools?

Biggest rack. 142# dressed 3 1/2 YO. Biggest body 219# dressed, 46" heart girth 4 1/2 YO. Best over all (toss up) 43" heart girth. Rack is slightly smaller than the 8-point in the 1st picture. Shot on November 29. 3 1/2 YO. Would probably have dressed as heavy as the big 4-point if I had shot him as early in the season. This years buck 205# dressed. 10-point rack about the same size over all as the 8-point pictured directly above 4 1/2 YO. All 4 shot from the tripod stand on my property.

Package riflescopes?
wildcat junkie replied to BaldguyLee's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Yep sell it on e-bay. Especially if it has a fancy smancy reticle. List it as "new other" which is what you do with "take off" stuff, but if you shoot the gun with the scope on it you can't truthfully list it as such.. Specify that it is a take off. Do it as an auction with a starting bid of about $50 to get them bidding. Luepold VX-2 3-9X40s are going dirt cheap right now. You will probably be able to get $75 or so + shipping for the junk scope. -
Along with some sulfur & salt peter. It smelled delicious and I think the charcoal burner bug has bitten me again. Since the 2 boys failed to connect this year and 1 buck won't keep 3 of us in venison sticks & burger, I decided to break out my charcoal burner to try for some more meat for the freezer. It's a half stock .54 cal Plains Rifle I built in 1983 on a 35" Sharon barrel, 1 in 70" twist .540 @ the lands, .570 in the grooves with an L&R "Hawken" lock. It shoots a .535 RB with .020" patch over 100 gr a FFFg (real) black powder. Mv is in the neighborhood of 1900 fps and it has a + or - MPBR of about 150yds. It's a bit long, but balances well for offhand shooting. I took 7 Indiana White Tails with it before I switched to flintlock and 5 NY White Tails from 1998 to 2001 when I lost interest due to exclusion of bucks in our area during the early season.. The powder seems to have weathered 16 years well as have the CCI #11 percussion caps. I even used some caps that were lying around in the bottom of the possibles bag to clear the breech & take a few shots after I got it cleaned up. (lots of LPS-3 gunk in the breech) I loaded 10 fresh caps from the tin in the MAC capper. I set up 3 jugs @ 60 yds and after missing the 1st few shots getting used to the sight picture, I busted 3 in a row. I was shooting over so I drew down with a 6:00 hold. The 1st hit (on the left) was a bit low, but the next 2 pretty well centered the jugs. I load from the bag using traditional accouterments I can load & fire 3 shots a minute after the initial shot.. In the center under the bag are my short starter tried to the loading block that holds 5 patched balls pre-lubed with Crisco. To the right is my brass powder flask with a 100 gr charging spout. A little below on to the left of the flask is a MAC capper that holds 10 caps and is very quick & handy to use. Since the bag does double duty for my .54 flintlock I keep some flints, a priming horn, a 120 gr charging spout and a knapping hammer for dressing flints which are group near the top and to the left. A wrought iron screw driver is also in the bag as well as some extra .535 balls, patches, Crisco and caps "just in case. I carry cleaning patches in the patch box of the rifle. (not sure how my camera battery and charger got into the picture) The small leather pouch carries a cleaning jag, nipple wrench, a spare nipple and a ball/patch puller. I've taken deer from less than 5 yds to over 150 yd with that rifle. I expect my shots to be from 40 to 75 yds from a rest. I want to get out every evening over gthe next 4 days with the possible exception of Saturday if the wind is out of the Northeast as predicted.

When I lived in S Indiana I kept beagles. I hunted cottontails over them with a 12ga double barrel muzzle loader. I had a small "shop" on the back porch that was not far from the kennels. The 1st step in preparation for the hunt was to snap some caps on the shotgun's nipples to clear the breech of oil before loading. When my dogs would hear that they would start baying and carrying on because they knew what was coming next.

Given your dual purpose use, I would go with the 6.5 due to the availability of light weight .264 bullets with superior ballistic coefficient compared to the .308.. If you drop below 150 gr in the .308 bullet you will get a rainbow trajectory beyond 200yds. A 95 gr .264 V-max has a BC of .365, still respectable. A 135 gr .308 V-max has a BC of .290. That will lose velocity fast and be more susceptible to wind drift. For long range target work, a 140gr BTHP match bullet in .264 will have a BC of .580 or better. You would have to go to a .308 bullet in the 200 gr weight range for that BC value. In a nut shell, the 6.5 will be far more capable at long range yet still have plenty of snot for any North American hoofed game. Worldwide, there have been more moose killed with the 6.5x55 Swede than any other cartridge.

WE used to play H-O-R-S-E with traditional bows. My good friend shot left handed so he would get under the front of his slide -in camper, cant the bow almost horizontally to the left, and make an easy 10 yd shot. For us right handed shooters it was very very difficult to make that 10 yd shot. It could be done right handed by pinching the nock of the arrow (if you shot split finger style) and twisting the arrow up against the shelf, but if it was a small target like a beverage can, it was still quite difficult. Unfortunately, the way things were situated on his "range", there were no such opportunities for a right handed shot with similar disadvantages for a left handed shooter..

Killed while walking her dogs at 5:30, that's dark
wildcat junkie replied to Curmudgeon's topic in General Hunting
Let me point something out to you. You are the one that bemoans the drastic danger of extending hours 1/2 hour beyond the current rules, yet almost all states see fit to allow it. Seems that if it was such a danger, it wouldn't be a common practice. Here's another question. How many people shot when "mistaken for game" in NY State over the last 20 years were wearing florescent orange? Granted this lady wasn't hunting, but the vast majority of those killed are hunters. -

So why does virtually every other state that I am aware of have 1/2 prior/after sunrise/sunset as legla big game hunting hours? -
So, if you cant a longbow or recurve when shooting, does that disqualify them?
