No more doe tags at all for 6A or even 6C unless you own land in 6C.. 6K was the nearest WMU with doe tags that has ample public land. My son & I applied there for our 1st choice. My son got drawn. Any suggestions on public land that doesn't get extreme pressure that hold a decent deer density? I'm 67 YO and just getting back into shape 2 total knee replacements and 3 foot surgeries over the last 5 years. I can walk pretty good distances on moderate terrain, but extremely rigged terrain isn't a viable option. My son is 28 YO, in great shape and doesn't smoke so we can exploit multiple access points as long as swamps, steep ravines and such would make overland foot travel impossible.

Yeah, I understand your concern, but it would not leave the stand if a MTB goes quietly by. It just might nudge some subtle movement and it's not likely spook deer out of the immediate area.. If it were me, I would be proacgtive and go talk to the new homeowner. See if you guys can work out some sort of schedule.rather than waiting to encounter him in the woods.

280 REM is one of the most under appreciated calibers. Out of a 24" barrel, when loaded to the same pressure with Norma MRP, it is nipping at the heals of the Remington 7mm Mag and it is much more consistent IMO. My 280 Rem M700 CDL would spit 139gr Interbonds at 3150 FPS out of the 24" barrel at <60K chamber pressure. Even with a drop tube, one can't stuff enough MRP in the 280 case to exceed 60K pressure with 139/140gr bullets.

My experience with deer and bicycles is that unless the bicycle stops, deer don't seem to associate it with danger. I have had them literally stand less than 5 yds away and watch me go by when they were in cover. Unless you have crowds, I don't think it will affect your hunting much. I have also ridden within 30yds of Black Bears and mere feet from Ruffed Grouse. MTBs don't make much noise and the frontal and perhaps even the side profile must look like another deer to wildlife.

Rail Systems for 30 30 Scope ?
wildcat junkie replied to GreeneHunter's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Why ruin the sleek lines and handling of a classic lever gun when the ranges that the cartridge is capable of are easily handled with (good) metallic sights? Why not upgrade to a receiver sight with a large aperture for quick target acquisition? -
While management has an effect on antler size, soil composition also has a huge influence too. The Southern Indiana limestone area has, on average, much larger racks than the Knobstone Karst regions that are predominately shale. Agriculture also has is a factor as better nutrition and the addition of phosphorous to the soil in farming practices equals bigger racks. 8 and 9-point racks are not incommen on 1 1/2 year old bucks in the south central area of Indiana which has both high calcium content on the soil and lots of corn/soy bean crops. This is a 1 1/2 YO buck that I took in 1990 from a F&W area on the N/E corner of the South central Indiana limestone region. I shot him in a river bottom just off the edge of some large soybean fields. He was aged and weighed at the F&W check station. He dressed 142#. This size rack on a yearling buck is not highly unusual in that area. Go deep into the Knobststone Karst region away from any agricultural activity and a rack of that size would mist likely be closer to 3 1/2 YO. Yearlings will be spike/crotch horns and dress around 90#.

Haven't bow hunted since I moved to the North Country. Damned muzzlelaoader and gun seasons open so early they screw up for bow hunting. When did bow hunt I used; 11/32" Port Orford cedar shafts 60-65# spine 420-430gr raw shaft weight heat tempered an straightened before sealing Walnut stain, Saturn yellow dip, black, white & gold crest, Saturn yellow nocks 5 1/2" shield custom burned 3-fletch 126gr glue on Bear Razorheads, file sharpened with bleeder inserts. 545gr arrow mass I still have these and I would bet that they are as straight now as they were when I made them. These arrows will cut through a mature buck's rib cage like a hot knife through butter.

For about $20 more you can get a VX-II 3-9X40 and it is made in the USA unlike the Chinese Vortex. Nikon, if it is made in Japan, would be another good choice. I would never consider Vortex as other manufactures have similar features and optics without the Chinese crap shoot.

Flemish string construction uses all of the strands for the loop whereas "endless loop" strings have only 1/2 the number of strands in the loop compared to Flemish strings of similar strand count. Flemish strings kind of provide their own "padding".

When I left Southern Indiana in 1998, about 1/2 of the bow hunters were shooting traditional bows. Many found that in a clutch situation at the usual close ranges, the instinctive shooting style was less prone to error. Not sure what the percentage of traditional bow hunters is now.

It specifies older traditional bows WITHOUT REINFORCED LIMB TIPS.

Slug Gun Sighting Prefrence

Do you have a link to language concerning shipping ammo to New York State? -
I shot FF Flemish strings on all of the traditional bows I had. What I like about FF strings is that they do not change brace height when unstrung and restrung like Dacron strings. Any modern (FG laminated) bow should be able to take the shock unless the string nocks are fragile. Most quality bows made from the late 1960s on had reinforced string nocks as does the bow in OPs post.

Unlike compound bows, recurves, and even more so longbows, will not lose significant velocity with moderate arrow weight increases. I once ran my 60# Howatt "Hunter" over a chronograph with 100gr and 145gr screw in broadheads. The velocity loss was less than 5 fps average. Cut on contact broadheads will significantly improve penetration. I soid a lot of Magnus 2 blade (4 with insert) broadneads when I had my traditional archery business. My favorites were the old 125gr Bear glue on razorheads. My wife and I made and sold about 350 dozen custom cedar arrows back in the mid 1990s. These are my personal hunting arrows. I had arrows in Germany and France. I still have about 2000 Port Orford Cedat shafts in the barn. As others have said, 40yds is stretching it. 30 yds was my maximum and most of my bow kills were 20yds or less.

The general trend is over just about 10,000 years and we are now on an upswing. Answer this. Who would have more incentive to spread disinformation? Scientists that are supporting the human induced climate change theory, or scientists working for the carbon based energy industry that stands to lose billions of $$$ if the theory is true?

Well, at least our tax $$$$ won't be lining Trump's pockets for secret service protection at Trump Tower anymore. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/secret-service-vacates-trump-tower-command-post-in-lease-dispute-with-presidents-company/2017/08/03/7338de16-785d-11e7-8f39-eeb7d3a2d304_story.html?utm_term=.916dc9c581eb

I'm also learning that the inherent inconsistencies of rf ammunition also contribute to the frustration factor. The top score in the "modified" and "honorary" (basically unlimited) class is only 39 so far and all targets thus far submitted have fat least 1 flyer. One of those targets was shot with selected Lapua Midas + ammo, $15 for a box of 50 and it still had a round that was off in Mv resulting in a low flyer according to the guy that shot it..

This target is scored by "worst edge" too. All rings from 9 down are only .1" wide meaning that to get the ring score you must hit better than center of the inner line of that ring with a .22 to get the score. Touch the outer ring and you get the lower score. Whomever cooked up this target is a diabolical sadist!

My Dream Rifle Shoots Like A Dream!
wildcat junkie replied to grampy's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I used to shoot a lot of (offhand) competition with my flintlock at distances up to 100yds. On the days I really did well, the rifle went off (or at least the stone fell) as if by mental will. I called it "unconscious", Not a "surprise" persee, just a mental impulse, but no conscious trigger pull. I've had days like that with modern firearms too and shot well on those occasions. BTW, your zero is about perfect for maximum PBR. you should be within 3" of POA at any distance from the muzzle to 300yds.
