  1. Measure the "heart girth" just behind the front legs. If you pull the tape snug, it's pretty accurate. 43" will be close to 190# dressed http://www.marylandhuntingquarterly.com/files/Download/HeartGirthChart.pdf
  2. 6A is having a bumper crop this year. That isn't necessarily a good thing as it tends to suppress movement as deer don't need to search for food as much. Red Oaks only bear every other year. Not all Red Oak trees in an given area aren't necessarily on the same schedule so you can have some acorns every year.. White Oaks, on the other hand, bear every year.
  3. Teddy Roosevelt, the original Progressive.
  4. Correct that! I now have 100rds. I used 7 busting up rocks in the back yard at 60yds.
  5. I need to get to the range and check the zero! I have 107 rounds loaded up for it. I'm hoping I can reliably bust a milk jug at 200yds with it.
  6. It's an oil finish. If it gets scratched, it can be buffed out with steel wool and touched up. That stock cost me a whole $15 and it looked horrendous, (for a Krag) it had a Monte Carlo comb & cheekpiece with a pistol grip and white line spacers.
  7. Okay Pygmy, try not to make a "mess"! The bad news is; I couldn't get the brown hue I was looking for by skipping the boiling step. The good news is; The blue came out pretty well. The blue isn't high gloss and it blends well with the rest of the unpolished metal work. Since I wasn't going for a "brand new look", I avoided polishing parts that still had an even patina. The magazine door and all of the bolt parts except the bolt handle were left as is and rust blued over the existing patina.
  8. As a mater of fact, I went to the range and popped a few 8mm-06 Ackley Improved caps to day.
  9. Well, actually there's a little village about 1/2 way between Butler and Kittanning off of 422 founded by and named after my ancestors. "Fennelton", ever here of it? We moved away in 1959, but returned to the Irwin area in 1967 and later, Springdale. In 1973 I left PA for good. I still have relatives in the Butler and Tarantum area. I load Hornady 160gr FTX bullets made for the 308 Marlin express. They feed like greased suasages and chronograph @ 2580 fps average. I was using the FTX for the 30/30, but the Mv was a bit too much for them.
  10. Yep, it's the rifle in my avatar. My Dad bought it for $12 on 1958. I was a wide eyed 8 year old sitting in the kitchen of a Western PA farmhouse watching the deal go down. Except for the Pacific K-2 receiver sight, I'm restoring it to a similar condition as when Dad bought it. (The GI sights are horrible for hunting) It needs another rust/boil/card cycle and then I"m going to skip the boil & just rust/card the last coat to try for an "antique" finish. Due to their not being conducive to boiling, I left a few items (striker/extractor/safety) as is and I am going try to match the patina on those. I might try going heavy with the wire wheel to wear through a few "high spots" to simulate 80+ tears of (careful) handling. I want it to look like a well cared for late 1920s "sporterized" Krag sporting an original patina finish. I sanded through some of the original metal finish when I had the rear sight base screw holes welded up and restocked it a couple of years ago. A rust blue job was in order.. I should have it finished in a few days. I post some pictures when it is done.
  11. Seems like it cleaned up pretty well with a wire brush. Maybe I got lucky.
  12. Which is why most state have 1/2 hour before/after sunset as the rule.
  13. There's no gray area. You can not have a loaded gun and a flashlight that has more than 2 AA batteries (actual definition is "small flashlight" this is the only gray area) in the woods before/after sunset. You can track wounded game with an unloaded gun with said "small" flashlight. If you want to go back and get a lantern/larger flashlight. leave the weapon behind. If you have a light that is bigger than the guideline you can't have any weapon. It can be considered hunting with the aid of a light.
  14. Unless you want to take out 500+ people in 10 minutes. We are talking about a different mindset here.
  15. Modifying a semi-auto to shoot full auto is something I could do without instructions in about 30 minutes in my garage. Modifying a semi-auto to "selective fire" is another story altogether.
  16. Just think, Howard Hill did it with a longbow.
  17. I'm located quite a ways to the ENE. I would be coming down either SR3 or US 11 and I-81 so the north or Western end would be most convenient. I have been perusing maps and the DEC legal description and the odd shape of 6K is quite a challenge to follow on a topo map. If I could find a suitable spot, I would be open to bringing my 24' travel trailer to make a weekend out of it. Sorry to here about your friends. Not allowing the guards to have their weapons loaded was a very poor decision IMO and just another example of political concerns having more weight than the safety or our troops in areas that are unstable.
  18. Fold over usually occurs when a semi hard object like bone is encountered. The pointy tip catches and penetrates just enough to catch and fold over the tip slightly stopping penetration. That doesn't usually occur with rocks. The chisel tip will either cut trough a small bone like a rib, or likely deflect and penetrate the vitals. Even a slight chisel tip is much stronger than a sharp point in that respect. May you have good luck.
  19. Has Pennsylvania changed? When I lived there in the '60s & '70s you had to display your back tag just like Southern Zone of NY. I had assumed that was why you had to display in the Southern zone given the proximity of the PA border.
  20. I always "chisel point" fixed blade broadheads. It prevents curling of the tip on bone inpact and if a large bone is encountered they will be more likely to deflect and slide by rather than stick in the bone. At one time I honed a razor edge on the blades but went to file sharpening with a finish up on ceramic sticks. That produces a micro-serrated edge that cuts trough hair & bone better and does not dull as easily as a finely honed edge. BTW, I like your "spliced" cock feather. I used to do the same thing.
  21. No more doe tags at all for 6A or even 6C unless you own land in 6C.. 6K was the nearest WMU with doe tags that has ample public land. My son & I applied there for our 1st choice. My son got drawn. Any suggestions on public land that doesn't get extreme pressure that hold a decent deer density? I'm 67 YO and just getting back into shape 2 total knee replacements and 3 foot surgeries over the last 5 years. I can walk pretty good distances on moderate terrain, but extremely rigged terrain isn't a viable option. My son is 28 YO, in great shape and doesn't smoke so we can exploit multiple access points as long as swamps, steep ravines and such would make overland foot travel impossible.
