Thought I would share this...My son is down in Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay smacking down ducks yesterday and today. They are getting Blue bills, buffies, oldsqwa, scoters Good times by looks of it -
Town of Throop and Aurelius is where I’ve hunted them along their northern flyway. North of Auburn. Wary smart birds for sure.
-
I get thousands of them flying over my property every morning and evening. They use my pines each morning and make a ruckus when I’m hunting deer. When there are gut piles the crows can surpass a hundred or more in the general area. The crows and the wuzzles wipe out a gut pile in a day. There are just so many now not sure why but fun to shoot occasionally during winter weekends.

You should come hunt in Cayuga County for the crows. The city of Auburn has roosts of crows in the winter over 30000 crows. Perhaps 8 to 10 yrs ago it was like 60000 and National Geographic filmed a documentary. They roost in the downtown area and it’s like something out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie. They fly out in tremendous groups every morning and return each night. I hunted them a few times and got a couple here and there but never more than a few and the whole flock would shift. A local bar used to hold an annual crow shoot but think it eventually got shut down. They are nasty scavenger birds that my lab wouldn’t even retrieve but fun to shoot at. I have a call and that helped but guy who won the crow derby used an owl and crow decoys together with an electronic distress crow call. He and his partner shot like 20+ in a day. I was happy to shoot a couple.

Forgot got a big one on camera one of them long legged black bears. haha
-
Based on my cameras just finished pulling cards....they are bedding in woods adjacent or as close as possible to available food sources which are more limited this time of year. Seem to be herding up a bit but not huge groups like I see with heavy snow cover. Bucks seem to have already formed bachelor groups with their bros.

Yes have to consider Capital Gains tax due when selling outside of retirement funds but not a factor on Roth or 401k unless of course you take an early distribution which is kind of pointless. 2020 and 2021 May end up being good years to take in capital gains on the sale of securities held both long and short outside of retirement accounts as a lot of W-2 1040 and Sub S income for people has dropped due to the pandemic this reduction in income may offset some of those capital gains perhaps the government being liberal minded now Will allow a lower capitol gains tax rate though I doubt it as believe the plan for next administration is to tax the wealthy. time will tell.

IMO the best way to get started investing is thru a qualified retirement plan thru your employment where your employer matches a percent of what you elect to invest each pay period. Say you invest 5% of your weekly gross and they match 5% so each week you’re investing 10% of your gross overtime it builds up and you buy it each week approximately dollar cost averaging so that you’re buying during low price periods and higher price periods so your dollar cost averaging each week overtime it builds up and if the market goes up overtime you make money you use the dividends to purchase index mutual funds that are tied to certain sectors...financial...technology.. healthcare ...private equity... emerging markets other countries etc. the investment spectrum is endless. The general idea is do not invest any money that you cant afford to lose. So have a conservative time cost average initial nest egg say set a goal of 25k or less to begin with once you get there use the dividends and additional investments to start to invest more in aggressively. Be conservative to start so you can learn and watch to get experience and read whatever you can about the market DAILY. The market is very hot right now prices are high it’s best to let the market cool prices drop and then come in and buy at lower prices hopefully like zag said lots of risk but if you buy lower and the price goes high you get a real nice return specially on individual stocks it’s like gambling with #DATA but it takes discipline guts/knowledge and luck but most all consistency.

Retirement for me will be no longer having to work a 50 hour week for someone else. I can consult and do odd jobs if I want to stay busy but truthfully If I could afford it I would retire now it’s 53 and enjoy spending time traveling and with family traveling never gets old.

I keep 2/3 of retirement portfolio 401k traditional and a Roth in fairly conservative stocks that I have purchased over 28 years of working. They are dollar cost averaging a lower basis and produce tremendous dividends annually so I really don’t mess with them much it’s like having the golden goose. Another third of my portfolio more Roth related I have been time trading with and doing very well that is where I made the 46% this past year mostly in Apple and Fidelity’s ETF technology. So I took my gains today and move them to cash I fully expect to reinvest shortly once I get a better feel for how the new politics will affect certain sectors like healthcare and pot stocks they seem to be favored more for the next administration. I have never done this before mass with a third of my portfolio but I took a new job a little over a year ago and it comes with a pension so between that and Social Security I pretty much know my fixed income when I retire so I figure I can get a little more aggressive with my supplemental income retirement sources. But I certainly don’t expect 46% again this year I’d be happy with 23. As you know farms in Iowa and second homes in Aruba aren’t cheap. Dreams!!!

Just sold off a ton cashed in 1/3 of portfolio. Got a 46% gain in 1 yr and harvested since that’s not normal so didn’t want to be a pig pigs get slaughtered. With 2/3 of portfolio still at work in low basis securities will sit back and wait for next steep market drop and re up in favorable sector funds/ETFs From an investment perspective 2020 was my best year ever for this portion of my portfolio hoping to find half those returns in 2021 would make happy.

Golden day on Cayuga Lake 2021. It’s a wrap -
Thanks Moog as you know it takes a while to get them big like this. These aren’t even that big. You guys get some giants up and around Rochester. It all comes down to passing little bux And let them grow a bit till they’re more mature why we will never be Iowa it’s nice to see pockets where the herd can expand and grow a bit without being sniped.
