6.8 SPC Fir Deer? and in AR15 platform?

Recommended Posts

I've been looking into it this round had bridges the gap between the 5.56mm and the 7.62mm

It's biggger, not going to blow ur arm off and I was wondering if anyone on this site has used it in the field and this also is a question for gunsmiths.

What do you think?

Also what do u think on using AR's on deer

I've heard of quite a few hunters taking deer with this round. Personally I think it's a little light but thats just me. As for the AR platform for deer hunting, absolutley. As a matter of fact I just started saving up for one myself. They are very reliable, accurate, modular rifles which will do very well for hunting. As for caliber I'm probably going to get one in .308. You can get them in .243 or if you want some serious knockdown power you can get them in .450 bushmaster or .458 socom. I think the AR will be the choice of many hunters in the future.

6.8 is a great round for deer. I am going to be putting a 6.8 upper together for my AR so that I can use it in rifle zones. Its the same diameter bullet as a 270 traveling at @ 2500fps. Plenty for whitetails. I am already collecting up brass.

One of these days I will also be doing a 458 for larger game.

The AR is a great platform for hunting, the pure flexibility and potential for long range accuracy is fantastic.

Pawlee, get ready for some serious sticker shock when you start pricing out even a modest AR10 (long action)

The 6.8 is a nice fit for the AR platform, but then so is the .308, which would be more versatile..

All that said, I wouldn't be seen carrying one of those monstrosities around the woods.

I'd rather be caught carrying a nickel plated Ladysmith with pink grips.

However, I respect differences in taste. What is ugly to me is beautiful to someone else ( like WNYBuckhunter)..

I like walnut, blued metal and light, graceful fixed power scopes, where he likes composite, stainless and big ugly variable scopes...hehehehehe.... To each his own.

This reminds me of one year a fellow on the neighboring property allowed his son to let his friends come and hunt on there property 4 of them with semi auto rifles,on a 2 acre piece of property.Well opening day about 8:00 am 9 rapid shots came from that property. An hour later the son comes to our friends property and asks if anyone of us had a doe permit the could have, which we did not that year.We went to look at the deer,it had 2 bullet holes in it,1 threw the right knee and 1 threw the nose. Some one had slit its neck to put it down.Needless to say the son and his friends were not alowed to hunt there any more.

Pygmy, the beauty of the 6.8spc is that its a short action round that works off of the AR15 platform instead of the more expensive AR10 platform. The AR15 can be built nice and light weight with the 6.8 with a 16" barrel and composite stocks, etc. They are a joy to tote around on long walks. That being said, they arent for everyones taste.

BTW, my Encore has stainless and a variable scope, but it has walnut, doesnt that count for anything? Hahaha

Somewhere down the line, my plans are for a .260 chambered AR10 to join my collection. Im drooling just thinking about it.....flat top with a nice variable scope.......Ill be back in a few minutes.....

So it was the guns fault?

Sorry WNYBuck... The stainless and the big objective variable TRUMPS the walnut...

Besides, I think Encores are as ugly as AR-15s...hehehehe...

There are some attractive single shots out there..Ruger # 1 is a good example.. I also like Remington Rolling Blocks, Sharps and even the lowly Springfield Trapdoor has its appeal..

Ugly or not the AR does have it's place in the hunting woods. I happen to like both the traditional hunting rifles and the AR / black rifles.

WNY- yeah I'm aware that spending more than a grand is common place for an AR. Plus optics and such. Money well spent in my eyes.

      Hello -
I'm in the market for a shotgun geared towards waterfowl hunting. I am new to hunting and female, so I don't want a macho gun that'll give me such kickback that I'll fly backwards upon firing or spend too much $, my budget is $500 tops and I'm guessing I need a 20 gauge. I was considering a Remington 870 (the low end model) or even a Benelli Nova. I read that for duck hunting in LI or NYS whatever, the gun can not have more than 3 rounds in it, I'm not sure how or if that impacts what kind of gun I need to get. Also what kind of action is best?
Any and all model recommendations are welcomed. Thanks for your help.
P.S. If anyone knows of a good gun store in Manhattan (yeah I know), or LI let me know. Aside from looking for a gun, I need to know where to buy one!

Hey guys, i recently got rid of an old 16 ga, i have some shells left over from hunting with it and need to find a home for them. dont know if it would be worth it to anyone but i have about half a box(approx 15-20) shells, Slugs, and shot shells. if anyone near me has a 16 ga and would like them let me know. Hate to throw them away when a fellow hunter could use them. im in Newark Valley area just give a hollar if you could use them.

hey guys heres a question, my wife recently got me a new gun, Savage .308, i absoltely love it but i have put 2 boxes of winchester 180 grain shells thrrough it and still havent had a good group on bull. i have a 3x9x40 riflescope on top mounted securley because after a few shots i thought maybe the scope mounts were loose and it was causing a bad pattern, but it was not. is the 180 grain maybe a little too much for my deer hunting needs, should i drop down in load size what are some ideas to get this gun ready before i really need it next month. i do not want to chance going afield with a gun that may not be sighted correctly and make a poor shot and chance anything but a clean kill.

Finished my AR, just in time for the season however, I still have a long way to go before this puppy, well, kills a puppy. I don't have any free time to polish off my load development so I plan on doing it all opening day after the first setups. Looks I am designated cameraman. You can read the full article here...
