I get my view back! Edited September 13, 2012 by growalot
WNYBuckHunter
Yeah they are cutting the corn all around my area as well. Gonna be an odd early bow season with no standing corn.
growalot
any tips on what the deer will be doing...in general? and do they use the liquid cow manure on those fields? Edited September 13, 2012 by growalot
landtracdeerhunter
Are they combining or chopping the corn?
WNYBuckHunter
Chopping it from what Ive seen so far. No liquid manure right near me, but Im sure they will in some spots. The deer will most likely turn to any hard mast thats available, and beans. What will be most interesting is that they wont have the standing corn to use as a hiding spot. You know how tough it is to get them out of there, even driving a field with a bunch of walkers? We tried it last year a bunch of times and from up in the stand, you could see them pop out on the edges of the field just ahead of the drivers, watch them go by and back into the corn they went. I also had some monsters within bow range of one of my stands last year stay right in the corn, about 4 or 5 rows in. Never got a shot at them because of it. growalot
All the corn around here was planted in 15 in. rows for chopping this farmer has huge bunkers that they fill up and tarp up.....there are so many ten ton trucks coming in and out...stopped once...I heard the grinding...think they hit something...took several minutes before they got it going again Edited September 13, 2012 by growalot
landtracdeerhunter
Choppers don't like rocks. Shortage of hay so more corn will be chopped. Up to 20% more per acre in 15" rows. Deer will head for your food sources, hopefully. Get some oats in the ground, just planted more this am.. growalot
I over planted a field again last week ...now I'm seeing growth..so it will be in different stages... and the rye I planted near the corn recovered after the last rains beautiful green tender growth with a little brassica that also recovered
Four Season Whitetail's
I always plant atleast 2 acres of corn to leave standing all year long. We have 600 acres of corn on the main farm this year so when thats gone my plots of alfalfa and standing corn are going to be Hot,Hot,Hot!!! phade
The manure will be like kryptonite if it is laid on thick. Deer will avoid it if they have chance to go around it. I cringe when I see it pop up shortly after a field is harvested. But, you can use it to your advantage knowing that, too. As long as you have the ground, sometimes you have an imaginary pinch point/funnel for a few weeks. Doc
Liquid manure ...... I always get a gag-reflex when ever I drive by a freshly spread feld with that stuff on it. That is the sourist, most focused, stink that ranks right up there with sticking your nose in a decomposing deer carcass (not that I have ever tried that....lol). I always wonder what must it be like be like to be a down-wind neighbor right next to one of those "treated" fields. I remember once seeing a clothesline full of laundry out in the yard while that stuff was being spread. I'm sure somebody was getting some funny looks when people were trying to talk to them. Back in the days when manure was just hand pitched out of the barn and into the spreader and wasn't hanging around fermenting, it wasn't too bad. In fact, it smelled kind of farmy and ok. But this putrid stuff they are spreading is enough to gag a maggot off a gut-cart. In fact, speaking of maggots, it was just a couple of years ago that a farmer over in Honeoye had a bit of a problem with fly infestation because of the brew he was spreading on his fields. Neighbors all around his farm were being swarmed by flies..... nice!

phade
Trukeys however, love it, at least in Spring in my experience. Bugs come to it and they flock.
sampotter
Phade is correct about it creating a funnel. You might as well have a lake there- deer won't cross it unless pursued. On the other hand you can walk through it to cover your boot scent. I will be hanging all my clothes in the heifer barn this year. My grandad always used to say there was no better cover scent than to wear your barn clothes and boots out hunting. As I remember he, my Dad , and uncle killed a lot of deer after chores in their barn clothes. Lagoon manure is a different beast though. fasteddie
Back to the manure ... I lived out in the sticks as a kid --- Groveland . The farm kids had to do chores in the am and the big thing then was Engineer Boots . The farm kids would still have cow crap on them when they went to school . They would sit next to the radiators in study hall in the winter time and put their boots against the radiators . It would stink up the whole room . As for the liquid manure , I gag when I smell it also . Don't know how the guy that spreads it doesn't gag .
growalot
Because he's driving away from it so the rest of us can gag...lol
RangerClay
The manure will be like kryptonite if it is laid on thick. Deer will avoid it if they have chance to go around it. That's what I was going to say. Deer hate manure.
mxsmitz201
they just chopped the corn around me and whatta ya know a day later i look out and i have 6 deer mowing down my chicory and brassicas, were out there from 530 till i couldnt see no longer due to darkness. thats the most ive seen at any one time on my plots and the longest they've stuck around. i took note of the date they began chopping and am interested to see if the number of trail cam pics goes up. phade
They chopped the corn behind me yesterday...I couldn't believe how much acreage they chopped in between my 8 hour work day...I immediately ran out to check the cams as I had them set between the corn and the bordering hedge rows. Thankfully the hands didn't steal them. Had one set over a white oak dropping..cam was there for 3 days and filled up a 2 gig card on 10 second videos. All does and 1.5s unfortunately. At first I was really worried they were going to lay down the manure...but even if they do, the parcel really only has one funnel with some tall grass cover anyway now and they'll still use it. WNYBuckHunter
I noticed a few bucks and a bunch of does out in the beans last evening. Mind you the beans are brown as can be and almost dried out completely in that field. I usually dont see them hitting the dried up beans untill all of the corn is gone during the late season. Theres still 2 standing corn fields they havent chopped yet near that bean field too. Odd.
