So much for the three day weekend rut hunt this weekend. Kids and ex still don't have power so they will be at my house. Something little to give up considering what some are going through.

Steve and Doe, have at it this weekend. Just leave one standing for me at gun season.

I didn't hear from Steve or Doe so hopefully there are some deer still roaming the property! Headed up this afternoon to hunt with my brother, my friend Craig and his son Zach. I'll give Zach the option of what stand he wants. I know one thing my bottom stand which we will now call the "bear den" will be sat in by one of us all day Saturday. Will report back Sunday night, good luck all!

Just got back from camp! It was a great weekend. Had my brother,

friend Craig and his son Zach at the camp. Saturday was great. Zach

was down in the "bear den" stand, I was at a food plot stand and Jeff

was hunting a cut corn field. We all did all day sits. Zach saw 6

bucks and 9 doe. Two shooters where in the bunch the real wide 10

point and the tall 8. These two came into him as close as 20 yards but

no shot. The only buck chasing the does was the tall 8 pt and a small

6 pt. The wide 10 was not interested. I saw a small buck following a

doe by my stand. I get a text from Jeff that he just missed the deer I

shot three weeks ago, the broken 8pt. He said the deer was fine. 5

minutes later he texted that he shot a big 8 pt. I meet him at his

stand at 9. We find hair and no blood. He said the shot was foward in

the chest neck area. He swears the arrow was sticking out of the deer

as it ran. We found hair in another spot 20 yards from impact still no

blood. 4 guys looked over the whole area for a 10 hours between

yesterday and today. Nothing found except an 8pt shed. The shot is on

video and I will post it at a later date. It looks like the arrow hits

the deer where he said, it's a bit tough to tell. I get back in my

stand and have a deer come out late in the afternoon. He presents a

clear 32 yard shot so I take it. The deer turns as I release and the

arrow goes into the deer high in the back and take out an artery. He

crashes 25 yards away, a done deal. not a big deer but my 5 year jinx

is over. We go out Sunday morning and Zach shoots a nice 6pt. The deer

quarters away from him and his shot is far back but drives up through

liver. We track the deer for 75 yards. I jump the deer and he has a

real hard time getting up and actually falls down twice. He moves off

into thicker cover and we back out. We let the deer go for about 2

hrs. We resume the tracking and have decent blood and then it stops.

we start doing circles and spend the next hour just looking for the

deer itself. BTW te deer did cross onto my neighbors property. We have

a rule to call each other and thats what I did. He got back to me and

said it was fine and good luck. I was about 50 yards from Zach and

started to smell a buck. There were lots of scrapes in the area but

this was pretty strong. I headed into the wind and came upon a brushy

area that was perfect bedding spot. Right in the middle was Zach's

buck dead. He was so excited. The kid learned a lot from the tracking

and the arrow placement on the deer. Here is a kid I mentored 3 years

ago putting all he has learned into practice. His first buck will be

mounted and he wants it to stay at the cabin for a while. A great

weekend, doing laundry right got to be ready to leave in 4 days!!!

Can't wait.

Thanks Steve and Doe. Steve your right what a great piece of property. I really got a good look around while tracking this deer. My property sides and back border thick cover and bedding areas. These are huge bedding areas of thorns, pines and brush. It holds a lot of deer. scrapes were huge and all over the fringes of the bedding area.

headed out tonight around midnight. Should make the cabin by 5:30, going to try to get in one last bow hunt! I my my brother, his daughter (newbie) and a friend coming along. We will have all the escape routes covered. Weather looks good, it should be a great 3 days of hunting.

Good Luck all,

Burt

Yes we should all get together sometime, shoot some clays or something at a range for the day and then drink a few cold ones and share some lies, umm I mean success stories.

And you are lucky you didn't txt me at 5am Burt cuz my wife would've killed you first and then me second.
