What is wrong with this little guy

Can anybody tell what maybe wrong with this little guy? I can not tell if he is loosing his hair or if he is a pieball. What are your thoughts? The picture was taken back in July of this year.

Shedding maybe? I actually see alot of deer with patches like this during the summer.

just the other day I saw a doe that looked worse then that, like it lost a fight with a velcro machine. but I'm sure it's a natural coat process & a healthy animal. funny how it doesn't happen to them all at once.

Just looks like he is getting a new coat.  Dicks probably didn't have his size and it is on back order

I have one on cam like that, actually a lot bigger patches.  But looks healthy, as everyone else said its prob the coat change.

the new coats are coming in now this time of year, some may already be in there new cats but most are transitioning around this time.

Perfectly normal. Like others have said, he's just losing his bright summer coat and getting in his darker winter coat.

I have several pictures in the last 2 weeks with deer getting their winter coat. I also noticed my black lab is doing the same thing. It kind odd worries me they are switching their coats this early. Might be a early winter or colder winter. At this rate, I am thinking leaves will be pretty thin when bow seasons starts on Oct 16th .
