sampotter
Here is video of my newest foodplot- created specifically for this tall 8pt. I have read in the past about wiring branches to trees for licking branches to intsigate a buck to make a scrape. I used a soft maple branch here. I actually prefer to bend over 2-3 inch saplings for "living" licking branches. Have to say- works like a charm.

CNYlungbuster
cool video... question for ya tho, Did you just hang a branch or did you start the branch with some sort of scent, and what you got growing in there? It looks like it will be perfect height/age for the early archery season. CNY P.S. great looking bucks hope to see some pictures of you holding him up
sampotter
Me too. I did pee under the branch about 2 weeks before they started scraping. The scraping video was from 9/18/10. I have hung branches in the past and done nothing and had them start scraping on their own. There seems to be something about a convenient overhanging branch in a conspicuos place that makes it automatic for them.
sampotter
Planted are oats and austrian winter peas, although I have seen no sign of the peas.

sampotter
As far as branch species- I pick ones they browse normally - maple, apple, etc. I don't know that species is as important as location and height. (Travel corridor and a little below shoulder height on me @6ft tall)

Buckstopshere
Nice video Sam! What I have found to really drive them wild is cut a overhanging branch off another used scrape and just zip-tie it to your mock scrape. Bucks and does both. I had one come in the other day. I have been hanging a camera on this scrape for three years. Eight_at_scrape_9.11.10_.AVI
burmjohn
Buck, Nice video and buck. Pretty neat how they come back year after year to the same scrape?
Buckstopshere
Yeah, there is so much we do not know about scrapes and licking branches and the way that they are so much like Facebook, or this hunting blog site, but so much more complicated. Whitetails communicate through scent and I think that scrapes have different meanings. Just starting to figure it out... ;D It's neat guys are starting to use overhanging branches on a scrape...glad to see it is starting to catch on.
