Punt guns were used by market hunters in the early 20th century. The biggest we could find was a 300-pounder that could kill hundreds of ducks in one shot.

Mitcheners book "Chesapeake", told quite a bit about the market hunting down there and the use of punt guns. Great stuff. They were not uncommon among the market hunters (but the guns themselves never common) even in NY along the flyways. From what I understand, more than a few of the row boats they were seated in were sunk when the recoil took out the transom!

Had a old friend who owned several hundred acre farm along the west side of Montezuma.  Told me he remembered his relatives had a 4 bore punt gun (as I remember). Stood taller than him. Would take down several flyers way up there per shot. Was legal way back.
