Great trees, real cheap!!

Recommended Posts

I am so pumped to say the least. Just went to Walmart for fruit trees And I have been asking the manager to mark then down like phade had told me to do and the manager kept giving the run around, oh one more week, one more week. So I went to lowes and they were marked down 50%, down to 9.99 a tree and they were like 10 feet tall. I bought 6 they rang up 4.95 a tree!!! Lol I bought 3 pear and 3 goldens, 2 of the pears are almost 12 foot high. All for like $30... Going back to Walmart and see what they can do.

Walmart has several fruit trees here. Some are in bad shape. I offered 50 cents on the dollar for all the trees. The manager claims he can't touch the price until management gives him the ok. I can't understand the business practice they use. At least get 50% out of instead of nothing.

Fantail, one of my buddys did that with a couple of peach trees over last winter. He placed the tree, in the pot, next to his mulch pile and covered it with mulch. The trees survived fine.

Belo, Im going to stop out at the Henrietta Lowes on the way home today, Ill let you know what they have left.

No problem...Lowes and Home Depot will both do it as Walmart does. Only thing I noticed was that Wal-mart seems to have slightly better variety selection. Lowe's has better trees than home Depot though...and more consistent than Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart will be all over the map on selections and varieties, but sometimes they have some great options. Like this year, my Wal-Mart had Mutsu Crispin...$22 a tree normal price. Not exactly a common variety outside of apple nurseries.

Wallmart does not pay for any plant material until it passes the cash register. If you are a grower and you "sell" to Wally world you don't get paid until they do. So if there employees don't water enough or leave it inside a shipping container too long or disease or insects hit the stock they just throw it in the dumpster because the grower takes the loss instead of the store.

What do they have left?

This should work fine, this is how most nurseries carry over potted perennial stock.

no prob. I might scoop those crab apples up myself this week. They tend to hold the fruit much longer than most other regular type apple trees.

Before jumping on them, you might want to find out what variety of crabapples they are. About 10-12 years ago, my father snatched up some crabapple trees from Lowes or Walmart that were on clearance. Man he was proud, getting them for so cheap. They've been in the ground ever since and grew great, but the variety that they are, the "crabapples" only get 1/4-1/2" in diameter! At first, we fertilized to see if that would boost the size, but after some research, found out that variety only gets that big! What a waste of time and space! Maybe that's why they were left over... I've never even see a deer around those trees either!

Just a word of caution or suggestion, if you planned on planting them for deer..
