Deer hunting books

How many guys out their enjoy reading up on deer hunting books? I love passing the summer months away by reading anything on whitetails just to scratch the itch until the season comes along so to speak. Some of my better reads were from seasoned adirondack guys that just have the coolest stories on how they killed particular mature bucks in the mountains. Two of my favorite books on strategy and becoming a better woodsman are bowhunting forests and deep woods by Greg Miller and mapping trophy whitetails by Brad Herndon.

Reading those books I find that you need to pull what fits your style from them.

I agree 100% Fade!  I try to use the Bruce Lee method to hunting and books, take what you like and disregard the rest.  I kind of did that with the Benoit book on Big Bucks The Benoit Way.  I had tracked deer before and the few times I tried it I had no luck, after reading this book I kind of dismissed it as these elite guys who could do stuff I never would accomplish. 

 

Being a "Still Hunter" I always preferred ambush as my primary way of approach.  Well after watching all 5 videos I was convinced I could add this to my hunting ability.  I finally got snow and started to drive the roads only problem was I could not find a large buck track to follow after 2 days, so into the woods I went.  After finding a small buck track I could not help but to go after him for the day as he was the 1st one I found in 3 days of driving/hiking trails...  To say I was thrilled by the end of the day would be an understatement.  Jumping him 3 times and seeing his track happen upon 2 does was thrilling especially hearing him grunt in front of me sent my heart racing.  He was probably a yearling and would have gotten a pass had I caught up to him but what a thrill!!!!  Retreating at 3 pm I made it out 30 min after dark, what a day and now I am hooked on another way of hunting... 

PS: I probably made every mistake a tracker can make that day, lol...  Have to look up every once and a while... 

 

 

 

Charles Alsheimer's book A Guild To Adirondack Deer Hunting is still my Bible.  Just finished Deer & Deer Hunting the serious hunters guide by Robert Wegner, Foreword by Leonard Lee Rue the third, Afterword by Fred Bear.  I though this was one of the more interesting books as it pertains to my outlook on hunting...  Very sporting and ethical and promotes archery in a spiritual way many can appreciate.

 

One of my friends asked me " How do you always get into the deer?"  I tried to explain that while I do not get up into the woods as often as I would like, when I see the sign I can get a very good interpretation of what transpired from my knowledge gain in books...  That has given me more chances at deer, just wish I did not have so many mistakes over the years...  From fogged scopes to forgetting about trajectory at a deer 10 ft away with a gun sighted in at 50 yards to leaving the scope on 9X I have had my share of mistakes...  Get back to camp and unload the gun just to find I never loaded it... ARG!!!  Dry fire on your prey, dam hammer block...  Hit the tree stand with your bow...  Yep I have messed up with the best of them!!!  Wish my reading helped but experience has no substitute...  And don't any of you even mention that word BUCK FEVER...  LOL

Not much of a hunting guidline book, but a good read about deer behavior in general.

I prefer this kind of book over one based on hunting tactics.... and the hard cover copy has some awesome color whitetail photos to boot!

Check out Bill Vales book- the best for folks like us here in NY...nothing close

 

Herndons book is a staple. Millers stuff is okay. Eberharts are good but all the same IMO. Rothaar, Worthington and Higgins have wrote some good ones worth reading. Fidduccias are decent too.

 

 

Blood Brothers Outdoors has a couple of DVDs everyone should own/watch too.

Although I have yet to chase bucks through big woods like the ADK's, I got my hands on a Benoit book called "Big Bucks the Benoit Way" I believe, I look forward to reading it soon!

I've got that one. It's a great book.

 

Also, one of my favorite deer management books (not directly about hunting) is White-tailed Deer Ecology and Management. It's a book by the Wildlife Management Institute. Oh and then there is one of the more important hunting books: the two volume Environmental Conservation Law of New York (about due to get a new set).

 

I have several other deer hunting books that I have picked up over the years, but get a lot of my reading material from magazines such as Bowhunter, and Deer & Deer Hunting.

Agree: Off-season reading is both entertaining and educational. Suggestion: Look for good hunting books at garage sales, library book sales, and book store "bargain bins". A few years back, Outdoor Life put out a series if DEER HUNTER'S YEARBOOKS. I have several and re-read them often.
