shawnhu
Def. Want to get some rabbit hunting in.....just got to find a good place to go. Never jumped any rabbits when upstate but my backyard has a bunch but cant hunt them where im at in suffolk lol..... Suffolk allows rabbit hunting. If your neighbors give you permission within 500', you're good. You don't have to take them with a shotgun or bow in LI. I hear LI is great for rabbits, either by dog or by briar pants. jjb4900
dont want to hijack the thread but any suggestions on getting a bassett hound to sniff these out? I would suggest a beagle if your seriously considering a rabbit dog.
Berniez
Rabbits were all over the place till around Aug 17 then they seemed to have vanished. If there is anything to the amount of young I saw into August it should be a great year. The cover in Otsego county is still so thick it is virtually impossible to see them in the brush. So until we get some heavy frosts...they are pretty safe. There is nothing like a few well trained beagles running rabbits. Its a shame most beagles aren't trained to come when called. growalot
I had one under the stand the other night...if it's true as Joe said ...legal to carry anair gun while bow hunting I just may ask for one for Christmas this year...

Joe claims its legal to carry an air gun while bow hunting in the special season? growalot
I'd have to Graceland read that thread...thought that is what he said...they aren't. Concidered fire arms ...if I recall correctly?
bkln
I had one under the stand the other night...if it's true as Joe said ...legal to carry anair gun while bow hunting I just may ask for one for Christmas this year... Airgun is a legal hunting implement for the last 2 years now and therefore categorized as a firearm, so no go during the bow season... Not sure where Joe is getting that from. This is what I read and understood, unless you fellaz know otherwise...
shawnhu
DEC considers an air gun that fires in excess of 600 fps a firearm and is not allowed during special bow season when hunting with a bow. NYS does not consider an air gun as a firearm, and a felon can use one to hunt in NYS. Duck_the_Dog
Can't wait for bunnies! I love hunting deer, but my new love is anything with my Lab. Ducks, pheasants, grouse, and I learned last winter while we were out looking for grouse that he's a pretty good rabbit dog. sent from somewhere out there.... Early
I had a black lab that was dynamite on rabbits: cottontails and snowshoe hares both. Nothing quite like an all-purpose lab.
Kot2B
Went for a walk today along the swamps and the hills, not as many tracks as I had hoped. I hope that it's not a sign of too many predators hunting them. I walked and kicked some bushes for about an hour with out kicking up a single rabbit. I did see quite a few fresh deer tracks though. Maybe a future stand location for next year. Hopefully I will get some more time in this weekend. Has anyone else been out yet?
growalot
My grandfather had a blk lab like that...hunted everything and for some reason absolutely hell on woodland/field rats as well....but he also had some great beagles

Woodjr55
Went on my first rabbit hunt on Christmas Day. Arrived late to the spot and looked like some one already ran a dog or dogs thru it. We ended up getting a rabbit but had to cut the hunt early as I fell through some ice into a puddle up to my thighs
blackradio
Went out for my first rabbit hunt yesterday evening. Saw none. Saw one today and as I lifted my .22 to try to pick a spot through the brush it ran deeper into the thick and it was gone. Good times. Kot2B
Went out Christmas Eve, worked a few gullies. After 3 hours finally got into some rabbits, kicked up 3, ended up with 1. Reaction is a bit slow this early in the season. Felt good to be out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
BUCKANDAQUARTER
I should be getting out Sunday with a buddy of mine. Got to go and check out the back woods sugar house and make sure everything is still there after hunting season. I wish there were more grouse around we used to be able to get 2 or 3 and see at least 6, along with 3 or 4 rabbit.
growalot
Angel and I have kicked out a bunch...only problem is they have been in the equipment area...prefer not shooting up the brush hog...seed trailer....tractor trailer or the trailer that holds the drainage tile disc or plow...might tick off Mr B...and boy do they know were to dodge before hitting the wood line!...lol Edited December 28, 2013 by growalot
