Broadcasting Tiny Seed

Recommended Posts

I have a hell of a time setting my over-the-shoulder-bag-seeder to broadcast tiny seed, such as clover. Never fails, that I go through a 1/4 acre worth of seed within ~20 steps! How do you judge how much your broadcasting if you can't see it even being thrown out? So frustrating AND expensive!!

Should be a settings chart that came with the seeder to tell what number to set limit stop at, according to what type of seed being broadcasted. My 40 year old seeder had the chart stapled to the bottom. I copied off the old and made a new chart, and laminated. My new seeder had a laminated chart come with the seeded. We'll worth the money to invest in a nicer seeder, for the price of the seed, these days.

One of the farmers that farms the land I hunt was talking to me about this very thing. He said if all of the seed is tiny, and youre having a tough time with laying down too much seed, just get some play sand and mix the seed into it. It helps with a more even broadcast as long as you mix it good.

I use a hand held bag seeder, I set it so seeds can barely drop through, and tend to under seed on the initial pass,  But I walk for simplicity sake  N to S and then W to E on a second pass.  If I still have seed then on the 3rd pass will be N to SE.

For clover I over seed, clover can handle this, while I may spend more $$$ I find it beneficial.  For Brassicas they do not handle be over sown..

The most important part of small seeds is a perfect prepared seed bed!
