Getting Ready for My First Hunt

44-year old city guy with a gun.  A recipe for danger.

Last year I took my safety course, bought a shotgun, camo, BO, and lots of little nick-nacks.  Then, the weekend before hunting season, a work emergency forced me into the office every day for the entire season. My hunting experience amounted to 4 hours in friend's 20 acres on Thanksgiving morning.  Not much fun.

This year, my neighbor reserved some space on his 60 acres.  There's a blind and he says someone gets a buck there every year.  I'm a tad concerned because someone got a buck a few weeks ago during bow season.  But we'll see.

I'm really looking forward to this.  I need to buy some magazines.

Hey, welcome to the site and welcome to hunting! Were you able to get a DMP or two this year? Not limiting yourself to just a buck would certainly open up more opportunities. How much have you practiced with your shotgun?

Dont worry if a buck got shot out of that stand, if there are does around them bucks will come find them... Good Luck to ya, and be safe...

Bring extra socks to change into if your feet get cold, a thermos of something hot, and find out from your hunting party how long you should stay in stand before hand.. Good Luck on the hunt.

Just got back from walking my friend's land.  He's got a blind for me.  He showed me where the other guys will be off to the sides -- and they'll know where I'll be.  Looks comfy, and shielded from the wind.

Day three. I saw two does yesterday. They were about 20 yds in front of me, just looking at me as I picked up my gun. But I don't have a doe permit.

I'm convinced there are no other deer within 10 miles of me.

Stay positive.  I'm pretty sure there is a cold front coming through this evening.  The next few days might be pretty good!!!

How did your first hunt go?  I went for the first time this year as well and it looks like my luck is the same as yours.  I thought I was the only hunter from NYC.  Glad to know there are others out there.
