Zem18
Anyone ever camp in the Quaker Area of Allegeny State Park? Some friends and my family decided to pick a spot off the map and booked 5 days in July out there for this upcoming season. Just wondering what you think of the park and surrounding areas. May do a boys day on the golf course too so any suggestions on any nearby courses? ( we are not PGA pros so something cheap works) Any info is appreciated. Thanks Z
HUNT6246
I have't camped at the Quaker Area in several years. But, make sure to check out the bear caves and Thunder Rocks with the family. The park headquarters used to have a small but interesting museum. Trail #3 at the south end of the park near Science Lake is an interesting loop to hike with the family and could take a couple of hours. Trout fishing can be fair at sometimes but probably not too good in July. There should be fishing and swimming on Quaker Lake near your campground. It used to be fun to spotlight deer at night but there were a lot more deer years ago than what's there now. I haven't visited the casino near Salamanca but that may be interesting. Ellicotville to the north often has events going on too.
HUNT6246
You might check out the golf course at the Holiday Valley Ski Area in Ellicottville, I believe it's open to the public. I don't golf anymore so don't have any additional information.

Merlot
Been to park a couple times. Not my favorite. If you want a campfire, bring your own wood that has been kiln dried or purchase nearby. Swimming at Quaker and Red house lakes are nice. Prepare for crowds. By all means bring as much food as is practical, otherwise prepare for a drive for shopping in Salamanca. Bring electric fans to cool off the hot box of a cabin. Bring LOTS of ice for your coolers .Showers are available but not that great and inconvenient to get to. The place is just a hassle. Golf not cheap. Elkdale country club is good, but call ahead to see if course tee times are available. Holiday valley very pricey for golf. All in all, I'd rather have a stick in my eye than endure a week at A.S.P. If you can cancel, please do so and try to get a nice cabin at Letchworth State park. They have beautiful pools to swim in, great hiking, the sites are great. Better off getting a more expensive cabin and be comfortable...Keeps peace within the family.Good luck.
Zem18
Thanks for all the replies. I will look into the places you suggested. Forgot to mention we are tent camping. We don't need no stinking cabins. But we booked electric sites so a fan is a must. We went to Letchworth in 2012. Nice park and an overall good trip. We try to pick someplace we haven't been before so it is a new adventure for all of us.

2012_taco
We used to camp at ASP w/ the kids years ago. Gave up because it is always crowded and a lot of late night party animals. Try golf at Cardinal Hills in Randolph. Nice course not too far down I 86 towards Jamestown. Enjoy the get away!!

Zem18
Not sure where Kinzu dam is but I will ask around. I love to fish in the summer but haven't done much due to work and helping my FIL on weekends for the last month and a half. Heard Thunder Rocks was cool so we plan to check it out. My buddy made a tee time for us at I believe Elkdale CC for golf on Monday. Just looking to relax and have some fun. Thanks for all the tips on where to go. Ill post when we get back with pics
F-150
Kinzua Dam is in Warren , Pa. It had a high water mark on the dam from the flood of 1972. hurricane Agnes hit us in June of 1972 dumping mnay inches of rain in the southern tier. The dam stopped the flooding from being much worse down river. Never camped their but I wish you luck. Thre are many golf courses in the area.
Zem18
Well we made it back alive. Left Friday around noon and made it there between 3 & 3:30. Selecting a campsite blind off the internet isn't always the best case, as we quickly found out. There were 3 families and of the 3 of us, only one had a pop up. The other two of us had tents. The sites were not set up for tents as they were basically gravel driveways made for pop ups and campers and no grass. The site my family selected was huge and we ended up giving it to our friends with the pop up as the site they had next to us was barely big enough for their van, let alone their pop up. We made it work though and had a blast. It rained most of Saturday to dampen the mood so we drove around the Amish trail checking out some of the shops which was cool. Fished on Sunday. Caught a nice 17inch 3+lb largemouth. My buddy has to send me the pic and I will post it. Only fish we caught. Monday we golfed at Cardinal Hills. Nice course and good weather and didn't golf too bad for first round of the year. Shot an 89. Fished Tuesday afternoon. Caught a small largemouth and a few sunfish. Saw two of the largest Rainbow trout I have ever seen in my life in the inlet. My buddy caught a small rainbow and about 15 sunfish. We had a blast. Never got to anything else as trying to get 13 people all on board to go somewhere was like waiting for paint to dry on a humid day. It took forever. We did have two kickball games though, parents against kids. The kids slaughtered us the second night, but the parents won the first round. All in all it was a great trip and the company made it great. We would go back someday, if and when we get a camper, but not in a tent. Batteries died in the camera but did get a few shots of the lake. My buddy has more so I will post when he sends them. Thanks again everyone for all the recommendations.
Red
Sounds like you had a great time I'm glad you were able to enjoy the park. I love driving the Amish trails I've always wanted to check out the shops but have. Never stopped
