Doc
So I hop in the car and start down the driveway on my way into town, there in the middle of the lawn is fawn laying there looking around just like it was hiding from the world. No where's near any bushes or any cover at all ...... completely out in the open, and barely paying any attention to me at all. So I just pulled way over to the far side of the driveway and drove slowly past, and he didn't even twitch. When I got home, he was gone. My guess is that when I came out of the house, the doe probably left the lawn, and the fawn instinctively knew to lay down and be still. Nobody ever explained to him that part of that defense is to be hidden ..... lol. Anyway all's well that ends well, and hopefully this isn't a sign of the little deer's intelligence, or lack thereof.

Those are the deer I look for. I don't look for the smartest as they all taste the same!
turkeyfeathers
I've always wondered how much time the doe actually spends with newborn/young fawns. Had one stumble by my turkey tree a few years ago. Still wobbly and wet. Dang thing was barely taller than the mayapples. Walked to the edge of woods/field and wobbled back past me. Found where it was birthed on my way out . About 30 feet behind me. There was still fluids and plants were squashed down. I know the mother will abandon the little ones as she carries most of the scent to predators than the actual little one(s). Or so I've been told. greg54
I was driving Hartland Rd. in Niagara County early this past Saturday morning and saw not far ahead of me in the middle of the road a doe standing with a tiny fawn nursing. I had slowed right down and thought this is not the place to be feeding the little one!!! With a quick glance at me and my car, Momma jumped forward off the road and into the brush, with the little one following right behind. The fawn was no bigger than a little poodle!! I think next time Momma will wait to feed her little one when she is safely across the road!!
